I'm going to get the 2020 model because it has a 1080p screen and stereo speakers. I truly can't believe that they think that the 2021 model will sell. It has one too many downgrades coming from the 2020 model.

The only upgrade to 2021 is the aesthetic of the lens cluster, but minus a wide angle. Moto should've just skipped a year and offered different color variants of 2020 model.

I literally just bought a Moto G Power before the 2021 model came out. Didn't even know it was coming out so soon... all the reviews for the 2020 version were 6-7 months old. A sense of panic overtook me when I realized there was a new one that just came out. Now I feel vindicated! Thanks Kevin.

Thank you, I'm returning my 2021 and getting the 2020. I'm new to Motorola, so I wasn't aware of all the options. The main reasons are physical size the (2021 is way to big for me), 64GB instead of 32GB(The 2021 hogs up 18GB of the 32GB with loaded software), Camera (the 2020 offers wide angle lens).

Google Fi is offering the 2020 version for $49. I just traded in my Pixel 3aXL and got $160 for it (I paid $199), so I put $110 in my pocket. My wife has had the Moto G Power since May 2020 and she loves it.

I'm confused on the camera comparison I don't know a lot about phone tech but 48>16 on the main camera its a lot on mbs so there's gotta be some difference right? I have both of these devices. I tend to use my 2021 model a bit more for convenient reasons. I use face unlock sometimes. Also the fingerprint sensor is much better. The prossesor is also a bit newer and faster on the 2021 model. The screen on the 2020 model is a bit brighter but for me honestly I barely notice a difference. I thought up until now they were both 1080p displays. I guess at the end of the day it comes to preference. I like the bigger display and better prossesor and better battery life on the 2021 model. Also I tend to prefer the better fingerprint sensor.

Would have been nice if they at least added NFC, with all of the downgrades they did just to name a few larger lower res screen, no stereo loud speakers, slightly lower end soc that is a bit more power hungry 9w TDP vs 5w TDP of the 2020 model and has a slower modem 390Mbps vs 600Mbps, the camera is a toss up at 48mp and no wide angle compared to 2020 model 16mp with wide angle. I'm still more than happy with my 2020 g power but it's sad this newer model isn't even a side grade let alone an upgrade from the previous model, unless I'm not seeing something that motorola is hiding in plan sight I could never recommend this one over last gen. I was planning on upgrading to the G Power 2021 this summer. When I finally decided to upgrade, I spent 5 hours comparing every phone under $300 that could work with Total Wireless (CDMA). I ended up going with the G Power 2020 because 1: it was only $130 and 2: the performance was on par or better than $250 phones. I discarded the 2021 version because of the ~720p screen. My only complaint is that my previous phone (Moto G6) had Gorilla Glass 3. The G Power 2020 has "splash resistant glass". I didn't like the sound of that, so I had to buy a screen protector. Also, as of 9/2/21 when I received my Moto G Power 2020, the first update downloaded was Android 11.

Oh I paided $ 100. Dollars for Straight Talk Motorola Moto g Power . Plus $17.dollars for the SanDisk 120 GB chip to the cellphone . I'm still waiting for 512 SanDisk Memory chip GB , I watched a lot of KZbin videos than watching Regular T. V. Dish Network since there's nothing but lying lying politics .

I was really looking forward to this year’s moto GPower. I was incredibly disappointed with the utter screen downgrade and camera. Most importantly is that it seemed like a cash grab as moto is so slow on os upgrades & security patches, but there is absolutely no excuse to not have the most current generation of Android OS! As Americans for some reason we get the inferior phones, but it’s a total slap in the face to the loyal Motorola customer. Last year it was identical to one of the moto g8 phones. I don’t see any reason to upgrade and I would pick last year’s phone. I love the moto gestures (double chop for the flashlight and flick the wrist twice for the camera amongst others) and that’s what has kept me loyal and their price point. I’m now going to be looking at the moto one 5G Ace or go in a different direction with pixel (where I’ll at least have future proofed the os and security). I really liked what they did with the power and I was excited to see what they would add on not subtract. Highly Disappointing!

Just got 21 wth 64gb stor. Miss the wide angle but i already had an adapter for that. 4k video will burn through storage and hard drive space so i dont miss that. Again on small displays of cell phones 720p is fine.and helps extend battery.

Thanks for the video. HUGE thing you missed... 2020 has stereo speakers (bottom and earpiece) and 2021 only has a mono. I didn't read up enough and bought the 2021, then returned and exchanged for the 2020 within a day. No contest between these 2 phones, 2021 is worse, across the board.

