WP suggested $1300 a month as minimal wage. It is said that this is the amount need to survive in SG. I think they gotten the data from Avg Household Expenditure for Basic Necessities, I'm not sure about this. According to MOM calculations of hourly wage for employee that drawing monthly wage: (Monthly wage x 12) / (52 x 44) $1300 a month = $15600 a year 52 weeks a year, 44 working hours. $15600/52/44 = $6.81 With minimum wage of $1300/mth. Employers need to pay $6.81/hr to part timers. Up to people to think that is $6.81 too much for some jobs. I'm not sure why is it reasonable to have jobs that can't even pay the basic living allowance.
@965153254 жыл бұрын
Isn't $6.81 below market rate for most part time jobs?
@yxk994 жыл бұрын
@@96515325 yes . So can you imagine there are still people drawing less than this? Mostly they are in the service line. I'm not sure how much McDonald's paying their part timer. This is also why this minimal wage will not increase our cost of living because there is about 100k of them drawing less than this amount.
@965153254 жыл бұрын
@@yxk99 That is a fair point. Though I imagine there are more considerations to this issue than it seems.
@yxk994 жыл бұрын
@@96515325 definitely there is a lot to consider that we might not know. through their debate mostly I see is that it will lead to unemployment. As for why it will lead to unemployment I have no idea. If it is because business cannot pay their worker living wage, then maybe there should be some subsidies from the government if that company is worth helping. Like the progressive wage model. But if the business not worth helping and can't even pay the basic living expenses of it's workers, I feel maybe the company shouldn't even exist in long run. Of course this will mean unemployment rate will go up. Maybe like what mdm gan says, is better to have a job (that can't really support yourself) than not having one. I guess this is why wp talk about dignified job. I personally feel mw is to protect employee from being exploit by company

I believe majority of the beneficiaries for minimum wage policy are the elderly that are doing non-contract part time jobs. To be frank, companies have no incentive to offer contract positions for elderly because of the potential employee's protection and insurance. Quoting from MOM website "A part-time employee is one who is under a contract of service to work less than 35 hours a week." and "Wages and PWM bonus for part-time workers will be pro-rated." In my limited experience, part-timers usually do not sign contracts for the job (unless its an established company/MNC) and works in an informal arrangement. So I believe this is a possible loophole for companies to take advantage of elderly giving them low wages. This may be why there might be a case to argue for minimum wage. What do you all think?

Bruh his minimum wage gonna be cashing more unemployment drawing more disparity between the rich and the poor. Or maybe, more part time workers as compared to them being full time? Lmao. A bunch of smoke. Reminded me of myself smoking during the Q&A during the 5mins after every presentation in Uni.

Pls, my comments. The ruling party or the administrators duties might be blurred. 1. The President of Singapore is elected. Not afflated to any Political. I might be wrong, but her speech gives an impression she is speaking as part of PAP. 2. Years of neglicence in not fully monitoring companies hiring foreign talent. 3. The opposition is finally making inroads to check policies. 4. Give Jamus Lim a chance. At least Thaman starting to comment 5. God bless my Country Singapore. MAJULLAH SINGAPURA

Efficiency and equity on the same level are not easy without good ancient moral education collectively since birth, in which the monopoly of compassion derived from. The loving of every mother in Singapore towards their child is equity but the efficiency varied in diversified degrees. 😅

According to LKY in his book, Mr Tharman only got second upper for economics in LSE. He should feel sad that he did not fit the mold of an ideal PAP candidates -- first class honor, elite universities, success in rigorous professions (medical, corporate, law). We should still respect his work and capabilities tho.
@sundaram4 жыл бұрын
Those "ideal" pappies are of no match to Tharman.
@angelamagnus66154 жыл бұрын
@Atomic Lee There is no such thing called ideal candidate. A leader is someone who pushes forward his ideas, despite his flaws and his party's. He has to appear human to his followers, not distant. Tharman is no doubt a capable leader with a human touch and compassion for the poor.
@angelamagnus66154 жыл бұрын
@@sundaram Hard to compare Tharman with these pappies. Tharman is definitely a different kind of candidate compared to the backbench MPs. He is a natural leader, a cabinet minister with decades of experience, a potential PM and the ideal combination of intellectual-practitioner. Most of the MPs there are just to follow and execute party whip while providing some sound ideas for debate. You can't compare the foot soldiers with the general!

Your schooling is not the same as getting educated with the knowledge one get from schools. He is a PM that Singaporeans could do better with now if he took office 15 years ago. He understands Singapore n Singaporeans. A wasted opportunity. Compassionate is indeed in him but not the rest of the Ruling Party MPs. Most are there to create their own Wealth.
