This must win some kind of contest... Simplest bass part to one of the greatest rock songs. The bass is so simple it's almost stupid. But I appreciate Sixx never getting in the way. He just plays what's necessary. This song is all its swanky sleazy attitude anyway, and Mick Mars! But Sixx was known to have extremely simple bass parts. I was never even remotely impressed with anything he did on bass. Duff from GNR was so much better. Motley and GNR were the two coolest hard rock acts born in the 1980s, so I compare them. I would laugh when Nikki won those cheesy fan voter contests from 1980s 'metal magazines'. He'd always win, year after year as the 'best bass player'. He never deserved that. He'd probably admit that. He deserves the 'coolest' bass player. Fine. He was a fantastic pop writer. Fair. But technically speaking, he was barely an average bassist. But he's smart enough to know technicality is bullshit. Nobody cares. A kick-ass song is all that matters. And he always wrote great shit kickers.

Mick Obrien I agree to some extent but Nikki Sixx never hid the fact that he couldn't play bass, he kept working on it. But in his head he had a vision for how to be a great rock band. Nikki had the vision, Vince had the looks, Mick had the talent and Tommy Lee is a pretty sick drummer. :D? I like Sixx AM. That's the sound I would have wanted Motley Crue to evolve to in my perfect world. Definitely a sickkkk band. I really liked this cover. I'm not sure how it got a dislike. Ha!

Upp... Yeah, I've seen those documentaries. They're all fine but generally speaking I hate most documentaries. I hate when they totally fawn over every artist. I mean, watching those VH1 documentaries... you'd think Motley or Poison or whichever dopey band they focus on... you'd think they all invented music itself, they're such love letter documentaries about how unbelievably fantastic each band is. I'm just saying most docs get to be a bit much with the idol worshiping. The only doc on Motley I liked was the one they themselves released in 1986-ish. You must know the one I'm talking about. I forget its name. But it was just a guy with a camera following the band around. THAT is a documentary, to me. When a documentary has a corny narrator... Oh, I just hate the dorky narrator telling me how cool a band is. The Crue doc they released was so cool just by filming the guys with no pretense. Vince in the back of a super stretch limo with a fucking hot tub in the back... That was as 'rock star' as it gets. It's all I remember about it, but it was so cool. I wouldn't need a narrator explaining to me how cool it is. But aside from my rant on documentaries in general, I agree with everything you're saying.

Mick Obrien Mick Obrien I hear everything you're saying for sure. I'll watch them for random facts or to brain rot, but your description of the narrators is dead on. I did felt reallllly bad when I realized I think I had not mentioned Sixx' role in how much music he has written. But as for skill the bass track for Shout at the Devil is the one that stands out the most for me. The 97 version made my neck snap the first time I heard it. He's come a long way.
