Here we go again, another great episode. I’m a sailor at heart and former professional but I enjoy peeking into the life on the other side. It’s easy to watch. You two, and first mate Jasper of course, are more professional boat people than many of the professionals out there.

Thanks Cathryn - you are too kind. And it's OK to spend a little time on "the dark side." We have a lot of fun as you can tell, but we take the boating piece of things very seriously. Especially Jasper 😎

In the California Delta the Hilton Family puts on a great fire works show for Independence Day. Boats start to show up a week in advance, 4000 to 7000 boats anchored and rafted. Absolute chaos, we opt to anchor one slough over with a mere 10 to 15 boats. Wow that’s a great view and lots of fun.

I can certainly see why it's best (and legal) to leave the drinks to the dock. You need to be on your game, as there's just too much going on when underway on the water. Heck, they taste better when you are stopped with no worries anyway. Cheers!

Thanks Scimi! As the boats in our life got bigger, the day trips that made up all of our previous boating life seemed to get fewer and further between. No complaints, of course, but it's nice to revisit that once and a while. Cheers!

The Ocean Alexander is such a beauty. 😍 But I would prefer classical shaft drives. Yeah it's always a problem to lay in a package with bigger yachts. Even if it's dead calm, the swell of other boats can cause damage. I could not sleep then. Jasper is awesome 🤣🐶
@OLOH
@OLOH 3 жыл бұрын
It is a beautiful boat for sure. Captain John also later realized that he had disengaged his stabilizers which would have mitigated the rocking a bit once we were rafted but we wouldn't have wanted to rely on that to keep us from knocking in any event. Lesson learned and we hardly suffered as the day went on 😎 And Jasper thanks you!

We gave a 94 Ocean Alexander 486 Classico name is Honalee. Will be heading down to the Keys in December from Bradenton/Palmetto. Question... thought I read that you have to anchor in 40’ on sand or pickup a bouy in the Keys? Just found your site and videos, am enjoying all that you share, learning a lot!
@OLOH
@OLOH 2 жыл бұрын
Beautiful boat and great name! So glad you found us and thanks for the kind words. We have never heard of those kinds of general anchoring restrictions in the Keys - perhaps that is specific to a certain area like a national park. We are always careful to anchor in sand so to avoid damaging sea grass. Please feel free to reach out anytime - email is best at ahoy@myoloh.com. We hope to see you out there!

Appears Jasper was a little jealous of all the water action!! Did he finally jump in? Looks like a great time had by all. Ocean Alexander is a truly beautiful vessel...exceptional lines. Thanks for a great video...love seeing you guys back "on the air!"
@OLOH
@OLOH 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks George! Fortunately Jasper will not jump into water - only walk. It did limit his water time on this outing but we lowered the "teak beach" on the OA for a bit so he could get wet. It is a beautiful boat, one of the few in its class we would consider if we were to ever to go to something newer. Cheers!

We raft our 58’ cruisers to a Princess 65 fly on a cove in Lake Michigan often. The princess has a seakeeper so she doesn’t roll. We have pretty wide gunwales so the superstructure doesn’t get close even if we roll a little.
@OLOH
@OLOH 3 жыл бұрын
That's great. We had thought to engage the zero speed stabilizers on the OA but weren't keen on relying on the technology given how close the superstructures were. Wouldn't have been worth it if it failed to prevent an avoidable situation.

Hey guys Thanks for the video Looked like fun Pretty impressive to see a 70’ yacht rocking back and forth so close to an other yacht … but not as impressive as Tim’s Rocna dance 😜 Question if I may…. I’m always surprised to see you guys or other yachts navigating on the ocean with the clear plastics protectors on..I’d figure on a nice day in Florida at 6 knots you’d take them off while on the fly bridge to feel the breeze… but rarely the case Why’s that? Thanks Bonne journée André
@OLOH
@OLOH 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks André. Great question about our clears. We would love to take them down on days like that and we know from having had them down before for repairs that the boat looks great without them up. Truth is it's a major PIA to do. The seams are also a bit delicate at this point (we're looking forward to replacing them when we get around to it) and we know that removing and reinstalling them would cause some tears so it's better to just leave them be for now. Fortunately our center clear does roll up easily and we usually do that on nice days on the water. More importantly - we're so glad you enjoyed Tim's dance 😄 Cheers!

Thought from a non-boater. How about stern to stern using each boats anchor as a forward spring line? Have maybe 10 feet separation and use a RIB as a floating bridge way pulled between the boats? Sterns could be loosely made together with dock lines to keep them from swinging apart. I guess that means one boat would be stern to the wind…
@OLOH
@OLOH 3 жыл бұрын
Great thought Fred and you do occasionally see large yachts in this configuration. Unfortunately there are just too many variables with wind and current and setting it up so people (and pups) could pass safely between boats, which is the primary purpose of the raft-up, at least for us.
@feversol
@feversol 3 жыл бұрын

Hey Tim, AJ, big fan, you got me hooked. So question, how do you go about plotting your course especially when you can't see land. i have only seen one mention of a course 260. I also watched the episode when you recalculated the compass, going around in circles. After coming out of the circles, how did you know which way to face or which direction to go ? P.S. I live just up the Hudson in Albany NY.
@OLOH
@OLOH 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Charles - thanks for the kind words and nice to hear from a fellow upstate New Yorker. We typically plot our courses on an iPad and that information is shared with our multifunction displays (chartplotters). Between our on-board electronics and compasses, we always know which direction we're facing and where we should be heading 😎 Hope that answers your question!
