I bought a 2016 RX 450h 3 yrs ago. I am single with no children. I wanted an F-Sport, because I really like its grille and the Rioja Red interior. I opted for a non-Fsport model after test driving both versions. The non-Fsport has a smoother, "floating" ride quality, while the F-Sport's ride is noticeable harsher and stiffer. As much as I adored the nicer grille and red interior, a smooth ride is much more important to me.

People at my local Lexus dealership told me that Li-Ion batteries are denser in energy, but due to the way that it stores and discharges, creates more heat, which requires further designs to cool. NiMH, although lower in energy density, does not have this heat issue. So in the end, Li-Ion + heat management takes up roughly the same space as NiMH without. Plus, this vehicle's electric drive system was designed to improve fuel economy (never charging to full, and never discharging near empty, as well as recharging when gas motor is running and coasting). So the choice for NiMH serves it's design as intended. Made sense to me
@Morris1962
@Morris1962 8 жыл бұрын
If I recall the NiMH batteries can go through several times the number of cycles that Lithium Ion can. The cycles being a battery going from full to empty and back again. I once saw this being as much as 5-6 times the number of cycles. The trade off being that the NiMH are heavier and less power dense. The major appeals of Toyota/Lexus products is their long life, reliability, and resale value. So it makes sense that this would be direction Toyota chose to go. A good decision in my mind.

Li-ion tends to react violently in hot temps (can explode). They heat up faster too. Check out battery problem of the new Boeing 777.

To answer the question towards the end of the video: 450h F-Sport 27 years old No kids Los Angeles I currently drive a 2013 Honda Accord Sport as my daily commuter, my weekend getaway is a 2010 Lexus LS460. That being said. I drive around 17.5k annually on my Honda and would be nice to look into a hybrid. Was looking at the NX but little too small for me. I just saw the RX and love the new design. To my surprise Lexus is now offering a hybrid f-sport too?!?! I had to take a look at this video and I'm sold! Why? Aggressive style, over over aggressive style that I love. Plus a hybrid, is what I'm looking for! I personally think the Hybrid F-Sport will really only target the "younger" demographic. As I can see it being sold here in Los Angeles. The 350 F-Sport will do well too, but that extra power + mileage + HOV privilege has my business. By the way... Thank you Motorman, great videos and I'm now a new fan of yours!

Thanks for another interesting and informative video. I really like how you give detailed looks at the driving dynamics of your reviewed vehicles, something lacking in many otherwise good KZbin reviewers. IF I were to buy an F-sport, I would go w/ the gas version. The reason to get the F-sport would be to try to gain a measure of fun in the driving while owning a vehicle with quite a bit of utility. Also, I like the safety that the mass and higher seating position of an SUV gives you in a world filled with tall, massive pick-ups, SUV's etc. However, I am not so sure that the RX350 is my cup of tea, as nice as it is. I would rather pay less and get a low mileage 2-3 yr old BMW X5 50i if I go the SUV route. Or, for less utility but more tossability, that Chevy SS manual looks really good! It's a great time to be a car enthusiast!!

First thing first. Excellent review on both models and impressive research skills as well. I live in NYC i'm 18 years old and i always liked SUV's since I was in elementary school. NYC is known for its snowy days. Cars are always being trapped in deep snow whereas SUV's plow through with ease. My family contains 5 people and we currently own the 2009 RX 350. Why would we be looking for the 2016 RX 350 F Sport? I still can't decide on which model we should be looking into. Both the Hybrid and F sport look good, but also perform similarly. Any tips?

I was looking for a big SUV so I went to see BMW X5, Audi Q5, Volvo XC90, Jag F Pace, but end up with the Lexus RX Fsport 450h. You have to look this in real life and trust me this looks very nice its modern and bold design especially in white with red leather. The CVT I was not too sure at first but you will never know you driving a CVT 95% of the time its very quite only when you have to put your foot down which is very rear. Just £100 for a yearly Road Tax and 45 miles to a gallon which is impressive.

I just ordered an fsport hybrid in the uk. I tow a trailer, enjoy silent luxury, but enjoy the occasional 'unofficial time trial'. The fsport is 8k cheaper than the premier, but only loses the adaptive headlights and camera system. It gains better interior and exterior as well as slightly more rigid sport mode handling. The HUD and Levinson stereo are options for fsports, which I have added. Really, the choice was based on styling, as the performance is identical in either. Roll on delivery. Ps I have a 2011 RX450h premier, so am not new to Lexus.

