Motorcycle Security Defeated by a $0.01 Resistor

This is the story of how I discovered the hard way that many motorcycles have a hidden security feature, that can easily be bypassed by a cheap resistor.

I don't know how many rabbit holes my friends and I went down trying to troubleshoot stuff. One of them ALWAYS said, did you you change the spark plug on an ATV we were working on. Which was never the problem. Once, we were in the desert, couldn't get one started, tried everything. My friend mentioned the sparkplug. We changed it out, having no other idea what could be wrong and it freaking worked. Air, fuel, spark. Check them all when trying get a motor started. 🙂

Yeah... Security is often more annoying than it is helpful. It may prevent you from starting the your car, but thieves... no. Early 2000s Ford and GM keys gave everyone no end of grief.

In this case, like you said... if they even so much as changed the resistance on each bike they'd at least have to waste time having to fiddle with a variable resistor or something.🤷‍♀️

Yeah, it blows my mind that all these bikes used 100 ohms. They wouldn’t even need to change the ECU, just use two resistors that add up to 100 ohms - one in the ignition switch, and one further up the wire near the ECU 😖

Good eye! It’s a 1640, made as an SD but had a hard disk fitted at some point. I’m working on a video about it for my other (retro gaming) channel
