As someone who studied Chinese for years before starting Korean, I found I had a WAY easier time with 한자어 than I would have otherwise. The problem comes up when, for example, my husband (Korean) uses a word I don’t know, so I always ask him if he knows the 한자 for it but of course he doesn’t lol.

Yeah, haha I totally feel you on the "not knowing the 한자" part. Glad to hear they have been helpful for you, too!

Finally! A foreign speaker who pronounces '한자' correctly (/한짜/)! It's music to my ears!!

I've been noticing how Ian says it differently than I usually hear it.

I'm a bit confused about this. My textbook says that ㅂㄷㄱㅈ become voiced (b/d/g/j) when placed in between vowels or ㅁㄴㅇㄹ.
@taeminhan39195 ай бұрын
@@andrewparke1764That can’t be correct. Between vowels, sure. But frequently, especially after ㄹ, those guys become tensified (ㅉ, ㄸ, ㄲ, ㅃ) the same kind of thing also happens when one of those guys follows another that is in the 받침 position, while the leading letter in this case becomes stopped. Maybe don’t worry so much about what the textbook says and see what Korean people actually say. Also, any good dictionary will have pronunciation cues to help you figure out how to pronounce things.

정말 , 명확하게 이해하고 있군요. 한문을 어원으로 공부하면, 정말 단어가 폭발적으로 늘어날 수 있습니다. 100% 동감합니다.

Thanks for the videos. I've been learning Korean for about 10 years and Hanja is something I never really touched upon, but hanja-o is very useful! I agree you notice so many of the words and knowing the origin is helpful. I continue to study Korean now I am back in the UK, and channels like this one are really amazing. Keep it up!

Thanks for this video. I was just generally calling it all 한자, lol. I didn't know the the term 한자어. I live in country Korea where there are no classes, so I just 독학 at home. 한자 makes learning words soooo much easier, and massively more interesting, because you discover that the relationships between words/word meanings are so different to those of English. Words that I never really thought of as being related I find have relationships in Korean, and that is fascinating. I think learning words is easier with 한자 because you spend more time with the word, thinking about it and it's meaning, so your learning is more thorough, and secondly because you can then relate that word to a lot of other words. I'm enjoying your videos. :-)

I think I'll need an editor before I make a video like that. The amount of clip grabbing from 예능 that would be required is.. Not something I could make myself do hahaha

I would love to know more about how they caption 예능 프로그램! It's never what the person said. It's almost like commentary. There was only once I understood it... A woman was wholly shocked and embarrassed 😳 and they used the character for death and a bunch of ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

I'm just learning, so I may be wrong. My impression is rhat every hanzi character is a hanja character but not vice-versa. Every hanja character produces a single sound which can be expressed as a single hangul syllable.

I am trying to study hanja to kill two birds with one stone. Increase vocabulary because at a high intermediate level I figure it will be the most effective way to learn more now that I have the basics. And also to help with Japanese kanji and I am just starting to learn Japanese. I saw the symbol for people and that helped me remember the meaning and so far I have also been able to remember the Japanese word too. Who knows, maybe learning Japanese kanji will also have a reverse effect on Korean. I have been waiting awhile to start Japanese so I wouldn’t mix up the two languages :) my dream is to work in Japan since my attempts to work in Korea again have all failed. I just love East Asia. Anyway, that was long, sorry but love the videos! Now KZbin keeps recommending your videos whenever I log on :)

No, this is different. Latin and English are both alphabetical texts and can only express sounds. However, Chinese characters are pictographs, and because Chinese characters are monosyllabic, there are many homophones. Chinese can distinguish homophones by relying on tones and Chinese characters.But Korean has neither tones nor Hanja, which makes it easy to confuse Korean hanja words, which can lead to many problems. Learning Latin for a British person will only let him know the origin of words, but Koreans learning Chinese can not only know the origin of words, but also make daily life more convenient and reduce confusion.

I am interested in taking the Korean Patch Hanja course. I have taken Jeremy's Hanja Course with Motivate Korean. Will this course be similar to Jeremy's Hanja course?
@KoreanPatch2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Glad to hear you're interested. We're currently in a close beta test phase, but I expect to have updates on that in a few weeks. This course is totally different than Jeremy's (excellent) Hanja course. This course is focused on teaching actual 한자 you need to reach full literacy in Korean - Jeremy's course focuses on 한자어 - how to build your vocabulary by analyzing the connections between sino-korean words. He doesn't do much with the characters in that course.