The styling is definitely very bold! I'm not sure if I like it or not yet, it's one of those things that's still "too new" and I'd have to see a few on the road to make up my mind. In particular, I can't make my mind up on that black/glass (which is it?) section of the D-pillar, which is obviously cribbed from the BMW (via the i3 concept + Vision EfficientDynamics concept) where the greenhouse is meant to look as if it's suspended in the superstructure of the chassis. From certain angles, this looks like a total afterthought, but the intended effect does come through in profile and it looks cool there. The grille is really wild and concepty but, again, this is probably what the future looks like and something my eyes just need time to adjust to. It certainly adds to the "anime robot" vibe, and that's something I can get down with (vaguely reminiscent of some of the more out-there Japanese styles from the '70s, which I'm a big fan of). Love the interior, and that's really what cars like this are all about. I'm not the kind of person who would buy an RX, but if I had like way, way more money than I do now and just wanted something to run errands with, I actually could see myself trying one. I live in New York and this is an excellent type of vehicle for the daily grind of sitting in traffic. You mention the GLE550e as an example of a more seamless hybrid design, and I agree with that, although in an urban environment I actually think the Toyota/Ford power-split model is preferable. It's sooo smooth and sooo quiet and by nature everything is always connected. There aren't clutches disconnecting different parts of the drivetrain; in fact it feels more or less like an EV unless you've really got your foot in it. And that's the tradeoff as well - out on the open road or in spirited driving, a hybrid with actual stepped gear ratios is preferable. I'd go for the F-Sport just based on it looking cooler, but everything else that it adds is a plus as well. Another great review... glad I found this channel!

I do have a family, I live in a large-ish European city, i'd use the RX as an everyday runner AND as a highway express at least once a month (+-1000km) and I would DEFINITELY go for the F-Sport. Why? Not the "sporty feeling", not the F-Sport badge, not the equipment that only comes with an F-Sport trim, but because I currently own and use the latest Auris Sport (ehm) Tourer Hybrid and I will take ANYTHING that mitigates the sheer awfulness of the CVT "transmission".

I have a 2013 RX450h Premier here in the UK (not sure it's a spec in the rest of the world - basically everything but the rear seat entertainment) - I love it but it tries to kill me on a daily basis with its understeer. I pick up the 2016 RX 450h premier on the 1st of March - it's better in every aspect (I test drove it) - still tried to kill me on a couple of bends but hey it's a Lexus! I buy Lexus because they collect my car and bring it back clean and fresh; they provide a high spec courtesy car and never have an issue with when I need it. Lexus in Sheffield in the UK are fantastic and I can't speak highly enough of them - service is everything. I've had Mercedes, Volvo, Landrover in the past and they all walk away once the car is bought, although I still have a soft spot for Volvo! Mercedes are rubbish nowadays, and I wont even test drive a BMW due to the disappointment on our fleet - tinny nasty things

What I find stupid is the hybrid "requires" premium gas while the 13+ rx350 takes regular..but atleast until 2015 the RX hybrid uses the exact same powertrain as the Highlander hybrid which doesn't require premium even though it makes the same HP and has the same compression ratio (idk if this changed for 16)

Lexus' basic models are a bit soft thus they target those looking for a luxurious and comfy vehicle. The F-Sport are for those who wants a little more handling out of their vehicle but at the same time for those who wants comfort out of their vehicle. The F-sport models contend with the basic BMW/ Jag models by offering a bit more of handling but when u compete it with the sports model from these companies, it will be softer. Lexus may always want to change its brand image and lower its customers' age profiles but it will do so with comfort in mind.

