When I was taking my license, my instructor told me some gold nuggets: The rear brake is also called the "stability brake" and should be used as such when needed. (to gain some extra stability) this is especially important at slow speeds (walking speed). When braking, the front and rear brakes are used together, never on their own (except for walking speed where the rear break can be used on its own) If you need to brake a lot or hard, you are not planning ahead enough, riding this way will get you hurt. Hard breaking should only be "needed" when something unexpected occurs. Never yank the brakes, squeeze the brakes to maximize control and braking efficiency. Identify "escape paths" when you ride and try to swerve or avoid the problem rather than braking for it. Evasive maneuvers let you maintain control and also get you out of the situation faster. And the best nugget he gave me was that "Everyone is an idiot and you are invisible. It is your job to keep yourself safe."

One detail nearly everyone leaves out is DO NOT grab the clutch in a panic and immediately disengage drive to the rear wheel. When you declutch, you are now free-wheeling, and your speed increases as opposed to just letting off the throttle. in gear. When free-wheeling, even moderate braking can lock up the rear wheel, especially on wet surfaces. Using both brakes, in gear, and declutching as you get to a stop, maintains better control.

It's gotten a lot better over time, but it also makes the maintenance and repair process a much bigger pain. Also, it doesn't really do much if you actually know how to handle the brakes as maximum stopping force happens when you're just shy of locking the tires. Well at least for E-Bikes there's an ABS system made by Bosch. Here's a vid showing it in use: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXfIlJuaa7qarKM You can also get "regular" E-Bikes (no MTB) with that system, but most videos showing those are in German. I think it's great, especially when you consider that a lot of E-Bike riders tend to be a bit older and/or don't ride as much as avid cyclists (and yes I know that in recent years also younger people have started riding E-Bikes)
@SmallSpoonBrigade
@SmallSpoonBrigade 2 жыл бұрын
Letting off the rear brake is fine, so long as the motorcycle is vertical or close enough not to be thrown into a highside crash. Even with ABS, your maximum stopping force is going to be just before the ABS kicks in, so it will help a bit if you misjudge and apply a bit of extra brake, but other than that it mostly sits there doing nothing.

The rear brake keeps the bike more stable as it doesn't cause the front to dive, but as long as you apply gentle pressure on the front brake you should be fine, these days abs is fitted to bikes which stops the bike from locking up under heavy breaking, if you break in a straight line then you shouldn't lose control, ultimately don't ride fast as this gives you more time to react and don't tailgate. Ride within the speed limits and remember that your not on a race track

@@PAD32 Officially, we're supposed to start with both brakes, and continually increase front brake pressure while reducing rear brake pressure. But I find that gradually reducing rear brake pressure is simply too complicated. So in my practice stops, for hard stops I simply press the rear and let go. That's the only way I can (a) brake hard while also (b) using both brakes, while also (c) not locking the rear wheel (or perhaps it does lock, but by releasing the rear brake within 1 second, I wouldn't notice this anyway). In a true emergency stop, my strategy would be to use front brake + engine braking (no downshifting, just closing the throttle). If my foot was already above the pedal then I'll press it and release it. But if I wasn't covering the rear brake, then I won't use it (I often cover the front brake, and sometimes the rear brake too). People often think that by practice one can find out how much rear brake one can use before it locks. But I find that this doesn't really work, if you brake hard enough in the front, then the rear will lock with any amount of rear brake pressure, so if we brake hard enough, we have to fully release the rear brake (on non-ABS, obviously it's much easier on an ABS bike).

Great Video - breaking with a motorcycle isn't easy to learn and it's hard to master. It took me many thousand kms until I had the feeling that I really can control the bike - and I'm still learning every day. I often use the rear brake in tight corners / hairpins to stabilize the bike. And I'm happy that I always had bikes with ABS - I guess it saved me 2 - 3 times during my early riding career :D

Leave your rear brake ALONE in corners, trail brake with the front, learn proper trail braking, you'll apply a slight too much pressure one day with the rear and you'll be on the road before you know it, the front is better to use into and in corners as long as you know how to use it properly.

