For the first time motorcycle helmet buyers I would strongly recommend purchasing helmet at a brick and mortar store. You can take super acurate measurments and follow the sizing charts to the dot but it will not guarantee a best fit. I purchased my first helmet online and had it shipped to my workplace. Excited with my new purchase I tried it on right after signing for the package. Even though I measured and remeasured my head and followed manufacturers sizng chart the helmet was way to tight. It took me five minutes to take the thing off. Luckily nobody saw me because I don't know what I would have said.

i had a salesman told me to wear a children size helmet (which was way too tight; starting to feel dizzy). the salesman told me (just by looking) that the helmet was still too big but asked me to dent the foam inside the helmet (damage the foam structure) to fit my head... i was like... ah... no, bye...

I used to beat a dents in the foam on my dirt bike helmets all the time. I got a long pointy head. Way back in the boondocks and your head is hurtin. Get desperate. I used a big water bottle todent it in .when I'm buying a high dollar helmet. It is a different story though.

Good pointers! I researched all of this before getting my MC license two years ago, despite having been an avid snowmobiler for 20+ years. Many of the rules are the same, but it had been a long time. It was worth it to do it right! I ordered a helmet (Bell Vortex) in one size, since I was between - but I went up. Too big. Sent it back, and the next size down (L) was better. So I'm glad you mentioned that part!

First off, thanks for the videos dedicated to us newbies, those are a lot of help! If I may, I could give you couple of more ideas for newbie riders, maybe you will find them interesting too: 1. how to park on incline (different scenarios etc) 2. How to climb up your bike on to the side walk (lets say you want to go the shop, and side walk is higher than a road) 3. How to ride on really steep downhills (breaking and turning advice ) Big thanks and great work!

2 important points you didn't really mention: 1) Padding will settle over time so initial tightness will diminish. 2) Head shape. My helmet fitted great when new but now that the padding has settled a bit I notice it's too round for my head. This leaves too much space on the sides which are a huge source of noise.
@SnoopyDoofy
@SnoopyDoofy 7 жыл бұрын
If you are getting dizzy because it's'too tight after only 10 minutes it's probably too small. Have you measured the circumference of your head? Check the helmet: either at the back above the neck if there's something about size printed there or inside behind the liner (sticker on the EPDM foam) for the manufacturer's recommended head circumference for that size. If your head circumference falls outside this range it's probably always going to be too tight. Additionally, the cheaper the helmet the less shell sizes they make (to save costs) and they make up the sizes using padding. If need be, you could go up a size with only the padding later on. But again, if the small is the largest size for that shell size, it's likely just too small. A new helmet should fit snugly and slightly uncomfortable (due to the snugness) but it shouldn't hurt (No pressure points anywhere) or cause dizzyness. That's a definite no-no. I suggest taking it back now you still can and do some more fitting. Don't be afraid to walk around a shop with a helmet on your head for 10 - 15 minutes. It's perfectly acceptable. Additionally, if you ride mostly during the day or the evening I would suggest a helmet without an internal sun visor. They make helmet shells heavier and larger than they need be (and hence louder), aren't very dark and quite flimsy. A tinted visor isn't that expensive and looks cool. The absolute best option IMHO is a photo-chromatic visor, you might want to ask about availability of those for your chosen helmet. It's a visor that turns from clear to dark depending on the amount of sunlight. It's absolutely brilliant. A tad pricy, but you only need one visor ever (and 1 pinlock if you use them). I hope you find your perfect helmet.

Highly recommend going to a store and trying on multiple helmets. According to HJC online measurements, I should wear an XL. In real life, I have a very oval head, and can't even get an XL onto the top of my head. I had to go to a 5XL to get fit that didn't make "hot spots" on my forehead.
@cubs197

Jim O'Rourke 5XL? You know they make helmets with different head shapes right? I bet if you bought an long oval helmet you'd go down in size.

That size difference is extreme and indicates some shape mismatch. HJC tend to have rounder helmets. LS2 have more long oval that could work better for longer heads shapes.

For me, the most important feature of helmet is the shape. As I have round shape head, there are not many models that I can choose. Oval shape helmets will put pressure on my forehead and two sides at the top of my head. So, first question I ask is, do you have round shape helmets?

buy the replacement foam pad that fit to your head. the problem is not on helmet, but the pad. the most annoying part of buying riding gear is the helmet, sometime we got the right size helmet, not to big and not to heavy, but the pad sometime not fit. I spent 1 hour just to pick helmet for my wife, when I pick S size it too small, when I pick M size it have gap, and I'm stuck for hour just to find the correct foam pad for my wife. and for goodness, try not buy helmet online, you must test feel it in the store before purchase it.

Sizing charts can be way off. Your best bet is to try on the model locally and see what fits. By measurement I wear a size XL, I can barely get it on my head. The XXL fits like a champ, even though the chart says otherwise. Going smaller can be a mistake, but new riders may not know what is the right amount of pressure to expect orxwant, and walking around with a helmet in a store is just gross, do you want someone else's sweaty helmet?

@@Supernova12034 you do know that when buying a snowmobile helmet most if not all will say "not for street use". Fun fact The same goes for CE ratings. Dirt bike rated gear is not the same as Street bike rated gear. Buy the right gear for the activity you are doing.

@@benjaminjwilson6694 DOT only rated helmets are garbage anyway, I'd trust the average dirt helmet rated for MX over DOT. I only wear ACU Gold helmets on top of the UK required ECE minimum so something certified for track use in tHE UK/any event run under ACU rules. SNELL isn't a bad rating for the us but it has some issues but it's a good start.

the cheek pads should break in after a while, they're soft padding. The forehead though, might be that you got a helmet that fits a rounder head than yours, you probably being a more oval head than the helmet is made for. I think the most important part of a helmet that needs to fit properly is the crown "cup", the part that fits your upper skull, the rest can brake in or can be swapped for thinner padding, usually.

A full face helmet is the most protective. However, a modular helmet is a close second (by modular I assume you mean the full face helmet that you can lift the chin up before putting the helmet on, correct?). I hope you don't mean an open face helmet, I'd never recommend those. So, a good quality modular helmet would be good for you.
