Great video, Doug! A few things I think would have made it even better: 1. Show the internals of the wastegates when explaining how they function. 2. Explain flow priority and ideally show an example. 3. Show Turbosmart's wastegate position sensor, and why that data may be useful.

Hello from Japan , We use a 38 pie and smaller for up to 1.2-1.3 Bar boost ,,, 50 pie waste gate for all out racing up to 2.2-2.4 Bar boost ... Then 60 pie would be all out drag racing .... Only difference to this is twin turbo - twin waste gate and what waste gate spring you use . If you don't have a variable boost controller . Then you need the waste gate spring that sets the boost to the level you choose to achieve .

I need help. My first time setting up a turbo. I bought a used turbo kit that came with a 44 mm precision wastegate. My question is do I need to use the top port on the Westgate or can it be left as is open. The Westgate only has one banjo that screws onto the side. I believe this is used for boost control. The top port (hole) is left open and does not have anything screwed in. I don’t know if my set up was used that way. Do I need to plug the top port or Can it be left alone, as is?

Great explanation. I've been experiencing overboosting after I installed a more efficient intercooler. It's only happens in full throttle. I have a 38mm wastegate. Do you have any idea what could possibly cause overboosting after my intercooler upgrade? Any input would greatly help. Thanks

I had to stop the video shortly after starting, an oversized wastegate is not going to overboost your engine. Having a spring in your wastegate that is higher than your desired boost will over boost your engine. An oversized wastegate means your controller might have to be tuned more precise to open at the correct time/psi in order to maintain the desired boost. Having a wastegate smaller than necessary will definitely lead to boost creep and over boost situations because it cannot bypass enough exhaust gases away from the turbo.
@TheChrisey3 жыл бұрын
Finally someone said it. This bugged me throughout the video hearing that a large wastegate would cause lag.
@177SCmaro3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that since a wastegate, as far as spooling the turbo is concerned, is just a controlled exhaust leak so the issue would seem to be difficulty controlling the "leak" enough to maintain the desired turbo rpm and thus boost as with a big gate small movements equal large changes in the amount of exhaust being diverted were a smaller gate would be easier to control.

And the best place and way to mount a turbo because everyone has their own personal preference whether it be out the grille and forward facing or right at the grille and side facing or behind the engine near the firewall and how to clock the turbo for the best oil drain and so on

What are your thoughts on moving the sensor off the wastegate to reduce heat and vibration for longevity? More for a street/strip car application.
@MotionRaceworksOfficial6 жыл бұрын
To be Honest we don't see a whole lot of failures as a result of that. One of the biggest concerns there is that having the sensor away from the gate very far will change and slow down feed back for the boost controller. We do make a nice remote mount sensor if you are doing so, but we would recommend mounting it fairly close to the gate.
@TurboMalibuV62 жыл бұрын
I thought it was a big NO-NO to tee your sensor in the same line as your C02 line...to eliminate pressure pulses from your control solenoids.

@edgarsanabia68745 жыл бұрын
Run the top open and feed a hose from your compressor housing to the bottom of your waste gate for spring pressure
@austinsarver24135 жыл бұрын
You said that it is possible to over size a wastegate. Is this still true when utilizing a bottle sourced dome control?
@MotionRaceworksOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Austin Sarver it’s a little less relevant with co2 pressure, however, you still can. It can require you to run 2:1, 3:1 + pressure on the dome which most wastegates you can blow diaphragms on and run into other issues doing so

What is a suitable wastegate for 44mm turbo?
@TheChrisey3 жыл бұрын
You don't size a wastegate for a turbo, you size it based on engine volume and max RPM. Just get the biggest one you can find.
