Since I live in NYC the monsters are one of the most common bikes next to the Japanese bikes here. Every now then I would see a full flailed race ready Ducati. But the all share one thing. And it doesn’t matter what model they are. It’s that deep exhaust note. It’s a Very distinctive sound. You could hear a quarter mile away and just Know it’s a Ducati. I always loved the monsters because they are not flashy. Just very nice on the eyes and easy to ride.

Great video man. I have a 797. came from an SV. I ABSOLUTELY love it. been riding for 20 years and as I've gotten older the power output has become less important. The "character" aspect of the bike is amazing and she keeps up with anything on the tight twisty stuff...wont win a lot of drag races with other bikes but I knew that going in. zero complaints. God bless.

i am a former monster owner. i bought mine brand new back in 1997. it was only a 600cc. i am a heavy guy but that little bike carried me for 24000 miles in daily commutes. keep them clean and serviced and they just get better the more you use them. they are PROPER motorcycles that beg to be ridden hard and often. i gotta get another one after watching this ride !! great review fella. keep up the good work.

Just recently discovered your reviews, i really like your enthusiasm. But you know what i really like? Bikes tested by a big man and not the usual 5ft 8, 11 stone wet through rider. Like many real world riders out there i am also 6ft and 250lbs. Its great to see ergonomically a big guy sitting on and testing the bikes real world and giving a frank opinion. Keep it up that man :)

I have a 795 Monster 2013 year. Only dif between the 796 is the swing arm..803cc and its 85bhp. I am 5'6" and the bike fits like a glove. I agree fully that the mirrors are quite useless and God forbid if you break on of them then its impossible to adjust them. I have out after-market mirrors almost at once. The handling and breaks are probably the best ever on bike of this size and form. Just did all the service regularly, changed belts at 20k, changed tyres twice, use Metzeler and swear by them. Sprockets and chain changed at 33k.. and the bike has worked every single time spot on in any weather conditions. Lots of long distance touring with saddlebags. Bike doesn't any bad roads well. Otherwise Just love it.

My first big bike, got it in July. It was between this bike and the MT07 (FZ). In the new year I’ll get the Termignoni pipes with the remap which will open up the engine a bit more. The power is linear and like that, it doesn’t have any big surges. Give it a couple of years and I’ll graduate up to the 821.

I was thinking between new SV650/MT07 or used 797 and went with 2 years old 797+ with 16 000 km on it, never ridden a SV650 but did ride MT07 and I like my Monster waaay much than Yamaha. Rode around 2000 km in the last 2 weeks and I love it. Only thing it lacks is Termignoni or maybe Akrapovič slip on. It's a really great bike to ride and feels way lighter than Yamaha. Also the suspension is much stiffer and the seat and setting position more comfortable for my size (186 cm and 90 kg) and riding style. Best thing on Yamaha MT07 is it's engine in my opinion, but overall Monster is a much better bike (for me at least). As everyone usually suggests, ride both and decide for yourself

Great review! That's just how I felt when I test rode one after riding Triumphs for 16 years! The Termi exhaust and race map greatly increases the Monster factor and releases a few more horses. Here in UK dealer maintenance cost is similar to Triumph and the components are such better quality. I love mine and will never part with it.

I am not the biggest Ducati fan, but even I would rock a 797. It's a great all around bike. I think the only thing that holds people back from them is the price vs. other Japanese sport nakeds. You can get an FZ09 or Z900 in this price point with a little money left over, and those are both great machines as well with a bit more power under them.
@andrewtaylor9799
@andrewtaylor9799 5 жыл бұрын
The Ducati has less power but a fully capable suspension and brakes; the FZ09 and Z900 are more powerful but don't handle as well at the limit. Some prefer refined handling over raw power. Plus the Ducati is a chick magnet.

If I had a few wishes I would like adjustable front forks and a windshield..tho I have a after-market one as it helps in touring. No doubt it has been around for such a long time as it is very difficult to improve on an already great design.

I LOVE the looks of the bike. I love the front fender, the rear tail, etc. But man it needs a better engine. liquid cooled and closer to 90hp would be perfect. If your just going for looks then this is great! But if you want to the whole package look for a different bike. Maybe the monster 821 would do!! ;-)

Great review! Im the same height as you and its good to see how you fit well on it. My scrambler feels cramped down my legs and uncomfortable to use the rear brake. This or the triumph street twin?
@MotoChooch
@MotoChooch 6 жыл бұрын
That is a very difficult question. They both ride very differently. I think you'd be well served to test ride both to see what's best for you. The street twin feels smaller to me personally but I love the ride. Between the two I would take the Street, but that is a very subjective opinion.
@hermitmonk52
@hermitmonk52 5 жыл бұрын
Depends on how you're going to use it. IMO the 797 handles as well as a Street Triple. The Street Twin doesnt really handle if you ride enthusiastically and you would at least need to swap the standard seat for the bench or it will far too low for you. If you want to have fun and feel as if youre riding an actual motorbike forget the ST unless youre into replacing the suspension and crappy plastic bits. Beware though, the Street Twin doesnt reveal its deficiencies til you live with it for a while. Why dont you try a Street Triple, a better machine in every way to the Twin.
@bc67
@bc67 5 жыл бұрын
Cool to see someone else with that question; thought I was the only one given they look like completely different bikes. I've only sat on both but what jumped out at me was I felt like I was sitting on the ST as opposed to sitting "in" the Monster. I like the latter. Brakes and suspension on the Monster are superior as compared to the ST, but the ST has more torque and is liquid cooled. Is the air cooled engine of the Ducati a deal breaker? I rode an air cooled YZ80 very hard as a teen and never encountered any issues.

Good review. Thanks. It's good that you gave your height and weight. Normally people reviewing these bikes say "great bike, perfect fit for me. I'm 5' 4" !." Why do they get dwarfs to test these things?

I just bought one and have been riding for 11 years. I would not suggest it as a first bike. Strictly for the reason of how much it is and dropping a new Ducati would feel worse then death. Get a used ninja 400 or R3 ride the piss out of them for 6-12 month then get something like a Ducati monster.

I’m 6’2 265 and loved my 2017 r3. I bought it as a returning bike and introduction to sport bikes. The monsters fueling is beginner friendly it’s very smooth and linear. The only concern for new riders on the monster would be the steering lock is quite small and the front brakes are very strong for the weight of the bike. Good luck and stay safe.
