It’s the chlorinated brake clean. Non-chlorinated won’t do it as bad. We use the non-chlorinated like hand cleaner. B12(chlorinated) will leave chemical burns.

I have both. Each one is better for certain types of oil or grease. Also, non chlorinated dries super fast. But honestly, if I'm cleaning anything with a can, and it has plastic around, I'm using electronics cleaner. Not the electric motor cleaner or any brake or carb cleaner.

Nitrile IS a type of rubber, commonly called NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber). It is unique from other rubbers as it is very resistant to oil, fuel, and other chemicals, but it is still a type of rubber.
@TheWallsocket

It also still gets damaged by brake cleaner and brake fluid. If a material says it’s not suitable for use in brake systems (like the data sheet for nitrile says in this very video) that’s a good indicator it’s also not suitable to be used with brake cleaner.

I started using 9mil nitrile gloves over latex since the cleaners demolish latex in seconds. Nitrile holds up a bit better but my nitrile gloves still expand, get soft, and start breaking easier with a brake cleaners. Rubber/nitrile/Viton is not recommended for brake cleaner. It even says so in that picture, it will over time degrade and eat the bonds and break down over time. EPDM on the other hand has a much better chemical reaistance if you could replace each O'ring would last a real long time.

Honestly no O-Ring manufacturer will certify it against any solvent, the sad truth is, all solvent will at some point destroy it. @@adobomoto thanks yep I've seen it, your brake cleaner might be more rubber compatible than what it usally find. Typically, if I wear a nitrile gloves pair, if one gets brake cleaner on it, you can be sure that the one exposed to break cleaner gonna tear pretty quicker while working than the other one. Same for the chain, at some point I find split O-Ring on the floor and the chain stretch faster du to the diluted grease inside by the break cleaner. Nevertheless it's only my experience, your's could be different. At the end, use whatever you feel like, a chain is not that expensive anyways, now I get mostly non O-Ring chain from did, love it especially on dirt roads. Never get unbranded chain, I almost got stranded in the desert from a $30 Amazon one. Every link were cracker and I had a spare master link fortunately.

I have found the same thing. I buy low VOC brake cleaner and nitrile gloves. The gloves eventually break down over repeated exposure to brake cleaner. I think if this guy isn’t having issues, it’s because his brake cleaner is gentler than what I’m using. Just buy a dedicated chain degreaser, no point in ruining your o-ring chain prematurely. I'm no mechanic, but a detailer. I don't use brake cleaner much except for cleaning undercoating off of stuff it shouldn't be on. You're kind of right. Nitrite gloves do resist brake cleaner a lot better than most rubbers but it isn't completely impervious to it. You can test it by just spraying a bunch on some of those gloves you have. First it'll make the glove feel looser, then it'll start to discolor, and then the material will get really thin and flimsy feeling and it'll break very easy. Eventually if it's exposed to enough brake cleaner for enough time it'll start to decay.

Instead of looking at O-ring data, just read the manual that comes with the chain. For example, from DID's website: Clean the chain by wiping with a soft cloth dampened with an O-Ring/X-Ring® safe cleaner and dry completely every 300miles (500kms) to prevent surface rust and ensures maximum performance. To protect X-Ring®, NEVER use steam, thinner or such volatile solvents as gasoline or benzene (BRAKE CLEANER), and a wire bush as well. Lube the chain every other use with an O-Ring/X-Ring safe lubricant. Just because it seems to work, and you have done it for a long time doesn't mean it is the right thing to do.

@culverap
@culverap Жыл бұрын
@@adobomoto I can understand not making a big deal about it, but it is hard to not disagree with your comments when the manufacturers of motorcycle chains are clearly recommending the exact opposite of what you are promoting. Another example from RK Chains: RK Chain recommends cleaning a sealed chain with only a mineral based O ring safe chain cleaner. Do not use kerosene, mineral spirts, diesel fuel, brake cleaner, motor oil or any caustic chemicals because that can damage the seals. RK recommends that you douse a rag with the mineral based O ring cleaner and wipe the dirt off the chain. Do not use a wire brush or hard bristle brush to clean a sealed chain. The wire or hard bristles can damage the seals reducing the life of the chain. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING A MOTORCYCLE O-RING CHAIN SPECIFIC CLEANER AND LUBE.

Hate to break it to you, but orings are a type of synthetic rubber, and silicone. Depends on what rating you have, some orings can take brake cleaner, some cant. All depends on who manufactured them, that looks like an rk chain, so those are actually made out of silicone propylene compound. If that is an rk chain. Cant really tell if it is, so yeah its perfectly fine to use brake cleaner on that chain, if its a neoprene compound, you absolutely do not want to use brake cleaner on it, it wont melt the rings, it will dry rot them. If they are dry rotted, they wont hold the lube in the chain. Its not like its gonna damage your chain, but you'll be lubing it up alot.

I think you continue to miss the issue. Brake cleaner evaporates the chain grease it’s assembled with. Leaving o-rings that aren’t holding any grease in place, in other words dried out. Re-lubing your chain will never replace the high viscosity grease encapsulated by the o-ring during assembly by the manufacturer. What results is o-rings that aren’t lubed properly, get hot and deteriorate after heat cycles. Don’t believe me? Spray brake cleaner on oil or grease next time, it’s magical at cleaning that stuff up. It does the same to your chain grease. It zaps it right out of there.

