What really breaks my heart is the fact that it is implied that they started going out from middle school until university (and possibly even got engaged) and then they just... have to break up. Not because they don't love each other anymore but because they STILL love each other and they chose to use that "remaining love" to do what's best for each other. Sadly, the best option left is to separate so they don't keep hurting each other. It's been years since I first listened to this song but it still hurts. So recently I got myself the manga of JBF and what was heartbreaking is that they broke up for one reason, that is because Luka was growing bigger as a star and the mc felt as if it was a burden to keep up with the relationship. So they got separated and Luka became a bigger star than when she was with him. MC tries to move on and went out with a new girl, his fiancee I think? I do not understand Japanese that well, anyways they planned on to buy something (If i recall it's the exact chair she and the mc had), Luka had a brief flashback of Luka. If you throw it upwards to fly means you are letting a person go or "free" Lets see the part where the guy is holding one paper plane while leaning on a chair, the chair is filled with paper planes. Means "He wanted to be free" but on the other hand Luka(the girl) Is just sitting down with paper planes on the floor , it clearly means "she doesn't want to let him go yet" .. In this video the guy wanted to be free and be single but Luka can't let him cause she loves him so much, they have lots of good times together but time passes and she noticed how the guy is hurting , he even cried secretly and that's what shooked her so she decided to throw the paper plane into the sky (Free the guy). I really love all the subtle imagery that shows that their relationship has slowly died over the years. For example the balloons. You first see that there's only one balloon, but then it shows how many different colored balloons that are all around them. I think it's showing that their relationship has changed from balloon to balloon over the years, constantly looking for a new balloon after one deflates, and so on. Until he finally realized that instead of spending his entire life trying to repair faulty balloons (their relationship) its best to let it go. Theres more examples of imagery, like the paper airplanes.

I first heard this masterpiece in 2011, and it's now 2021. I used to listen to Vocaloid more back then, but naturally as I grew older I listened to other songs and styles. However, I always come back to this song because of how amazing it is. This song hurts too much. I've been in a relationship for the past 7 years and I love him so much, I don't want to be apart from him but we don't work as couple anymore. I was 13 when I discovered this. I'm Dutch and could barely read English. I was completely obsessing over this song, mainly because it came right in time for my 'teenage philosophy phase'. This videoclip made me think that there was so much meaning and spirituality behind the Japanese lyrics and English translation. My school notebooks are full of drawings of people being in love and love sickness, caused by this very song. Even though I did not understand it, I still knew that there was a sadness in this joyful beat. Now I'm 19 and almost fluent in English. I just remembered this song, looked it up and felt incredibly nostalgic. I've read the translation. It is not that deep or spiritual, its just about a relationship that turned sour. I remember listening to this song all the time when I was a kid and thinking it was just about a rejection to a confession. I always listened to it and vibed out cause it was such a good song lmao. I cant really think of it like that anymore tho...Anyway I have a long story that relates to this song. Buckle up! I got Into my first REAL relationship awhile back, it was an online relationship which isn't the best but it was still the realest one for me. We played games together 24/7, texted all day and talked. I even bought more games so we could play together more often. We would do this for weeks and it was the happiest feeling ever when I was with him. We had inside jokes and we'd play with his friends alot. He would always tell me that one day we will meet and he'd hug me and give me tons of kisses. He called me his Queen and I called him my simp lmao. He just said and did alot of sweets things. All I thought about was him when we dated, I was really in love. I think I was with him for a couple of months but I remember we started playing less together and wouldn't text all day as we used to. And I was so confused as to why I didn't feel as excited or as happy with him as I used to be. He would still send me a good morning message every morning and good night one which he never failed to do even once, I was always happy when I woke up because of this haha. But I could tell something was different as time passed but I didn't know what. Since it was my first relationship I was always nervous with my feelings because I didn't want to hurt him since I liked his so much, but he'd always tell me it was okay and not to be nervous since we were in this together. I remember one day I was feeling really nervous and I decided to text him. I remember feeling like our relationship was at a stop and our feelings weren't as strong anymore, but i didn't consciously