Motorcycle route planning on 2020 Africa Twin with Apple CarPlay, Beeline Moto and Quad Lock

Here's my process of planning routes on the new 2020 Honda Africa Twin. Now we have Apple CarPlay it's not as easy to upload .gpx files to a supported app. This workaround allows you to have the best of both worlds by supporting your setup with Beeline Moto.

Nice tips there thanks ! I’ve tried different options now and realised that the Osmand app is CarPlay compatible ! The app is not easy to use but once you are used to it, it works fine !

You can do a route on google maps and add way points along the route, effectively making the route go the way you want it to. Use either your phone to plan the routes and when its plugged in to the bike and you have a headset, you can then navigate the set route. You have to choose a start place and a destination, then touch the 3 dots next to the star place box, then select add a stop,then touch the add a stop box on the three lines and move that stop above the destination. Now you can add stop and choose on map and put the Red Cross on the road you want to travel on. Keep adding along the route to your destination. Now press finished and then start. Plug your phone in and select google maps on CarPlay and away you go 🙂 Probably best not having the route go to far and having several routes or one a day on holiday. Google maps is great with the satellite view on the CRF1100 and works really nice.

But there are two serious limitations. You cannot add waypoints (only stops). And you cannot save your route (for adhoc re-loading). When Google's Waze app solves these aspects, with synch to MyMaps of Google Maps online, all GPS device's will become dodo's.

Some good information there. I must confess I would still use my Garmin GPS, it could be mounted where you mount your phone. I like to plan my routes using Basecamp, and transfer to GPS. Each to there own!!

You can use carplay without headset or headphones. 1 Connect phone. 2 When bike prompts you to connect headset say no. 3 When screen reverts to speedometer press and hold the back button for about 7 seconds. 4 Screen will then display carplay and work with no sound device connected.

Also. If you have never connected a headset initially this will not work. You need to have had a headset connected initially, and then after that you won't need it next times.

Hi, I have a question :) I am not able to start the carplay with my 2021 I-phone 11 MAX. When I switced to my old I-Phone 7 it worked strait away. Any thoughts ? What kind of I phone are you using ?

You stated that using the Kurviger.de website for route planning it saved the route in any format. Or loads of different formats. Cant it then save it in a format comparable to the CarPlay system and provide the route details on the main bike screen. Your thoughts!!!

Au up pal, just bought same bike , same color. Also from Craigs Honda and yes I delt with Keigh. I'm also from Leeds. Basically I'm you in another dimension that somehow are co existing in the same plane. I think 🤔🤔🤔 Anyway question is this .... Do you know what you need to put Pannier racks on one of these. With it not having the passenger grab rack dose that matter. Any info would be crush die 👍 Cheers

Good vid, but bollocks that you can’t use car play unless you use a Bluetooth headset, and you still have to mount the phone which is pointless as you might as well use your phone.. If there was a box to stick your phone in on charge out of the way then great .. but there isn’t?...

Nice video! How do you use calls ?? When my phone is connected to the bike the carplay and the music works to my cardo packtalk. But when receiving calls or trying to make a call the receiving end can't hear me but i can hear them. I dont know how to fix this and its driving me crazy as the whole point is that you should not need to stop, remove helmet and disconnect phone from bike to be able to take och make a call ... ? anyone?

Very easy-to-follow video, thank you. If I may, I hear lots of worry about iPhones on bikes with vibration harming the cameras. I see you use a straight quadlock. Any worries on the AT? Quadlock makes a vibration dampener that looks interesting. Also, charger. Any thoughts?

@@ANONYMOUSBIKERUSA Never did, so I tried it for myself. Had the vibration thing but gave up on relying on a cel phone for navigation. In the summer, when it is hot, the phone would overheat and shutdown. Went with a Garmin Montana. All the best!

Contacted tomtom. They told me will update tomtom go with mydrive, probably before the end of the year. At the moment could be the only solution to plan a route online and import/export gpx.
