The moderator is badly mistaken about the Church's view of the indigenous people of Mexico. They were certainly considered fully human by the church. Sadly, some of the secular authorities disobeyed Church teachings about the full humanity and therefore sometimes ignored the rights of the indigenous people. But the Church was their advocate, led by Our Lady of Guadalupe. If you read the unbiased history of Columbus and Cortez, you will see that their goal was to bring the light of Christ to all the inhabitants of the newly discovered lands. They believed they were dealing with fully human beings. One author to check out is John Eidsmoe, who wrote Columbus and Cortez, Conquerors for Christ. He cites many original documents proving the Church viewed the inhabitants of Mexico as fully human.m and worthy of the dangerous and difficult effort of evangelization.

Why would the Spanish missionaries come to Mexico to convert the Natives and baptize them if they didn’t consider them like humans? This makes no sense.

1951 American indigenous people had some very barbaric and pagan civil practices. Human sacrifice for one. Modern day media portrays native Americans as peaceful, victims. Some were peaceful but lots of these tribes were brutal and violent. Some of the new settlers saw them as less than and barbaric and dangerous because of the brutalities they saw not just natives against foreigners but the culture it self. The church sent missionaries to teach the faith of Jesus Christ. That is what Christianity is. The church saw the humanity in a some very inhumane societies. Some people think we stole their land. But it wasn’t rainbows and sunshine before Europeans came over and bigger picture, knowing Jesus is worth it and some might say it was divine providence that the gospel made its way to the continent.