Why would I get the F-Sport? Well, firstly I think it looks awesome, the edges and the sharpness of the design is unique and looks powerful. I am in the UK with 3 kids, the 450h F-Sport is cheaper on tax and fuel as well as holding value better than the petrol only RX200T we get. F-Sport suspension is great IMO, doesn't give a boaty ride, yet doesn't break your spine with an overly hard ride, its just better balanced! It handles better than the regular RX, which isn't as confident compared to the F-Sport on twisty roads and motorways when you have to make a sharp maneuver

8:52 why do you need a aftermarket NAV in that car !??? i drive the 2010 model with airsuspension and i love it. i dont need or see sense in trimming a 2,2ton SUV to a sporty car ! So for me LExus stands for luxurious, quiet, reliable, safe cars with the best Hybrid system you can get ! ANd my old NiMH battery is over 10 years without a bad cell ! Toyota is conservative in that and in the long term they made the right decision , imho. When i have to buy a new RX i definately would bus the Hybrid again but no F-Sport. sadly they do not offer the airsuspension anymore because i like it when it lowers down the car when on autobahn . the cw factor of the RX450 was best in class at its time 2009/10 !!

My sister has the outgoing model with active rollbars, it is quite more agile than the standard 450h. This is one of the best looking SUVs in my opinion and the F-Sport makes more sense if you're under 50 and go surfing, banging the girlfriend in the back and such or as a second/third car for spirited drivers like myself. Classic trim looks great in candy red or gloss black too as long as you skip the obnoxious fake vortex rims.

Hybrid because of all the driving I do for work. The F sport for aesthetics and suspension stiffening. Not to mention, for those people that will say "Really dude, a hybrid"? So, I think you asked the right person because I am still debating between the RX 450h Luxury and RX 450h F SPORT. Full disclosure, this car is for my parents. However, I've been put in charge of sorting it out. My brother and dad want the F SPORT for the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS). My mom and I want the Luxury for the grille design, wood trim, color choice and very comfortable seats. So, it looks like I'm going to have to test drive both. Why would I choose the F SPORT? Well, I don't think I would. The only interesting thing the F SPORT has is AVS. Now, what region of the world am I in? Ohio, US of A. So yes, I will be getting the AWD with the third electric motor in the rear. I think that's a neat and innovative way to integrate AWD. Do I have a family? Sure, my mom, dad, brother, grandmother and myself. So the third row is just added weight and a waste. What are we using the car for? My dad does a lot of communing. All of our cars have over 110,000 with his 2007 Infiniti M at 175,000. So we are overdue for a new car. If we have larger items, we end up having to take our 1999 Land Cruiser which is amazing, but a bit of a pain to drive around town and sucks a lot of gas! We where considering the NX a while back, but the lack of Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Highbeam and the chopped spindle grille sent that idea out the door. So, 2016 Lexus RX 450h Luxury Package, Lexus Safety System+, all the tech., in Autumn Shimmer with Parchment and either bamboo or laser cut wood trim is what I am looking for. Um...sorry for the novel, but hey, you asked the question!

Man, that engine bay is like a horror show, Plastics... plastics everywhere (insert Buzz Lightyear meme here) The F Sport should make it more fun\pleasant to drive for guys like us, for others it could be because they like the way it looks (Beauty Is In The Eye Of Beholder) & for some who wants to brag & show off that they got the most expensive model. But for me, I'd get me an SRX (Not particularly fond of the new XT5) or Durango R\T instead (or the upcoming SRT)... i know, different segment... but its the only crossover\suv i like that doesn't have an +80k price tag As always, excellent episode M!

I like the F Sport because of the styling (grille) similar to the IS F Sport, but I'm torn because I'd also want the styling WITH fuel sipping tech... is there such a thing as F Sport Hybrid? I hate refueling. I live in FL, no kids and I'd use the vehicle to commute from point A-B, because who cares about a gazillion hp when driving in city traffic?? As long as it's comfortable, has a unique appearance, and low maintenance/reliable I'd be happy. That said, I drive the 2014 Corolla bc money doesn't grow on trees, but I also like the non-conforming look of the grille. I would lease an RX... for the right price of course.

But I'm hoping the EXHAUST and ENGINE noise are not as noisy as the regular RX 350. I would also stay away from the F-sport like it was THE PLAGUE. I am looking for 100% COMFORT, SOFT, PILLOWY RIDE, and EXTREME LEVELS of noise isolation. Only an idiot would want their everyday driver that one drives for long periods of time to be any other way **rollseyes** I'm not sure what is wrong with Lexus these days, and why their V6 engines are so UNREFINED, with a DRONING EXHAUST / ENGINE NOISE.

