Nice twisties. Quick question: if I go into a turn, and I brake gently, the bike will naturally want to stand up, and push me out of the turn. At that point, do you simply apply some more counter steering, or do you have a different stragegy?

@@itsnotachip1209 The secret is loading up the front tire with a couple points of front brake before the tip in.... roll off the throttle..load up the front brake slightly... (exhale) as you tip in and unload the front brake (gently) when you are "comfortable with your speed and direction"... throttle up as you stand it up and lose lean angle.

Greg - Just got back from a three day solo adventure in the West North Carolina mountains. I put in 733 miles in three days and had the most amazing experience of my life on a motorcycle. I rode some of the finest twisties, mountain roads and recommended loops in the Eastern US. At first, I was extremely cautious and insecure about my abilities, as I am from Orlando where the roads are straight and flat. After about half a day riding and going through the exercises in my head, and reminding myself to be smooth, trail braking, looking for the exit on corners, and remembering that lean angle equals risk… I found that I was more than capable of enjoying these amazing roads with confidence. I watch your material religiously as well as some other KZbin trainers, I have done the champ U program, practice the Belt challenges and have read several of the books you recommend. Without a doubt, all the training, belt drills and information has made me a more skilled and confident rider capable of keeping up with veteran riders and throttle junkies alike. Your voice was in my head constantly as my coach and mentor as I rode some of these amazing places. I had an amazing time and got home safely at the end. Mission accomplished. I just want to thank you for all that you do, and for helping the riding community become more advanced more confident and safer on the roads. I hope we meet in person one day and I can look you in the eye and shake your hand. You have made a big difference in my life. Keep up the great work you’re doing, sir!

Hey Greg, I noticed in some areas the speed limit was 45 mph and you were at 95 mph. I don’t know in US, but in Canada if a cop clocks me at 50 miles above the speed limit for sure I would have my bike impounded, my drivers license revoked for at least 1 year if not more, easily around $3000 fines and need to take safety courses to get my license back. Great video and amazing skills. Thanks

I'm 64 and have been riding since I was a young teenager. My first adult bike was a Kaw '73 Z1A when I was 21. In those days you would have found me blitzin' up I-5 on my way to San Onofre (52 area) from Vista where my wife and I had an apartment. I'm the proud owner of a 2023 R1250 GS now. My "pace" will never be that brisk anymore but it's nice to see the capability of a bike like mine if I ever took it out of "Road" mode. lol. I do appreciate your ability to articulate the skills we all need to ride safely and quickly. ;) Semper Fi.

At your recommendation I took a course. In the afternoon there was a ride evaluation, where the instructor and another rider follow you and score your riding/cornering etc. Unfortunately there were no comms provided, and we were told to constantly look in the rear view and turn when the instructor started signaling left or right. This threw me for a loop, since I had to split my focus too much. I was also going close to the line if there was clearly no oncoming traffic, but when they called me on it, I couldn't clearly explain why. Now I know.. I will keep practicing and keep doing courses, since I clearly have a lot to learn, but I will also keep using my brain. The roads in this video look super fun, I hope to be able to do the same one day. (less than 1 year and less than 1500 miles ridden currently). Thanks for your great content!

Went on a long ride through the upper Hunter Valley, NSW Australia today. The roads are, in parts, terribly damaged following the very high rainfall so large potholes are a source of risk, but the use of quick fix pothole filling (they spray fine gravel and tar through a nozzle mounted on a truck) left a lot of fine gravel in parts, often in the shadows. Great training to ride in these conditions- looking ahead, shifting lines, managing speed. Great stuff.

Recently started feeling what trail braking does while still riding at my usual Casper Milktoast slower pace. Surprised at how it shortens the turn radius. As far as one handed riding, the MSF ERC (not sure if it’s the same now as 15 years ago) had us ride around a slow cone weave with one hand (and I would practice left handed since my bike had enough power to idle around) and every time I was reminded of how perishable a skill proper riding is.

Seems like the lesson for us new riders is that there is no one answer, it's relative to the situation. There are general guiding principles we follow but how you use them in every situation is determined by your skill level and the context of the situation you find yourself in. Generally how life works lol ^_^ Thanks for all the advice, super inspired to take all those advance courses now! It's the slow maneuvers that seem like the best measure of skill.

Thanks for the yet another highly informative video! Since I’m not from the US, I’m quite curious though - you’re doing around a 100 mph in some of the sections while passing signs that say 40. What would happen if police were to spot you coming out of one of the corners at that pace? I’m not trying to judge or anything, just curious of the potential consequences. For comparison, doing double the speed limit in my part of the world would costs ~550$ in fines and 6 months of license suspension. Thanks!

When it comes to riding curvy roads, you go to the brakes when you’re nervous, stay on the brakes until you’re happy/comfortable with your speed and direction, and accelerate when you can SEE the exit and take away lean angle. Biggest thing is to be VERY familiar with how your brakes work, especially the front brake. Practice emergency braking every time you ride. Learn to apply extremely minute, precise amounts of brake pressure. 1-5% brake pressure.

Great vid. I practice every weekend and this was helpful. I do the same roads a lot of the time to judge how I’m doing my turns. Some days I’m faster through the turns and sometimes I’m not as confident coming in hotter and slow myself faster knowing that when I’m in the turn I could have been going quicker. Got me a 21 MT 09 full Akra and tune. Looking to u[grade to the MT 10 for better stability when leaning it over.

Hi Greg, why would you ride close to or over the yellow line in a left turn, even though you can because there are no cars? It makes your turn tighter than necessary? I did a training with motor cops and they taught me to use the left lane in a right turn if necessary and no oncoming traffic of course. Because it makes your turn wider, you can stay more upright or go faster and look farther ahead.

if you use up every last drop of available traction to make that turn of course you don't want to brake at the same time when you learn precision control, you can start to make trades between braking and turning (proportioning), these two actions can overlap when done in moderation (component forces add up to stay under limit) and you have a good time, for corner entry, the use of brakes in this manner is called trail braking the total available traction changes every corner, road surface condition, temperature, etc, so be smart and ready for your next ride

Jesus, you must be tired of all that work when riding. The thing has torque, put it in 5 or 6 and you won't even need the brakes, nor hit the rev limiter. it's called riding on torque. And most of the time you'll be even faster then hitting the gas, braking, every corner. It sure seems faster when you twist the throttle and all that but trust me, it took me some time to realise it wasn't but it was allot of action. I learned it from a guy who did track and road riding. Imagine riding 900km's of that all day xD
