In this video, James shows you some tips and steps for customizing the base gray F-18C from Freewing, but could also work for any foam model. Don't be afraid to customize! Links for everything below:
Base Gray F-18C: www.motionrc.c...
HobbySquawk Thread: www.hobbysquaw...
3D Printed Parts:
Sidewinders (printed at 100%) from DirtyDee: www.thingivers...
GBU-12's (Printed at 85%) from DirtyDee: www.thingivers...
Litening Lazer Targeting Pod (printed at 70%) from DirtyDee (cost $5): cults3d.com/en...
Fuel Tanks (actually Napalm Canisters) (printed at 125%) by APmech1: www.thingivers...
Pylons for under the wings (x4) (printed at 100%) by bettsmums: www.thingivers...
Center Pylon (printed at 70%) by bettsmums: www.thingivers...
Then for the wing pylons I used 2 packs of Freewing F-16 rails that we sell here: www.motionrc.c...
But you could also print these and they work. (I printed these at 70%) for the center pylon from APmech1: www.thingivers...

Again nicely done James you have certainly learned a lot! But we do appreciate how much you have posted our customization photos! I know you enjoyed my f-104 red Indian and my Vietnamese Mig-21, and of course my infamous F4!

Wow James, you did an awesome job on your F-18, very impressed with your work, take your time on the maiden and I bet it will go perfect, your flights on the F-35 looked great so the F-18 should as well. Thanks for all the info too.

i know this jet was destroyed, however next one you can do, take an L bracket of sorts that's bendable (bend to correct angle). glue it to the two tabs (prongs?). then take a second raft and mold it to the same shape, and glue the L brackets to it as well. this way its all together and just plop it on the jet when stationary. take it off when you're going to fly.

Looks pretty good James. Good work. But rafts huh? Seems like it would waste a lot of material. I usually use decently sized "brims", which are just a single layer that surround the base layer of your print. Make it big enough and there is quite a bit of surface area holding your print down. Though I should also note that I always use Magigoo on my Buildtak print bed. Which works great for adhesion and sometimes makes some materials easier to remove after also. Also of note, I pretty much only use ASA filament these days. So my experience with build plate adhesion might be a little different because of that. But for me, being in Florida, my RC parts often find their self outside, in direct sunlight or inside my hot enclosed trailer. So ASA is just better at handling those situations without deforming, etc. Mechanical load or not.

How did you determine where to mount your pylons under the wings and under body, and how large to make your drop tanks?

I’m still waiting for somebody to come up with functioning external fuel tanks for the turbine versions of these so you can slap on a couple wing tanks if you want a longer flight time lol. It usually doesn’t take long for someone to make a turbine conversion for the edf’s

How about also embedding some old school nyrod inner in the foam on an angle for the front hinges of the air brake. Trim it flush with the top of the model so you hardly see the small holes. Glue some thin wire on the ends of the air brake hinges so it slides into the nyrod inner. That will hold the front at the correct angle with the bkp1300 plastic straw at the back to look like the actuator. :)

Hint: move the spray can faster. That‘s not an airbrush. If you move it that slow as in the video, the layer of paint will get too thick.
