You're the man.. You are a pioneer, I'm also a DIYer, not in your level but I've heard people calling me a "wanna be" and that's from the sane people who have settled and don't want to try. Like Tesla and others who took the risk of being blown up or failing went on to change the world as we know it today. You and your friend are an inspiration for the immigrants like myself and younger generation. Thanks keep up the great job and never give up... Ironically, as people generate more of their own power, utility companies will be forced to raise their prices to maintain a profit. People who cannot generate their own electricity because of location or investment costs will lose out.

Sad but true, however, think in this way. Imagine you are part of the people that will lose out. for how long you going to be 'lose out'? forever? not in logical sense right. Somehow this shifting process will eventually force out people to be aware and take action. But most importantly they learn a bit or two on how to self sustain. That's the ultimate picture.

Great, it Limits toxic fumes. And i know from personal experience dust masks do nothing. I don't even solder small wires without a fan exhausting the fumes away. Sure, inhaling some fumes isn't going do any immediate harm, but he obviously does this often and if he's going to attempt to be safe, might as well actually be safe and get a respiratory.

Charge at home, fully charge when you wake up. People don't even fully use up the EV batteries energy by the end of the day, sitting inside and using an electric car long enough that it would run out of energy isn't healthy. I don't even go anywhere beyond 1km of my house.

As a Power engineer the issue that I see at the moment is the fact that batteries do not last for more than approximately 10 to 20 years after that they need to be replaced. you can't just replace One battery you have to replace the whole bank or the rest of the batteries get degraded dramatically. In addition solar is not a very reliable source as we know there could be cloudy days for several days or several weeks at a time. Also your geographic location has a huge impact on their performance. This would cause the batteries to not charge correctly. If you were to size your solar system for cloudy days you would end up with a massive system of solar panels. A lot of people just do not have the real estate to compensate. We need to start by addressing the elephant in the room, the panels that is. Unless these become more efficient your battery storage is not that great. In addition we need to focus on really cutting down on our demand. Yes everything is powered by lithium ion batteries however all this electronics need to be charged via AC to DC conversion.
@raddisonwatson3334
@raddisonwatson3334 5 жыл бұрын
I agree, it would be cool to see more efficient builds, with less voltage conversion, encouraging all led (maybe even no ac-dc conversion) lighting. I built my computer into my desk, the cooling works because it used gravity to pull cooler air from low and exhausts hot air out higher,. Hot air rises. The best part of the electric cars is the low maintenance compared to all over car types, that benefit trumps everything, and if we could make the energy storage as good that would be incredible If people want to make a big difference in energy then everything needs to be improved. Thermo efficient homes with quality seal and insulation, better cell storage, better solar, more people utilising hydroelectricity, hell there's a bunker in Argentina where the Nazis powered a safe house using a small (super small) waterfall.

The problem is not good or bad soldering. The problem is the mechanical strength, you operate the solder joint relatively near its melting point which weakens the connection. And you seriously dont want a battery connection becoming loose, which will couse sparks.

"It's a rogue system because a ton of people that don't want you to do this right" no, it's rogue because it doesn't take an engineer to realize that a bunch of old batteries that can catch fire or explode are just framed around combustible materials with no temperature management or fire equipment nearby it's quite an hazard.

It is at this stage no worse then any other product, so if anyone gets angry at the mining and refining that needs to get done then first look around and consider that is part of every useless item people buy and then promptly throw away.

What about the environmental damage to the earth when the batteries become un chargeable. They will get thrown into a landfill and than the world will have a bigger problem.

Less then oil and coal
@heinzkunz5975

The production of electric energy is harmful to the environment. No way around that. So called renewable energy production harms the environment in different ways then say coal gas or oil. Experience gained in the last few decades suggests that solar energy is least harmfull, since the lifecycle of cells seems to be way above the 25-30 years stated by manufacturers. When talking about batteries the answer can only be. It depends. Which kind do you mean. I'm assuming Li-Ion, which is one of the most harmful types of batteries. Production plus recycling uses a lot of power and is, when looking at the not so long lifecycle of a battery, not a very efficient use of energy. Cars that use batteries to store energy, which don't use at least 90% renewable energy to recharge and are not being driven a certain mileage every day are actually more harmfull to the environment then using a car that runs on gas. Always remember, car batteries have to be replaced at least every 5 years. Batteries in cars also pose a high security risk. As long as there are only a few percent of those on the street, risks at an accident aren't very high, but when every car uses them and there is an accident involving lots of cars and some catch fire, the situation can turn really ugly really fast. Batteries in cars is just a short term solution, one might even call it a fad. We can only hope that fuel cells become mass market ready soon.

That is NOT what I have been told and I have working in the electronics field for years making less then kids at McDonald's while I build some pretty wild "high tech" crap!! And they tell me they CAN NOT pay me more because I DO NOT have a degree in engineering BUT STILL DEMAND that I engineer all my own crap most of the time!!!

If you have an engineer's mind you have an engineer's mind, degrees are just social validation.

Not social. Quantifiable. Sure you don't need a degree to physically do these things, but to prove to the people that are hiring and employing engineers that you are capable, you definitely need a degree.

You don't need a degree to know stuff. The way i look at it im going to college to learn about engineering and not for the degree although the degree is what will get me considered for hiring in the first place. Of course if I can get a masters or higher for a good enough cost then it may be worth it due to the potential of higher pay.

I'm planning a new place to build. I have decided that it will not have a grid connection for electricity. I will in fact go solar with a storage arrays. And then use a natural gas fired generator for those days when there's not a lot of sun. Have that float the batteries.