Brake cleaner WILL oxidize nitrile and neoprene. You don't have the same "service duty" with gloves on your hands as the O-rings in your chain. Not all are oil proof, and not all that are oil proof are solvent proof, so to clean orings intended to be used in oil/greese don't use solvents like brake cleaner but light oils like kerosene, or degreesing products specialy made for it. If you greese non oil proof oring you won't have problem right away, even may show improvement instantly, but will turn to gunk and desintegrate sometime later, and ones in contact with solvents that are not solvent proof will get stiff and sometimes even expand, like some silicones will in gasoline.

Yes, it will over time. Brake part cleaner breaks down carbon based stuff. Rubber is organic and carbon based however it is a composite material that also contains latex. BIC-600 disc brake cleaner will not harm it and is safe to use. It also depends if your chain has o-rings or not. Some don't.

Brake cleaner will eat away at rubber. But orings are a composite material, they aren’t 100% rubber, they are made to resist some of the harshest conditions and chemicals. A bit of brake cleaner can’t hurt them
@m73m95
@m73m95 Жыл бұрын
Brake clean won't harm the o-rings, but you shouldn't be using it anyway. When you clean your chain, you don't want to strip the lubrication that's already on the chain. You just want to get rid of the dirt, so you can apply more lube without mixing it with grit... You should use diesel/kerosene/or similar solvent that won't completely strip what's already there

Yes an actual chain cleaner solvent (aerosol). If you can’t afford that use scalding hot water and Dawn dish soap. Both will remove oil, grease, Dirt and other contaminants without the chance to ruins anything especially o rings… rinse it off, let it dry then spray some lubricant. I prefer chain wax to chain lube because the wax won’t fling everywhere on your rims, brakes, under fender etc.

I do think that the brake cleaner will cause the o ring to dry out faster in the long run causing tearing and cracking, which is what you don't really want. Those gloves you throw away after you're done maintaining and you'll grab a new pair.

I had it said to me that brake cleaner will destroy my chain, after using motul chain cleaner I noticed its basically brake cleaner. After that, i took a couple of O-rings, stick them in a tube and filled it with brake cleaner from Wurth. O-rings remained the same after 2 days, so I thought cleaning for a couple of minutes wont do any harm. Cleaned the chain for a couple of years with the same brake clean and the chain was as new still.

@lrowlands53
@lrowlands53 Жыл бұрын
Why do you think you need to clean a chain with brake cleaner? The O-rings are there to keep dirt out and lubricant in. At most, you should just wipe the chain down with a rag and spray some lube on the outside to minimise wear between the chain rollers and the sprockets. Chains actually wear via the pins which join each link. Do not, repeat, do not use a powerful solvent on an O-ring chain no matter some other self proclaimed genius says. A motorcycle chain has a big job to do - including not failing when you are doing 200kph and it's nothing like a bicycle chain. That is, a chain that typically gets soaked in a solvent to clean it and then dried and re-relubed.

I run a DID X ring on my dirtbike. After washing the bike I immediately wipe the chain down with a rag, spray with wd40 to help repel the water, wipe again, ride the bike up and down the street to fling any lingering water out and then apply a heavy coat to the underside of the chain with maxima, motul or belray silicone chain lube.

No ,it doesn't "melt " the o-rings however the o-rings are under compression, after application of "certain" brake cleaners they will expand slightly and some times, they will split and come off. The o-rings are chemical resistant NOT chemical proof. Now what will melt the o-rings is the friction that builds up heat THEN the nitrile o-rings will melt because the brake cleaners wash away the lubricant that is supposed to lubricate the o-rings so they don't heat up so much. The function of the o-rings is to retain lubricant for the pin and inner roller, the chain lube is to lube the outside roller to the sprocket to the surface of the inside roller to the outside roller. The chain lube uses the same base chemicals of brake cleaner but not all the other chemicals and NOT in the same quantity and are used to dilute the lubricant to an overly thin state , so the wearing surfaces of the outside roller and "guess what" lubricate the o-rings. It is best to lubricate when the chain is hot, this is needed so the components and clearances are larger than when cold and the heat speeds up the diluting chemicals faster , the o-rings are not negatively affected and the lubricant jells up as, a grease. Calling someone a moron or cursing them is a sign of a weak position or argument. A little information is as bad as wrong information if the information lacks context.

isn't brake cleaner essentially pressurized acetone? From what I remember, we used acetone to clean organic compounds off of glass in o-chem class. Just from my experience, nitrile gloves fall apart way more easily anytime i use brake cleaner as opposed to when I don't.

No, products that are made from petroleum will break down over time when ethanol based products are applied to them. You don’t notice this when you’re using those mechanics gloves because you’re using a new pair each time. Next time use just keep using the same pair and let me know how long it takes before they start easily deteriorating.

They are def made out of o variety of rubber and silicate. Just because you have a gloves that doesn't allow liquids to penetrate, it doesn't mean the O rings are designed to repeal cleaners they are designed to seal from liquids and dirt. The gloves are worn for a short period. Dip them in dw40 for 2 days and then see. Dw40 is acidic not like oil. But I'm glad you're the smartest person in the world.

Have you ever sprayed that very brake clean on those very gloves? I have and it distorts and expands those gloves. It's so so not the same as the o rings. I’m not a mechanic, and a lot of people will probably give me shit for this this but I’ve always 1. Sprayed my chain with water 2. Sprayed it with a can of silicone lubricant from Walmart until it the drip off runs clear (usually half a can) 3. And than I’ll take a proper chain lube and spray it while squeezing it with a piece of rubber or cloth that won’t shed kinda like packing a bearing. It’s not proper, it’s not pretty, but I’ve had chains last me 30-40 thousand miles before. I think it’s more about the quality and just making sure there’s always some sort of lubrication throughout all those tiny linkages. Just my two cents but for me it works