know that. I told him that I was scared that I might have mistaken my feelings for him and that I might think of him more as a friend. But I told him I wasn't sure and I didn't know what to do. He told me it was okay and all that and the whole time I was crying and it was a very new but weird feeling for me. After that I told him nvm and sorry, I was just overwhelmed and i was pretty sure I did like him as a boyfriend. Which is true. I've had really bad anxiety ever since I was a kid and I've been to therapy for it so that might have played a role in it. But I wasn't lying I did sincerely love him. I'm pretty sure he was really hurt but he didn't really say much about it. I regret telling him very much. Things went back to normal for like 2 days before he stared acting weird. He'd ignore my messages for hours even a whole day and i had no clue why. I was mad but I didn't really waste my time dwelling on it. This went on for days and we grew more apart but still texted from time to time. From what I remember I think I woke up one day with a long message from him and I knew immediately what it was gonna be. I won't ever forget the feeling. I read the message and it pretty much said something along the lines of "we should break up, I think of you more as a friend now, I'm so sorry, let's be friends still." There was more but that's unrelated, I distinctly remember having tears fall out of my eyes right away but I like smiled and laughed ? It was such a weird feeling, I cant explain it. I remember tearing up and my heart hurting like it was weighed down. Like I knew it was gonna happen for sure but I didn't expect it to hurt so much. At first I was okay, I felt sad but I wasn't full on crying. That was Until he started ignoring me in general, he said we'd be friends and he never kept his promise. At this point, I grew depressed and felt like crying whenever. I cried to my mom for the first time ever which Is still embarrassing to think about. I was very sad and I just wanted the feeling to go away. I had this depressed feeling for a few weeks after. Now this is where this song comes into play. I was still depressed at the time it had only been like 2 days maybe? I remembered the title of the song and got even sadder cause the title was just be friends lmao. Anyways, I remember watching and reading the lyrics of the song and feeling a very different vibe from when I last listened to it. I always thought the song was about rejection but I came to see it was about a dying relationship. The lyrics were like an exact copy of my relationship and I was struck with sadness. I cried cause it was all to familiar. The reason I'm writing this is because if it weren't for this song, I wouldn't have noticed that my relationship was dying. It was already fading away and its a good thing it ended. From the time we started playing less with eachother and stopped texting not really caring if we had interaction, it was already a doomed relationship. When I texted him, it wasn't because I thought of him as a friend, it was because my feelings were fading but I still loved him dearly, just not as a much. The excitement was gone and we grew a bit angry at eachother for no reason, which was a sign of toxicity. As cliché as it sounds, this song really opened my eyes and helped me get over the breakup sooner since I knew it wasn't me that was the problem. I don't blame him for breaking up with me, I do hate him a bit haha but I don't blame him. I remember at one point in our relationship when it was dying, I was gonna ask to breakup but right after I started typing I started crying? Like I knew it was for the best but I was still very sad. In the end I obviously didn't, but if I had It probably would have been a very similar situation to the characters in the video. All in all, I had many happy memories with him and he was a very good first bf to me even if he started ignoring me after haha. I cant really think back to the memories without feeling a mixture of hurt and happiness. Sometimes its okay to let go instead of forcing a relationship to stay, both parties will be more happy in the end. It will hurt a lot, but its rewarding in the end, trust me. It's amazing what coming back to a song can do. I found Just Be Friends around 3 or 4 years ago when I was starting highschool. I listened through it, thought it was awesome and didn't pay attention to the lyrics much. I listened to this song for the first time in years, and with my short yet (I'd like to think) deep emotional experiences this song reaches an entire different level. even with 11 years old this song is so emotional and i love the character design of the video, so immersive. Even a computerized voice could get emotions

Throughout the video I can just hear the characters portrayed silently questioning themselves "...How did it all come to this point?" and many parts of the visual illustration and audio also articulate that resulting feeling of disillusionment and exasperation extremely well. Frankly, up until now I've never really realised how much relevance this song has to many of the life situations I've been through, and how relatable this song feels to me. Not because I have relationship issues as depicted in the video, but just the dreaded idea in general that inevitable changes, that might not necessarily be for the better, will come at times in the face of your helplessness.