F sport version provides the opportunity to be a badass on the road. men at a certain age still would like to step on the gas pedal at some point :) eco mode is for day-to-day commute, especially in socal, where slowpokes drive. exterior looks ok, except for the sides. omg, get rid of the plastic wheel guards, and close the gaps between the body and wheels!! why is it that the Ford SUVs can do it for their consumers but that Lexus can't?? my current car is the RX330 from 2006. i customized it with a new set of 20" wheels the same day i drove it out of the dealership. even so, the gaps between the edge of the tires and the body frame are huge. ugliness. the problem is the shock system. Lexus wants to make the drive so smooth that they forget about the looks. as a result the wheel base has to stay high, regardless of the size of wheels...unless owner changes the shock system. interior looks kinda small. the driver side cup holder is gone right? nevertheless, i am planning to get the hybrid f sport version. it's been a while. didn't like its previous generation so i waited this long. a pearl white with red interior trim will be my choice :)

+Wooda : Hi Wooda, I actually agree with much of what you say. But honestly I quiet like Mercedes's current design language, I love the Bold Look of the S class, and find the S Coupe to be quiet beautiful. Sure there are many other cars in their garage, but that discussion would take a while, to fully explore their design philosophy, on all their various models. BMW, I again have a few favourites. The 4 Series is very attractive, and distinctive, add the M Divisions enhancements, well beautiful is my opinion. The 6 series is also a very nice design, particularly the Grand Coupe! This car is really stunningly beautiful, again it's looks are enhanced by the M Divisions Magic. BMW "M," Adds a certain something to any BMW, it gets it's spanners on. But Audi, I really have issues with their exterior styling. Audi build some of the finest Automotive Interiors in the Business. Then they let them selves down with very plain Exterior Styling. Audi's Exterior Style, seems to be stuck in the Mid 2000's. The last great Automotive Designs of theirs, were the R8 and the TT. The TT is in it's third Generation, the R8 is coming into it's second...But only because Audi extended the Product Cycle, to get maximum financial benefit from R8 series One! But my favourite German Automotive Manufacturer is Porsche. Here is a company, that has it's design language dictated by it's Incredible Heritage, and demanding clientele. Yet it still produces current designs, with up to the minute styling and technology, which is blended beautifully and seamlessly within it's classic details. The 911 (991.2) is still as gorgeous as the first time I layed eyes on her. The Panamera, again a very recent addition to their fleet, yet bows her head to Porsche's Heritage, though the Zuffenhausen Styling Centre. The Cayman and Boxster, the Cayenne and the Macan, all beautifully Authentic Designs, yet paying Homage to Porsches Rich Historic Past. This may strike you as strange, but I have owned a few BMW's and in my life, and a couple of Benz's in the past decade. But I have never owned a Porsche!! The reason being, initially I couldn't afford the price of entry! Now that I can, I find I cannot get my Ass out of the cockpit without a Crane. I'm an old codger, and have severe Arthritis, so the S class is my best option now. Plus I badly need the (Superb) Heated Seats. The Massage Function is a gift from God....Believe me. Now for my opinion of Lexus. In fact I really Admire Lexus as a brand, they are about 25 years old, and are powering ahead in a cut throat industry. Of course Toyota is behind their every step, but still, to be doing as well as Lexus is in the American Market..Is no small feat. My favourite currently available Lexus vehicles are the RC F, and the GS F. If Lexus made an LS F, I would be seriously consider their big Sedan. Sure Lexus is very conservative with the LS Sedan, but then so is Daimler, BMW and Audi with their top shelf Offerings. My understanding of this is, Market Research Has Indicated, that by the time a person can afford one of these machines, they are Middle Aged, and quiet conservative themselves.... Now my issue with the RX and the LX All Wheel / Four Wheel Drives Are: The RX appears to me to be a Mish Mash of Lines, Angles and Odd shapes, etc. With a Black D Pillar, for no apparent reason. The car just doesn't look right to me. My real question is, Why do all Alternative Fuel Automobile Manufacturers, apart from Tesla, try so hard to make Actual Owners or Potential Customers, stand out Like a Sore Thumb? Most people do not want to stand out like that. Now if it was a Ferrari, that would be a different story, as Ferrari's are so well........Awesome. My cousin was looking at getting a Toyota Prius, but when actually confronted with the car, she bought a Toyota RAV 4, as she said the Prius looked weird. This is a women, who has no interest in cars, or car style. She had until then, owned 4 Camry's over the past 20 years. The LX, well that car looks like a Friday Night Special. If you didn't know better, one could assume, that Lexus Wheeled the LX 570 into the workshop, cut the nose off, attached a Spindle Grill....Then on Monday, wheeled it out, and then started selling the New LX 570. Yes that is a horrendous laughable joke, but honestly that vehicle is Pig Ugly. Again it has, like all Lexus Vehicles, a Fantastically Beautiful Interior...But honestly, if I was in the Market for a 4 Wheel Drive, Go Anywhere Luxurious all Terrain Vehicle...I would consider the Toyota Land cruiser or Range Rover Vogue......First!!! So if Tesla can sell beautifully designed alternate Energy Transport Solutions, why can't Toyota, Honda and Lexus??? And to a lessor degree, Mercedes Benz and BMW, as the i3 is quiet confronting. Though the i8 is very appealing. Attractive cars cost slightly more, for fancy trim, nice alloy wheels etc. I would be prepared to pay more, to get a nice looking Electric or Hydrogen powered car. As for alternative well designed cars, well Alfa Romeo's Giulia and the 4C are sensational looking cars. Practicality, I have no idea, but would say the 4C wouldn't be practical at all. Volvo's new XC90 and S90 look quiet good, though the S90's rear lights are...well not pretty. Cadillac's ATS V and CTS V, and their generic siblings are nice looking to my taste. But like all things, Automotive Design, and Attractiveness is very Subjective and quiet an Individual Experience. One Persons Beauty, is another's Beast. I find Rolls Royces "Dawn" Beautiful, and the Phantom (Series 2) Handsome, the Ghost (Series 2) is again nice looking. Jaguars XJ, XF, XE and F Type are really attractive, with the big advantage of not looking like Half the Cars you Pass each day...Which is another bonus for the Rolls Royce Brand. Honda's New Civic looks quiet nice, but I will reserve my judgement until I see one in the flesh..So to speak. Nissans Maxima is not overly good looking, whilst the Altima appears not bad. As I said before, Automotive Style and Beauty are very subjective. Sorry for the rant, but I wanted to try to answer your question, and not serve you up some half baked Bulls#it. But remember, I am quiet possibly much older than you, and as human beings age, we become much more conservative. Sincerely, Ps..Sorry for any grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, I haven't slept for going on 48 hours now, and am really starting to feel the effects.

