Natural World: Ghost Bear
In the vast wilderness of Canada's west coast lie forests that are home to North American black bears that through a quirk of genetics are born pure white and known as ghost bears. Canadian film-maker Jeff Turner and his own family spend a year following a she-bear and its cubs as they coped with the constant threat of hunger and potential predators all around.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

But not Albino. Albinism comes from lack of melanin (natural dark coloring) which makes the eyes and flesh pink and the fur is actually transparent, a deficiency therefore seen as an ailment. The white gene is totally fine, in terms of genetic health. Polar bears are naturally transparent furred with dark eyes and flesh even with healthy amounts of melanin.

Omg a Kermode Bear - the white lion/tiger of the bear world. Not albino, is a recessive trait - in other words a genetic trait that isn't commonly expressed phenotypically, runs in the family but not always worn on the sleeve. Blep Albinism, however, comes from lack of melanin (natural dark coloring) which makes the eyes and flesh pink and the fur is actually transparent, a deficiency therefore seen as an ailment. The white gene is totally fine, in terms of genetic health. Polar bears are naturally transparent furred with dark eyes and flesh even with healthy amounts of melanin.

Lol we all saw who the lucky one was. You gotta understand, in wild, size doesn’t matter as much as the aggression and the sharpness of the refluxes. "one swipe of his paw" How many times have we heard that claim? Are there any credible stories of horses or female bears with broken backs because of a bear's paw swipe?
@juliofranciscogomezstoppel1860
@juliofranciscogomezstoppel1860 3 жыл бұрын
most likely not, because horses and bears aren't just sitting there waiting to be swiped, for the same reason that most box matches don't end in a single hit, even in world titles. That doesn't change the fact that any world champion boxer could KO almost anybody in a single hit.
@Darling137
@Darling137 3 жыл бұрын
@@juliofranciscogomezstoppel1860 True, the likelihood is bear-horse interaction is low. But then again, that begs the question, why is the phrase even used? KO specialists abound in boxing. That underscores my point a bit more: there's empirical evidence of this event occurring. I've not seen any of bears breaking any creatures' backs.
@juliofranciscogomezstoppel1860
@juliofranciscogomezstoppel1860 3 жыл бұрын
@@Darling137 because boxing is an organized sport event, and getting mauled by a bear is a death event in the middle of the woods. But hey, don't take my word for it, go poke a bear, lets see what happens. Take a GoPro with you, i want to see a streaming of it.
@Darling137
@Darling137 3 жыл бұрын
@@juliofranciscogomezstoppel1860 Oh I didn't know it was an organized sport. Thanks for the fascinating info. I heard that some people have jobs called naturalists and photographers who record the behavior of certain animals, including predators right here in North America. Just amazed that no one has ever caught a deer, cow, buffalo, elk, wolf, pig, goat, or other bear having their back broken on video, much less with a single swipe. And zero is probably a lousy number to use as a basis for a frequently circulating phrase about raw power. Naw, I'll let you go first. No matter what happens, I bet you don't end up with a broken back.

@@Darling137 have you ever seen a bear in your life? A strong human could break a spine with a punch or a kick. What makes you think an apex predator that weights about 4 times a strong human couldn't do the same... effortlessly? Is your skull really that dense?
