In this edition of How2, we take what we've learned to capture a relative compression waveform in a single shot AND add a reference so we can identify which cylinder belongs to what peak.

Thanks Pete. When it gets about to April, I'll be learning on my Pico using my 06 Nissan Frontier as the "test subject!" The compression test is one of many I want to explore. BTW, for guys with new Pico's, "Tested By Techs" has a great 8 part video collection showing "how to" adjust, what to click on, etc. Using the Pico demo, which is free, and watching the T.B.T.'s, you get a good idea of how to use the Pico.

A quick comparison would have been to remove #6 spark plug (no compression) and run the pattern again. Companion cylinder would have made the starter draw pattern plainly visible. Great video!

what has removing num 6 plug wire have to do in what he was showing,,,does that apply to all eng. t.y.
@MotorAgeMagazine

Bruce, what Patrick was suggesting was that I mimic a bad cylinder and show the pattern again. Good idea, but no - has nothing to do with the process I'm showing you. Hook up your own scope, do one the way I show you, then do it again with one spark plug removed so you can see the difference. I look for any "peak" that is not as high as the others. I want to find any cylinder that is weaker than the rest, not just the "dead" ones!

Gratitude and thanks to you; jerry, Vince, Peterson, I was able to troubleshoot several problems on the well cared for 20 year old Toyota corolla 2000; 2wh dr ; 1.8L; automatic tyranny using voltage drop with voltmeter on a crank, no start. It cranks, only on neutral not park. Does the computer think the car is in drive? Is this why throttle position sensor has no voltage reading when opening the throttle vent flap? The relay fuel, was examine outside the fuse box its normal; it was examined under load, the hot side and the control side has power; looped thin wires, hot to ground and control to computer ground, fuel pump activated just fine yet it did not start just cranked with fuel pump running. The 5volt reference is good on all the sensors; the computer is not dead, defective nor shorted however it thinks the neutral safety switch is on drive or reverse, so it shut down throttle and fuel? How do I test the switch, its very close to starting. I have Vince's book too its very clear making learning possible for me. God bless Vince and your techs on motor age and the seminars. Interested in converting fuel source to hydrogen by setting up a electrolysis reservoir, I know it works!

Great basic video Pete. Been watching your videos for quite some time. I own a Pico myself. Superb tool. Wanted to buy another attenuator but the only one I could find on the Picoscope website was a 10:1
@MotorAgeMagazine
@MotorAgeMagazine 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The end result, if you own a 4000-series anyway, is the same. The 4000 has a 100v input max while my original 3000 had a 50v max.
@DylanRabier
@DylanRabier 7 жыл бұрын
Motor Age Yes sir, I have the 4423 with the 100V max input. Didn't know the 3000 series were only 50V.... in that case it is the same 😊
@billyr9840
@billyr9840 7 жыл бұрын
That's why Pico sells the 10:1 now because that is all that is all that is needed with the 100 v input capacity.

I notice that attenuators are never discussed when using Snap-On scopes.
@MotorAgeMagazine
@MotorAgeMagazine 7 жыл бұрын
I called Snap-on tech support. The Verus scope is rated to 400v input, which should be more than enough to cover the inductive kick found on components like fuel injectors and ignition primaries. There is also an over voltage circuit protection built in to their scopes. Just hope it works if you do connect to something higher! GDI injectors are one possibility I'd stay clear off without attenuation.

Hello. If the cam and crank are not in sync, the timing is off and should be able to be seen on the waveform. The firing will be after top dead center, right? Also,Is it a good thing for the cylinder to fire right at top dead center?
@MotorAgeMagazine
@MotorAgeMagazine 3 жыл бұрын
You can use this method to get a feel for timing but I wouldn't rely on it for accuracy. There is a better way to do that. So don't worry too much about it being right at the peak. If timing is off, you'll see it.
@bbmd2200
@bbmd2200 3 жыл бұрын
@@MotorAgeMagazine The only way for me to know the timing is off is if I have good spark, good fuel pressure , good fuel quality and compression.
@MotorAgeMagazine
@MotorAgeMagazine 3 жыл бұрын
@@bbmd2200 All I meant to clarify is that you can see if the timing is off using the comparison between the ignition synch and the relative compression peaks. If you use an in-cylinder pattern with ignition synch you can really see it! That will be coming up much later in my How2 series but I do have an older video on in-cylinder testing that may be helpful: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ6sdpWknNGJoJI

Sure, you can do it the old fashioned way - but how much time are you spending to do that on a modern V6? And on a hunch? Scopes are not that expensive anymore and the time saved more than pays for the investment - in my opinion...
@billyr9840
@billyr9840 7 жыл бұрын
Pete did a vid on a inexpensive scope called the U Scope which can be found at the AES website www.aeswave.com which with a few adapters and attenuator you can measure and observe any signal on a modern vehicle. Here is the adapters you will need - 1 - [03-90-u] AC Pass Filter Adapter @ $17.00 1 - [08-87-BNCF] Flexible Adapter for uScope to BNC @ $8.00 1 - [pt-TA197] High bandwidth 10:1 attenuator @ $59.00 1 - [08-87-BS] Flexible Adapter for uScope to Banana Plugs @ $8.00 1 - [08-788] AES Flexible Adapter Set @ $29.00With these adapters you will be able to adapt any DVM leads or any other accessories that you already own. To further the capabilities of the scope. A low amp clamp, a high amp clamp, a paddle probe, capacitive pickup, and maybe a Inductive pickup can be added. The possibilities are limitless. All this can be found at AESwave. The scope is very affordable very fast and is of high quality which the software is always being upgrade for free to make it even more capable and user friendlier ! I actually own one and for the money it is well worth the cost ! The only drawback is it is only a one channel scope and as Pete has demonstrated in this vid, it is very useful and sometimes needed to have more than one channel !
