super well done videos and deserve a 10 start rating. clearly showing the whole thing with no nonsense talking and repeating to get more video length. I have only thought about making a video of doing something and realized how much time is involved making sure camera can see what is going on and that they are actually turned on. Bought a van with hoping to change out a rocker only to find it was left so long that rocker failed and jammed actually bent the valve. So being an older vehicle I bought an engine but after seeing this video I am going to pull a head and only change that. My engine has less miles than the replacement so hopefully the right decision. Again thanks for the video even though its 8 years old it is helping today

Excellent video series you are the best tech i have seen cant you just take the cylinder head to a machine shop and have them fix the bad valves and seats wouldn't that be much cheaper than buying a new cylinder head this will be my first time doing this i have 80 psi on cylinder 6 rough idle and a serious misfire while van is stoped at stop light i am pretty sure it's the valves i guess I will know when I pull the head off

There was a design issue with the head that was corrected with the revised version. They never explained it to use in any detail but something possible to have to do with the coolant passages I was once told

Dodge Journey 2012 v6. First of all i want to thank you for all you do, You did help me to fix some of my rocker arms, i should share the video. Now after a year i have ticking sound again so i am thinking to replace all rocker arms so i don't have to do it again after a year or so. Is there away to replace them all without messing with the timing belt or aligning the camshaft arrows or TDC? Can i just make marks before i remove the crankshaft and then put it back aligned with the marks?

Hello @MotorCityMechanic. Could you also do the right head gasket without pulling the engine? I've got a 2011 Dodge Avenger 3.6, and the head gasket blew. It's only exhaust to coolant/pressure in overflow. So I'm thinking of replacing it. I don't know which side is blown, but I'm planning on getting both gaskets, but if I need to pull the engine to do the right side I might call my losses.

I cannot remember which head was replaced by dealer under the 150K mile warranty. Right after I did that one, the other head had lifter noise and I had a mechanic replace some rocker arms or possibly he just put everything back in place but, it worked for a long time. I believe he replaced #3 rocker arm so that is the back head right? it is the back head that is making the ticking noise again though
@MotorCityMechanic8 жыл бұрын
Long idle time causes alot of the roller rocker failures that I have seen. They are always Taxi's or fleet vehicles each time (minivans that is). #3 is on the rear head.....right side of engine.

How important is it to have the arrows lined up if the marks on the chain,camphors dimples and the marks on the bearing caps are all lined up? The arrows are approx. 1/4 inch off. By the way a series of videos.

I need your help bro, I'm working on the right side (passenger) 2012 dodge challenger, when marking the timing Actuators and timing chain on the right side, do I line up the lines? And mark them? I know you did the left side and you made sure the arrows were pointing at each other for the left side. Then marked them. How do I line up and mark the right side? The lines on timing Actuators? Or the arrows on the right side? Any help is much appreciated.

Being a taxi and idling alot....possible roller rocker or even a cam shaft lobe worn down due to a bad roller rocker as well. Its a big job but can be done....but special tools as you know are needed so I can understand being reluctant.

This is a question as opposed to a comment. Did not see an email address. I found your video very helpful as I needed to replace an intake cam phaser. As a check I rotated the engine and noticed that the match marks on the phasers and chain did not match. I rotated the engine several more times with the same results. I'm fairly certain the chain did not slip on the crankshaft sprocket during phaser installation. Should those match marks line up when the engine is rotated?

First off Motor City Mechanic, I'd like to thank you. Your guidance is helping people all over the world gain a much needed understanding of their vehicles which I find to be very important for many reasons. I do have a question for you. But first, a quick background: I am checking the rocker arms on my base model 2013 Chrysler 300 3.6L VVT V6. There is a tick coming from passenger side cyl head. Is there a way to rotate the cams manually, so the arrows face each other and the holes are perpendicular to the heads? I am hoping that will put the cams in neutral position ( No Load on Valves) Currently, they are pointed up towards the passenger side of the car, almost perpendicular to the heads. I want the cams in neutral position so that I can hand check the rockers ( wiggle them) to check if they've gone bad. I have not removed the serpentine belt, I have not loosened the sprockets. All I have done is removed the cylinder head valve cover. Thank you much for your guidance.
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words and feedback. When it comes to checking the cams....there is no est position for the valves. You will need to spend some quality time looking over the valve train first. Look at each cam lobe to see if there are any with damage. the outer edges will be cut down it there is. You may need to rotate the engine by hand by putting a socket and ratchet on the balancer bolt. Then you can slowly rotate it and take looks at the valve train until you have checked each cam lobe. With there being a noise....I feel the outer edge of a cam lobe will show you an issue. Then you know which roller rocker it is.