Lithium batteries are prone to fire. Even if manufacturing is provided to be safe and there is always a human factor that down the road when it gets old, some folks will start to jiggle on there own and cause them to explode. But manufacturer is not responsible for expired warranty things but finger pointing will bite back. So, better be safe.

In answer to your question on the batteries. Toyota are very bright. In Europe you've got no chance now, environmentally, with NiMh. However, the technology has moved on, so that NiMh can match NiCd in terms of discharge times. NiCd was always 'longer'. Not now. Also NiCd is not as efficient in terms of high load eg: 'starting engine' procedures. Moreover, the NiCd is not as 'efficient' in terms of charging up....unless safety factors are built in that stop charging on full charge. I forgot, the Atkinson Cycle also works best at higher revs, lower torque What was the transmission? Toyota must have weighed up lots of factors over there, in the US market. Ta. Tony

when a CVT is not a CVT.......a CVT is entirely different from a hybrid eCVT. Not even remotey similar. One uses no gears, one uses entirely gears, planetary gears.....one inherantly suffers from a need for gear speend to catch u with engine speed, the other doesnt have that inherent problem

Periscope! vertical video would make this vehicle look better just as wearing blinders. It looks best blindfolded. You'll get more views if you stay away from reviewing ugly cars. Why doesn't this car have a Lithium battery? I'm guessing because Toyota uses NiMH is their hybrids and has had exceptional luck with them configured in relatively small packs with short range. This thing doesn't have a 50 mile electric range. You can take a NiMH battery from 0% State of Charge to 100% SOC without killing it. You can't do that with Lithium cells. Besides, Lithium is more expense and requires more thermal management. Check the differences at batteryuniversity DOT com. I read years ago that Toyota engineer Dave Hermance reported zero degradation in NiMH Prius battery packs after 150K miles. NiMH seems to be the right battery for these applications. Give me a stick to gouge my eyes out. I watched the video and turned into stone.
