The three factors that determine the type of work a motor can produce are speed, torque, and horsepower. Speed is defined as how fast the motor performs its work. For example, a shaft can rotate slowly or quickly. The typical units of measurement for rotational motor speed are Revolutions Per Minute, or rpm.

In physics and mechanics, torque is the rotational equivalent of linear force. It is also referred to as the moment, moment of force, rotational force or turning effect, depending on the field of study. The concept originated with the studies by Archimedes of the usage of levers. Wikipedia

@smaari

There is a mix-up between Power and Energy in this video. Power is defined as the Energy generated or spent over a period of time. Assume you generated 500 Joules over 5 seconds then the average Power generation over these 5 seconds is 500/5=100 Watts. In IS units, the Power unit is Watt=Joule/Sec. In Imperial Units, the Power unit is BTU/hr. Here are few ENERGY conversions (Think of energy as: Joules, BTU, and Kwh i.e. Kilowatt-hour): 1 Joule=0.000947817 BTU=2.7778e-7 Kwh 1 BTU= 1055.06 Joule=0.000293071 Kwh 1 Kwh= =3.6e+6 Joule = 3412.14 BTU ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are few POWER conversions (think of Power as: Watts, Mechanical Horsepower hp(i), 1 Watt=3.412141 BTU/Hr=0.0013410 hp(i) 1 BTU/Hr= 0.2931 Watt=0.000393 hp(i) 1 hp(i)= 745.67 Watt = 2544.433 BTU/hr

Jorge Godinez Guys... It can all be calculated, it's just deciding between which word to apply to any given situation. Hp is great for mechanical work like cars or cranes but has 0 impact on deciding chemical needs. Joules of energy (i.e. potential energy) is much different than live horsepower.
@navidzadeh9713

@nicholaslau3194
@nicholaslau3194 6 жыл бұрын
Jay Edlington Hp and joule are fundamentally different things. It is not a matter of which application is more convenient. You can certainly use horsepower in chemical applications, but you will need a time dimension using hp, (i.e. total energy released or taken / duration of the reaction), In this case power can be useful if you want the rate of reaction, but it will not be useful if you do not care about how fast the reaction needs to be done.

@qualquan
@qualquan 8 жыл бұрын
Author is playing fast and loose with terminology. Torque is NOT work nor HP. Torque is rotational FORCE. Work is Force multiplied by distance in direction of force and actually is TRANSFER of energy from one body to another. Power including horsepower is RATE of work or Work/time or F.d/t or Force x velocity. When using Torque as Force then Power or HP =Torque x RPM/5252

Torque and work have the same SI unit, no? Also, torque is a product of force AND the distance between the force and the fulcrum. In a sense, torque IS work done on a rotating body. Else, correct me since I‘m a newbie
@timvj9808
@timvj9808 5 жыл бұрын
@@heavycurrent7462 No it's correct. People are just arguing nomenclature, both torque and work are a product of force and distance. Hence they are essentially the same, however people prefer to look at the differently
@minhcly95
@minhcly95 5 жыл бұрын
@@heavycurrent7462 Torque is the rotational force. Work is the difference in kinetic energy. They have the same unit but are different in principle. In work, distance and force are in the same direction. In torque, they are perpendicular. Work = Torque * ANGLE in radian. Power = Work / time = Torque * (angle / time) = Torque * rotational speed (in radian/s).
@heavycurrent7462
@heavycurrent7462 5 жыл бұрын
@@minhcly95 I‘ve asked a friend of mine who teaches physics in a university. He said there is no such thing as rotational force, except if it is also measured in Newton. "Torque is not a force in any way, but can be looked at as the work done to rotate a body about an axis." He also said the distance and force to measure torque are actually of the same direction, except that the direction is circular rather than straight (circumference). But we calculate the radius instead since in gearing, circumference and radius are directly proportional and the latter is easier to measure.
