Review of my 16 year old Maruti Suzuki 800 from the streets of Mumbai and beyond. The legendary 800 was made in India by public sector unit Maruti Udyog and its joint venture parnter Suzuki Japan. Maruti 800 changed the dynamics of Indian car industry and was known as the people's car in the country.

Baljeet Singh you're definitely right! A long time ago we had a Premier Padmini car which need to service everyday, as its a very old car. A garage told us that FIAT parts are very hard to obtain and also hard to repair, and they said the same thing - "Sold the FIAT and buy a Maruti, its parts are very easily findable and repairable". And finally, we sold off the FIAT in 2013 and brought a brand new Maruti 800 AC, which we still kept. We also have a Renault Kwid (2016) car which is taller and a lot bigger than a Maruti, but its driving quality is so bad, very uncomfortable!! We are just thinking to sold off the Kwid till next year, but never the Maruti!! As its a No.1 car of India, no other small car (expect the Maruti) is heavier like that, Maruti is a extremely heavy car, almost like a Tata Sumo and Bolero, no other differences expect the size and speed, these are only differences!! Thanks for reading!! 😊

My father owned a 1998 Maruti 800 for 14 years. I learnt driving on that. Damn was is so fun to drive and an unbreakable piece of machinery. The thrill of driving a maruti 800 on 100+ kmph is better than driving a sports hatchback at 160+ kmph! Great review of the legendary car that truly changed the Indian automotive industry.

Small enough to go about anywhere even remotest roads where most cars can't go. Fun to drive even at slow speeds. Definition of a Workhorse. What else as an enthusiast do you want?

Was called Suzuki Alto in the west. :-) Were very common here once. Now most of them are rusted away, due to the colder climate and salt on our roads during the winter. Engines were tough as nails, but Japanese engines usually are. Got a Daihatsu Sirion MK1 myself, from 1998, so it's turning 20 this year. Never misses a beat.
@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, these Japanese run on and on. And the tropical climate in the subcontinent give the cars longer life. You guys have been much luckier lot. The Daihatsu never came to India. We barely get good drivers cars in India because of the 100% import duty.

@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
AC is sufficient even for Mumbai summer. Say a good 2 minutes. Yes it does, it feels like an extra 10 horses/ NOS power when you switch off the AC. Mine is 5 speed model with 47bhp so the effect on pickup is much lesser than the 4 speed models of 800.

@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rajeev, Maruti 800 DX 5speed was manufactured only in the year 2000 and 2001. So I'm assuming yours is registered at a later date. Now as for the parts, your mechanic is partly right. The car had come with Made in Japan parts (SGP - Suzuki Genuine Parts) and is very difficult to source as they were imported. Maruti Genuine parts (MGP) made in India parts can be substituted for the SGP are available at the MGP stores around the country. If not available, they take your order and will be made available. So getting parts is not very difficult if you stick with the Maruti Genuine Parts and it is very affordable too.

I read this in my car manual. Resting your hand fully on a gear knob puts a pressure on the bushings under the gear knob although this wont destroy your gear box or anything but it might cause them to wear out sooner. And its always advisable to keep both of your hands on the steering wheel while driving.

hi i purchased top model of this car in dec 2005 but i have got only 4 speed manuel gear box . why
@motoind
@motoind 7 жыл бұрын
+sudhir gupta, The 5 speed gear box had a very 'limited edition' kind of a run in 2000&2001 model years only. Then Maruti realised the worth of the combination and transferred it to make an all new model, Alto. Infact the earlier 5speed models also had lot of 'Made in Japan' parts and hence even the direct replacements are lot more costlier. Stay tuned and stay subscribed!

Sir i have one doubt .. if we use bs6 fuel in this specific model of M800 5 speed will it cause any problem to life of a car or any issues related to fuel economy or engine

Absolutely not as far as I know. In fact BS VI fuel might give slight improvement in performance and fuel economy due to cleaner fuel.

I started driving at age 10 in an 800, after that I drove almost all the famous german and American cars on the planet including some exotic super cars. I got a chance to drive the 800 again last year and boy, it was exciting !! I felt it somewhat similar to an old Mini Cooper. The steering had amazing feel. After 17 years , I drove my first car again and I can say its a wonderful piece of engineering !

I liked your presentation 👍🏻 Meanwhile I am also interested and looking to buy this in Bengaluru at reasonable price like you got. How did you find ? How did you bargain? What checklist you did ?
@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Kumar. I found mine through word of mouth. Bengaluru have a loot of really good condition Maruti 800's and a good place to start the search is none other than OLX ads. Also Maruti Suzuki Truevalue is a great place to get good vehicles that are exchanged for much more modern Suzuki models. I did not bargain much as the owner was an old and he price was reasonably within my budget. As for the checklist I did a basic documentation (RC book, insurance, green tax receipts, PUC if any) and physical check of car myself. As for you I would suggest taking the car to a Maruti Dealership service centre so that they even can give a quote for the mechanical and cosmetic repairs which can even help you for negotiating the price. Also you can check the history of the vehicle. (accidental damage, flood damage etc)

Not really, as I transferred to my Mumbai place of residence. The 15 years rule is only for road tax and green tax renewal and doesn't affect anything else. This being a low displacement Petrol car also helps, if such rule comes in.

If I buy Maruti 800 of 2005 cng car then can I use it for long drive up 800 km
@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
You're right. But Maruti 800 never had a CNG variant. So most of them were fitted by 3rd parties in 800 petrol cars. As a result the wear and tear is above average. And the cars are usually run more kilometers than the petrol ones too. Add to that availability of CNG pumps around out country is also less. So please stay away from CNG cars.

Hi Johann, I am a college going student and I am planning to get this 5 speed model for myself too. The thing that I am concerned about is spares. Are they still available or do the parts require deep search? Because this car was last produced in 2002 and spares availability is what concerns me.
@motoind
@motoind 6 жыл бұрын
+Tanveer02, HI there Tanveer. Spares wouldn't be a problem as Alto has the exact same mechanicals and internals as the 5speed 800 and is hence interchangeable . But many earlier 5 speeds has Made in Japan components, which stands the test of time and that of quality. So a direct replacement even though available is very costly when compared to the Indian manufactured ones. Do keep that in mind.