I wish you could still get the 2020 model for $179 (it was that price before Christmas). It's $219 everywhere now (Amazon, B&H, Motorola's site). Motorola's site even says they're currently out of stock. I'm looking to replace my Moto G6, and was waiting for the 2020 Power to get down to like $150. I don't think that's going to happen, so I guess I'll bite the bullet and pay the $219 before they're gone. :(

In all future reviews, you need to mention whether a phone has VoLTE in light of ATT and others discontinuing 3G. It is an issue with my Moto G5s plus.

I'm using the Motorola G8 power international model in America I say it was a better phone than the Motorola g power 2020. And definitely a better phone than the Motorola g power 2021. Price wise and performance-wise.I picked my phone up brand new off of Amazon for $119. When they were having the specials. Also on top of it the Motorola G8 power came with an 18 Watt charging capabilities. To me the only difference from the Motorola G8 power and the Motorola g power 2020 was where the flashlight was located at. And the charging capabilities.

You mentioned the upgrade to 48 megapixels for the camera on the 2021 but didn't stress it as important. I think that's a huge upgrade. I have the 2020 version and find the ultrawide angle lens to be almost useless. So there is that.

Guess motorola made this phone to be an entry level phone for prepaid cell phone service than being an actual update to a budget phone with low-end mid tier specs. Very disappointing. They better not mess up the Stylus 2021 or else Motorola will lose a good percentage of their existing customers going forward.

They didn't really mess up G Stylus (2021) - not a fan of Motorola's thinking "bigger is better" - but IMHO nor is it a worthy upgrade to the 2020 variant. Now if one doesn't own neither then the newer variant "might" be the better option. I say might because the G Stylus (2021) launches w/Android 10 which means in all likelihood it won't be any better off than previous model in that respect as they'll both end up being stuck on Android 11. So it'll be a battle of which one has the better price, or can be purchased more cheaply, and that is where the G Stylus 2020 will win out.

I'm glad that I got the 2020 version (which I got discounted at $180). And my Dad had to get a new phone Tuesday the 12th 2021. And since Amazon had same day delivery my mom got the 2020 version for around $220. So I'm glad to know that my Dad got the better phone. Also Motorola is planning on upgrading Moto G Fast and Power (2020) sometime in the 1st Quarter of 2021.

I was looking forward to the 2021 variant as a potential upgrade from my g7 power.. but I'm definitely scratching my head here. I'm wondering a few things that I guess we'll find out once people test it out more.. While the 2020 variant had amazing battery life in any case I'm wondering if moto's decision to bump the screen down was a performance decision as well as an economical one -- will the 720p screen allow for a slightly better battery life and smoother experience? It should in theory be slightly better for RAM management, and so considering that's my main gripe with my g7 power currently I'm interested to see if that's the case. Who knows, maybe a 720p screen is better for the niche? Definitely also easier for lenovo to produce at least 🙄 The 662 is also an interesting aspect. The 662 supports the HEIF format while the 665 does not so I'm wondering if that's why it was chosen for this year's model, even if it is slightly slower in some cases. Who knows. With regards to the camera, this year's main shooter should be better so we'll see how well the pictures turn out. Overall it seems like moto is definitely cost cutting and playing the market, but maybe they're also leaning a little harder into the niche for the power line, while maybe also trying to push people to get the stylus? That'd be my guess at any rate. I'm wondering if the downgrades this year for phones (Samsung, moto, OnePlus, for example) are due to COVID supply chain interruptions or something?

My friend just bought the 2020 version. There is a horrible echo I hear when HE has his speaker on. Googling for a solution, apparently it has something to do with the mic placed so close to the speaker in the Moto g power 2020.

Excellent comparison. Decided to buy two more 2020's for $129 based on this review, to replace an LGV20 and a Moto G6, and to add to my wife's 2020 which she got just after launch. It's only lost 6% battery in a year and continues to work great. They obviously have shifted the 2021 down in the market place, maybe to make room for another better spec'd model?

I have not used a phone since the death of the blackberry without an otterbox like case. So the fingerprint scanned in the power button is not the best idea for me and comments about the material being a fingerprint magnet are irrelevant. For me personally, the 2021 model is a step backwards. I currently use an unlocked G8 power in the USA. I didnt realize that it was not for the USA markets when i ordered it. But you know what? I love it. G8 Power does not support Wifi calling, a feature I do miss. So I am considering purchasing the G Power and passing this phone down to my kids for the massive battery life. Thanks for the review. I am assuming both devices do wifi calling? Its handy in low signal areas. Last 3 previous phones were Samsung Galaxy S-7, S-9, And Note 8.

