In Kenya, we were falsely made to believe that "mother tongue" is literary the language spoken by the tribe one identifies with. This couldn't be further than the truth. I challenge you to think of "mother tongue" as the very first language you are exposed to from birth so that it becomes the mother of all other languages you will learn later in life. Using this premise for our argument, I doubt if that boy considers Kikuyu his first language. He was probably exposed to English the moment he was born, which makes English his mother tongue and explains why he can't construct a single sentence in any other language.

I was also brought up the same.I personally think, there is no one to be blamed. Funny thing I speak two other language: Kikuyu and Kamba. But I will not I identify myself as one. This changed my aspect of I do interact with people. Tribalism has never been a problem to me, because I was not given a tribe with my parents, though born in one.
