Want an inexpensive motorcycle toolbox that you always goes with you? This DIY Ammo Can hack makes uses Outback Motortek pannier racks and the Mosko Moto Backcountry Pannier kit to do just that. (and probably works on other pannier racks/kits as well)
Once you've got the right parts it should only take 20 minutes to install. Even though the ammo can is pretty small I found it plenty big for the essentials - a spare tube, small tire levers, a pump, patch kit, and some various critical wrenches and drivers. Plenty for quick trailside maintenance should you need to make an adjustment to your bike or have an unfortunate flat tire.
What you need to make your own simple motorcycle tool box:
- Outback Motortek Pannier Racks (standard version, or similar) @Outbackmotortek
- Mosko Moto Backcountry Pannier Kit (or similar) @MoskoMoto
- Small Ammo Can (see link below for what I used)
- Mosko Moto / Voile Straps - 20" length (or similar)
In the video I show how I did this tool kit hack on my Yamaha Tenere 700, but I also checked the fit on my wife's KTM 790 adventure and it worked perfectly there as well. The key seems to be the Outback Motortek rack and Mosko Moto Backcountry Pannier Kit (or at least the wedges and pucks (backing plate and attachment brackets) cause this is what makes it work so well. Other brands of racks and luggage might work, but it's hard to argue with how well this goes together.
I was really surprised with not only how well this worked but also how easy it was to install. The fit is like it was made for it and the straps hold the ammo can very securely in place. If you've already got the racks and luggage, the cost is less than $50! (about $20 for the straps and $20 for the ammo can).
In the past, I have gone the tool tube route, using a PVC or ABS tube. You can actually see the last one of these I built in this youtube video ( • 14 Budget Friendly Acc... ) on my Africa Twin. But new bike, new tool kit. And I like the space and ease of access for this ammo can tool box a bit better than the tool tube, which made it hard to reach things that fell to the very bottom.

Thanks for the great idea, just received the box and it indeed fits behind the Mosko wedge plate, I am now waiting for the Moslo straps. My 790 has the KTM (made by Touratech rack), which panier rack does your wife has on the 790? I am concerned with the swing arm clearance...

My wife also had the outback motortek rack and there isn't am issue with the swingarm. But the touratech may sit closer in, which could definitely present an issue. How close is it?

@@PointsUnknownTV It is not easy to measure. Assuming the panier frames are parallel to the bike, I used a dry wall ruler cutter which is exactly 2" wide, touching the panier inside frame on one side, that left 3/4" to the swing arm widest point. Knowing that the panier frame is on 3/4" tube, this means the box can be 3.5" wide in theory., which is a bit short of the box 3.7" but there is no way that wide point of the swing arm would come up that high. The only way to really prove it would be to drop the rear shock, and move the swing arm up to try. I think it would touch the exhaust on the right before. BTW, I have the R model which is tall, the rally is even taller, perhaps your wife has the S which is lower. Anyway, can you measure on your 790? BTW I subscribed to your blogs, really cool. FYI, I live very close to Alice's and travel a lot, including Africa at the Daker 90 on my Honda Africa Twin 650 RD03, that I bought again in France. I also have friends in our group doing the silk road on T7. We do a lot of Moab, Death Valley rides every year. We should connect.

Yeah. It's just about even with the swingarm on the S with the OM racks. But like you said, unlikely it would actually hit. Try it out (carefully) and see?