Galaxy A21 was inferior to the A20. The HTC M9 was inferior to the M8. It happens. Honestly, this was a way for Motorola to strategically pick certain parts (SD662/720P) and not affect overall experience/performance while maximizing profit margins.

This was a really great comparison! I needed it, too. I had a 2020 and was thinking about returning it for a 2021, but now feel confident in canceling my trip to the UPS store. I think the only comparison you missed was that the 2021 has more megapixels and, I think, has night picture features. Other reports say that both phones will get Android 11 upgrade support.

Heh, battery life comparison on the 2 phones with the best battery life on the market? I initially charged my 2020 up to 80%. After countless software/security updates and configuration, I kind of left my phone alone for a while. After 36 hours, it was down to 45%.

@@violetsummers9072 Perhaps, but under heavy usage the 2020 battery actually lasts noticeably longer than the 2021, which is another reason I prefer it over the 2021.

Ive still got my moto G7 power the thing has never skipped a beat and has been one of the best phones ive had, its been dropped countless times, screen has never broke, battery life is still 2days and has taken some amazing photo and videos. I am looking at a upgrade new phone for filming and photos. The Moto G8 with better memory, camera set up & 4K video recording its a no brainer really. For me who does not use the phone for payments and would rather a smaller phone to fit in the pocket better, the moto G8 wins hands down. Which ever phone they will be very close to each other in terms of what they do. Just small preferences. But the 2021 model with a worst camera and screen and less memory im wondering what Motorola was thinking in 2021? the mind boggles. Still i know with which ever one of these phones they are both worth the money and are very very good phones and camera's, Motorola have been very impressive the past last 5 years .

I had the 2020 G power and the G fast. Gave the G power to my daughter, bought the G fast and currently using a BLU G90 🤷 Don't get me wrong, IAM pro Motorola and zero complaints about any of their phones, but for whatever reason I like this cheap BLU G90 phone...

dude, which battery lasts longer? these are the moto g POWER. power is literally in the name and is one of the most important aspects of these phones. how the reviewers aren't providing this information is beyond me

I guess it depends on what you use it for. For me the primary function is as a CELPHONE, how do they compare there? I rarely watch movies or play video games on my phone so I don't really care about the screen resolution or the speakers. Doesn't zoom do what the wide angle camera does without the distortion? The 2020 has a 16 MP camera and the 2021 has a 48 MP isn't that way better? I don't think I've ever used the forward facing camera EVER. Anyway if you're depending on you're phone for quality pics to keep your job or something you should probably get a real camera. This is a budget phone so I looked under the hood the 2021 has a more than slightly better processor and the 2021 can use the 15W turbo charger over the 10W the 2020 uses. For me it makes sense that the headphone jack is on top. I have no idea why but the 2021 has a barometer I'm guessing for GPS elevation??? maybe there're weather aps for it??? I think the real downgrades for the 2021 are the mobile netwok bands and wifi are slightly less but IDK what diffrence that'll make. and the move from aluminum to plastic body.

The only reason I bought the 2021 is because it only costs $85. The 2020 costs $239 on Amazon. 720p is the only dislike I have with the 2021, but for 85 bux I can learn to live without 1080p just like millions of iPhone SE users.

There are a few reasons for the camera , processor and screen downgrade. One is the 2020 model is too close in specs and performance to higher priced models in the Motorola line-up....Two ,Motorola engineers are known to use lower spect hardware that will perform comparable to higher priced components when the performance is undetectable by the average user .Thist keeps Motorola price and performance in the sweet spot that Motorola fans love.... All my iPhone and Galaxy flagship friends can't believe what I paid for my G Power

The 662 with a 720p screen is a great way to make lower spec hardware feel like it's more premium. The lower res display with same GPU as the 665 will provide higher framerates in games (Asphalt 9 in particular will run much better on 720p than 1080p) and the only downgrade from the 665 is the cellular modem, but without a 1080p display, you won't be streaming video above 720p. So this really is only noticeable in download times and app installs when not on WiFi. People act like the 662 with a 720p display is a huge step down, but the gaming performance will be noticeably better, the battery life should be better, and there will be no noticeable performance drops anywhere.
