MotoDoc 3: MotoCamping the Colorado BDR

After riding a variety of 750/1100cc sport bikes while living in SoCA, my move to CO in 1994 completely changed my type of riding and brand of bike. KTM 350/500cc enduro bike were the perfect choice for technical off-road adventures, and my KTM 1090R is the perfect choice for fast pavement and easier off-road rides. CO offers the best off-road adventure trails imaginable. Thank you for sharing this video and proving my assertion! RTWpaul rode everywhere on a 2016 KTM 500cc 6 Days bike, so the Husky 501 was the best choice for this ride, unless you enjoy picking up heavy adventure bikes like the others were riding.

Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed the movie. The truth is the majority of our miles would probably be more comfortable on an ADV bike since we mostly did two track and dirt roads and then a bit of pavement. Plus ADV bikes have a more comfortable seat!! 🤣 😕 My bike shined in certain spots where the agility and lightness gave me an edge. If we had more technical terrain the tables might’ve turned. I’d like to finish the COBDR in the northern section we didn’t get to. Maybe one day.

Wonderfully done video. Great mixing of the subtitles, music, and scenes! Thank for letting me relive our 2022 COBDR. Hopefully you’ll get to return to ride Corkscrew and Cinnamon! Corkscrew is a blast with its bermed switchbacks. The talc powder road north of Gypsum are a hoot! Then the curvy wide dirt roads following the Colorado River!

Thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of work and took a great deal of time because it was my first moto video and covered 5 days of footage, including the day in Canyonlands. But being my first BDR and an epic trip, I wanted to give it 110%. The work paid off in speeding up the process and quality of subsequent videos as well. 👍

Great video! Traffic is non-existent on the dirt roads on those passes in the video. Everytime I've done Ophir going up, a dern jeep is coming down at the top. And not wanting to give up room or right of way. Then I end up crashing. Two different times. On Ophir pass. Scenery is beautiful along there and through Animus but it's like down town hot springs Arkansas with all the traffic. After all the passes it does get really pretty and no traffic. But, Idaho BDR? You betcha! Man that is freaking awesome. I highly recommend it. I know y'all had a blast. Especially in the dirt bike. Really enjoyed the video guys! Stay safe.

I've been to 5:08 campground. Me and my buddy stopped to have some tea on our way, decided to have a little break at a picnic table. 5 minutes in, lady rolls on golf cart and asks for day use fee, lol. I got really upset, because we weren't going to stay longer than 15-20 min. We stopped at 5:08 exactly, sat on rocks and used our portable stoves for some tea and treats. Place has some views, but be aware.

That's odd. I would imagine you could park for some minutes without a pass. We all stopped near a bench for about 15 minutes to take pics. I think one or two of us got something from the store, maybe they backed off because they got some business from us anyway.

I ran Hagerman last summer. That spot where you're going up where you say you need to focus is where I stopped and let my brain get in the way. Large ruts there last summer with a very narrow clean line right near the edge of the drop off. Then that last spot where you're heading up to the summit was all loose rocks coming down, quite scary

Thanks, Jukka! Yes there were some challenges. I was impressed with other guys on their larger ADV bikes, getting through some of that. I’m used to my dirt-oriented dual sport bike which makes such terrain easier. If I had to ride their bikes I probably wouldn’t have fared so well! Lol

Never hit an ax or hatchet with another ax or hatchet. They are not made for it. i am 60 now, when i was 14 my brothers and I were doing the same thing, splitting wood, My older brother hit off center of the hatchet and the piece of steel went into his main artery starting a blood geyser shooting 3ft into the air. We were in no where top of mountain Colorado, the rainger dfrove him to the hospital in a specially set up station wagon he had. He also raced cars whick was fortunate for my brother. Always take a wedge. they are made to be hit

A properly tempered ax is tempered on the blade end. The other end should be more mailable so you can drive wedges if needed. Unless you had a 2 sided ax.

Awesome trip! So why was Cinnamon closed? You can take engineer if it is, and then drop into lake city. Also, you can take Owl Creek Pass from north of ridgeway and bypass Montrose to get to blue mesa. The Blue mesa cutoff is one of my favorite rides coming into lake city.

Thanks for the comment, Hyrum. I think Cinnamon was closed due to snow. As for the paths taken, I was just following the guys with GPS. They probably laid out certain tracks that offered what they wanted to see or felt comfortable with. Only one in the group had ever ridden the Colorado BDR before and he did it north to south that one time.

I was only off trail briefly and quickly saw there was no suitable path to get around the obstacle. I get your point. And the "high road" we wound up taking was established 2 track.

Hi, sorry, not sure what you mean by an AT. I don't know what the other guys ran on their ADV bikes, but my Husky dual sport had Tusk DSport tires front and rear, and for the purpose of this trip they were great, DOT approved, inexpensive, good off road traction, and little wear on the pavement - you can see my comment near the end of the video about that.

Would you say that Colorado no longer maintains these high pass roads. I saw a pass in the Sangre de Cristos that I used to ride when a teenager (53 years ago). A few years ago, I watched a video that someone did on it and it was in pitiful condition. I knew I wasn't going to muscle the 600 pound Ten loaded up with gear up that horrible path. It was no longer a road.

I'm sure those high pass roads are maintained. At the very least forestry service needs them for fires, etc. We all made it through fine, the only impasse being a snow drift which we got around rather easily on established path.

Where would be a good spot to park truck in Cortez?

JJ at the Good Adventure company was kind enough to let me park my truck on his property. But that was a private arrangement, not a public offer. I paid him for the courtesy and I was the only one in my group that needed to park a vehicle so there was only one taking up his space. You can contact him if you want, but don't necessary expect a yes. From that location though, you have to ride street to the other side of town to get to the dirt. As for any other spots, perhaps closer to the beginning of the actual route, I wouldn't know. But if parking in a public area it would seem wise to park next to a police or fire station. Also talk online with others who have had to truck up there to do the route.