During my driving training (on a non-ABS bike!) I was tough to completely ignore the rear brake in an emergency situation. Instead focus entirely on brining the front to the maximum, just at the friction limit. That's hard enough. No one can do that for both brakes, maybe a racing driver manages this. The rear brake is the low speed brake that stabilized the bike. For the motorcycle license I needed to show full braking at 50, 70 and 90km/h - quite frightening. Now with an ABS bike this is MUCH easier and MUCH safer!

Pretty much same here. Front brake is what we are told to use most, just learn to do it progressively. We can try to learn using both in emergency situation but most likely we still end up using only one when shit happens and then it is better to use front rather than rear. Rear brake is mostly for low speed maneuvering in a parking lot or tight U-turns.

Both brakes have their place. Combined braking for all normal stops. Rear braking only when at slow speed on wet grass or gravel. Riding dirt bikes magnify all these rules and is great training for anyone that has access.

It's also super helpful in the low speed crashes that are most common as it helps smooth out the acceleration and stabilize the biek. To really learn how to stop, I took the rear brake peddle off for a month. (This was in 84 when I realized I needed to really use the front brake, which is 70ish % of braking power) It was a little unnerving at first. But at the end of the month I was totally comfortable. I used a Metzler me33 Lazer front tire which 'howled' when it was dragging slightly under high braking force. You could feel this dragging force also. It let me know I was at maximum braking force just before tire lockup. The rear brake dose help.....but the front brake is what saves your life. I rarely ride now, but I noticed I mostly don't even use the rear brake on my 740 pound bike. If you don't have anti lock brakes, you better learn how to use that front brake!

Great video, I would just add an important detail. Not only does the front brake have the best stopping force by a huge factor, it also is the most controllable. We get the best "brake feel" via our very sensitive fingertips and also the best combination of power and control from the right hand. We can also fine tune the lever position to improve this. By contrast the rear brake uses the very the relatively insensitive foot for "feel". The foot also has far more power than control while having the least braking power. One of the more interesting braking drills I have done involved riding a Honda CT110 on wet grass at slow speed (less than 10 Km/h) and deliberately locking the front brake/wheel. The idea here is that the feeling of front brake lockup was the same at any speed and we could develop a better sense of this dangerous event with no danger of injury. From personal experience I can verify that a front wheel lockup at 140 Km/h does feel exactly the same as at 5 Km/h, just a lot more terrifying.

Most if not all superbikes rear brakes won’t lock the rear wheel on a good road surface or sometimes in the wet, rear brake is ok when you need to scrub some speed off in a corner, but experience tells you how much you need, the rear brake pulls you backwards, the front pushes you, one of the reasons you tense your arms when using the front brakes. With a passenger it’s best to use 50-50 to stop the seesaw effect and avoid cracking your helmets together. You must be aware of your surroundings and road surfaces when riding, that will tell you which and how much braking you must use, on track I use a lot of trail braking but experience is paramount in that situation

Where I'm from, you have to pass a couple of these tests before being allowed to continue your lessons on the road. They taught us to use rear to start the braking, but your stopping power comes from the front. In order to pass the test, you have to use both brakes, stop quickly (of course) and locking your rear wheel is a fail. Usually the learner bike has ABS, which means that if ABS kicks in, it's also an instant fail. For front brake they always told us to imagine squeezing out a sponge. You do that gradually as well. Interestingly, braking with just 2 fingers as you're showing occasionally in this videowas considered a big no-no and an instant fail during the emergency braking test. Because you simply cannot apply full braking pressure with 2 fingers on most road bikes. Not because of the strength of your fingers, but because your 2 fingers are in the way, so the brake lever can't go all the way. You also have less control over your braking than when you're using 4 fingers. If you do fall, it's also a good way to break 2 fingers. Never understood why you wouldn't just brake with 4 fingers, which will also automatically make you roll off the throttle. Unless you're in MotoGP of course, then different rules apply.

I've locked up the rear before, slid a little, but as soon as I felt it I let off of it and stayed up. After that, I will apply the rear break gently first, then engage the front soon after. I realize now, that doing that, I am loading the front tire up, giving it lots of traction right before engaging it. Seems to be a winning method