Thanks for the great video set! I'm replacing the valve seals on my 3.6 and have got all the way to removing the head cover (before looking ahead for instructions, oops). Decided to do some research to make sure I don't screw up the timing once I got a look at the cam sprockets. Now I'm stuck because I don't have either of those special tools and no way to borrow or buy one quickly. Any idea on another way to hold the gears in place or how to release the chain without those tools?
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
You will most likely run into a few issues....the tools to hold the cams and the tools for the timing chain tensioners. You will need to remove the cams to get to the valve springs and then the seals. Its not common to need valve stems seals. If you using oil then the one item I highly recommend replacing the pcv valve....its a common cause of oil consumption and exhaust smoke. Otherwise its a job that will need the tools unless you plan on taking the front timing cover off and then the tensioners wont be an issue.
@ocrun67657 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick response. It was a PIA with everything I had to remove to get to this so it's a shame to have to put it all back together. But I can't get to the seals without removing the cam shafts so, damn. Regarding the seals, I had removed the cat and noticed a lot of tar inside the exhaust "manifold" where cyl 2 and 4 port out. Assumed it was bad valve seals leaking oil. Compression and leak down are fine. I did try to remove the PCV multiple times with just about every single tool I have. It's on a wrangler JK and so far haven't been able to loosen the two 25mm torx. Barely can get my hand between the valve and firewall. I bought a finger ratchet just to try this and can get to one scew but I couldn't break it loose with just my fingers. I'm ordering a flex head bit ratchet and will try that when I get it. But I doubt I'll be able to reach the bottom screw. Any good idea to test PCV while on the vehicle? I sucked air through it and didn't feel restricted.
@MotorCityMechanic7 жыл бұрын
The PCV is hard to diag. It has a rubber seal/sleeve that slides over the cam shaft. The old one will be distored and the new will look like a small hole. It seems thats where the oil comes from on the ones I have seen. The torx screws can be a pain in the rear for sure. I use different tools like 1/4 torx drive bits and a flat 1/4 ratchet much like this one: www.zoro.com/general-ratchet-screwdriver-14-slot-2-cross-807sx/i/G2212673/?gclid=CjwKEAjwvMnJBRCO2NSu-Puc6AUSJAAf-OSUYZRODJLESRvFJVrEBQ4a6QxDBvdUpYR9wiPX5VVe_BoCnpTw_wcB

how often do you find yourself replacing the heads on the 3.6s?
@83wildmustang3 жыл бұрын
Getting ready to remove my head. In the process of marking my cam phasers, chains and a mark on the cam bearing cap as well. Is it normal for my cam phasers to not be stopped at the same place as yours? My groove on my cam phasers isn’t lined up like yours? It’s sitting more at 2 O’ clock position. The arrows are pointed other direction. Do I still mark the groove on cam phasers even if they are different than yours?

@@83wildmustang I went ahead and took off without them...hopefully it works out 😅 love to see other women doing their own work!! Curious, how much did you end up paying for the rebuild on the head? Did you send it to a machine shop?
@83wildmustang2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I took everything off down to the block, heads, timing cover and oil pan. I had a head gasket issue as well as ticking noise. So ended up with replacing a lot of parts since I was there. 149k miles went ahead and installed new timing chain kit, lifers, rockers, heater core and a bunch of other parts. Everything oil coolant mixture touched new. Total cost I spent including oil and coolant changes plus tools was little over $3k. Yes always good to see other woman mechanics too wrenching on their own vehicles.. 😁

Question: if I put a strong rare earth magnet on the valve covers ABOVE the cam phase adjusters, can I ruin them? or do they need to actually touch something magnetic

I would say dont. If you place them in a magnetic parts try.....it will damage them and they will be needed. I wouldnt chance it to find out.

What is the service interval for the timing chain? I can't seem to find this info anywhere.
@MotorCityMechanic6 жыл бұрын
On the 3.6 there is no interval. Chrysler never gives an interval on the chain....just the timing belts when it applies. Thanks for the question. Over time if there is an issue with stretching......you would get codes related once the cam and crank sensors didnt sync up anymore or get out of the normal range.
@lexmaximaguy87886 жыл бұрын
timing chains are generally for the life of the engine. They never need changes. Unless the engine is neglected or their is a design defect in the chains..
