Strange how we all seem to like the same things, I don't sport any jewellery/earrings/ noserings/ dangly gold ropechains but I am a lover of watches and particularly fond of Sekondas and anything chunky or diving related, the timepiece you featured was an excellent looking piece, which I'm going to research and possibly buy as you've regenerated my interest. Thanks for another interesting vlog Stu, be well 😊✌️

For me, the Orient Ray II (blue dial of course), is the ultimate 'beater' watch. A do everything 200m mechanical diver, hacking with day date complication. Now that a broad range of Orient tool, dress and dive watches are available on Amazon, these seriously underrated time pieces are accessible to a wider audience to enjoy.

I find “aviator” watches a very interesting subject because I have actually used them in anger. For me the most important things in such a watch are 1. A clear unambiguous display where none of the hands can be misread as another (it really buggers up your nav. Been there. Seen it. Got the T-shirt.). 2. A very clear second hand (useful for not bumping into hills and things in a let-down). 3. No superfluous guff. 4. The ability to read the watch in low (typically red) light conditions. This watch ticks those boxes pretty well and is a good looking bit of kit and certainly one that I would wear. The big question is, which would I prefer; this one or Seiko’s Military watch? A legacy from my grandmother enabled me to buy a Breitling Aerospace watch (the less blingy blue one) some years ago and even though it is 30 times more expensive than the Orient Flight Mk.II it is less useful as an aviation watch than this one. Believe it or not, although nowhere near as pretty is any of the watches above, the best watch for aviation I’ve actually owned is a Timex Expedition - £19.50.

My old Vostok i loved it because it had the 12 and 24 hour dial ,the bezel i used all the time .I always stayed on home time and used the 24 hour and bezel to compansate for the time difference for the visiting country i was in .

Just found this video when scrolling through your back catalogue. We gents of a certain age do seem to have similar tastes and interests! I have a few mechanical watches but hadn’t come across Tus or ever paid attention to Orient! Now you’ve put me onto another like of research. Thank you I very much enjoy your videos and like it or not your common sense conclusions about the way the (motorcycling) world is going are exactly ‘on the money’.

Watching some of your videos should come with a warning that they may be a contributing factor in emptying your wallet! About a month ago I watched one of your reviews on an Orient watch, I think that it was the Defender. I was quite taken with this review and looked at Orient watches out of interest and ended up buying one of these Pilot watches. I must admit that I have no regrets, it is a thing of beauty. Thank you for the light hearted, entertaining and honest reviews. And don't worry, you are not alone in your obsession with the Bullet, I have the same obsession with mine. 😂

Mr. Fillingham- Like you, I enjoy the "mechanicalness" of my auto-winding watch. Mine is a Hamilton because my Dad and Grandfather favored this maker. I find the day and date features are even more helpful to a retired person such as myself than the time hands.

Careful with those eBay HMT’s. Sadly a lot, but not all of them are bastardised examples with rough cases, “custom” dials and worse…. Dirty movements that need servicing and cleaning the moment you receive them.

A very nice watch! I have a couple of Vostok watches, an Amphibian, black with orange bezel, and a Komandirskie with a 24 hour face. Both are automatic and their combined cost was £150 direct from Russia. I put a very nice leather Nato strap on the Komandirskie and an Orange Nato strap on the Amphibia. Both are fantastic watches for the money and get generate far more interest than my more expensive watches.

My other fetish, well hobby is also watches. Numbering close now to 300 pieces. Everything from WW1 Trench, WW2 Rolex, flieger, Vietnam issue to everyday Casio, Seiko, Citizen etc, etc. My attraction to military watches in particular came via my late father who was in the Australian Imperial Forces in WW2, along with 5 uncles. All came home thank God. No physical injuries but all plagued with what we now call PTSD. I have tried not to wear watches while on my bikes but I’m fully addicted to them. I love these flieger homage watches or the like with the stories behind them. Good topic Stuart. 👍🏼🇦🇺 Oh & you seem completely normal to me mate! 🚽🤭

Haven't worn a watch whilst riding since 2008 when I took a Suzuki Bandit into a ditch at 65mph ! Not sure what caused it but I ended up with a chunk out of my wrist ( steel strap ) and a rather worse for wear Citizen watch ....not to mention the bike ( new exhaust fitted 2 days previous) and my severely dislocated shoulder ! Bike and watch right offs ...I survived ! Nice watch that but I wish you'd stop spending my money ! 😉

Hi Stu - wandering through the channel last night & my wife said "Have you got a brother in Yorkshire, or is that just you doing the accent?" (I'm Glaswegian) - confirming that there is indeed a community of us older blokes fed up with disposable consumer culture and tending to embrace the same kinds of things - real clothing, real bikes, real watches and so on. One of the things I most resent about late capitalism is that it intentionally de-skills you to increase your dependency on one corporation or another for products or services. Over-complicated, un-self-serviceable machinery is a prime example. Another is shaving. We got used to paying more and more for overboiled cartridge shavers that require (apparently) ever more blades and strips of chemical slime to do an adequate job of scraping stubble off your face. Fed up with this, a few years ago I dug out my old Gillette safety razor I'd had since I was a boy ("I'd no idea they still make the blades") and reverted to that for a while, but it still bothered me that I was entirely dependent on a disposable component of uncertain quality; besides I still couldn't get a nice clean edge around a tache or beard. You can see where this is going... I began a small collection of straight razors picked up from local antique shops mostly, for which I've rarely paid more than a tenner. I watched KZbin videos, bought a couple of whetstones and leather strops and set about acquiring the skills to maintain and use them that my grandfathers took for granted. This morning I used a Sheffield "wedge" from around 1830 (£15) that after some light restoration delivers in half an hour a barber-shop shave that will last all day. Few things are more satisfying - the beauty of the tool, its antiquity and hand-made character, the skill to bring it back to serviceable condition and then to use it confidently to get a far better shave, leaving your skin in far better condition, than ever before in half a century of face-scraping. It's such a small thing - shaving - but it represents how poorly served we are by a consumer culture that disempowers us and robs us of everyday satisfactions.

It‘s kind of funny: I was searching for a review of Orient Flieger watches, saw a thumbnail that looked nice and clicked on it and suddenly a video started to play, made by Mr. Fillingham, my beloved one and only motorcycle channel. Triumph, RE, Tripmachine and these watches obviously have the same vibes. And the best of all: the black watch is out of stock at Amazon but i got one from this company you linked to. 😎

I didnt know of this Orient. Keep on reviewing watches, please. Btw, I think all of the five brands producing the German „Fliegers“ then are still on the market today: 1) Stowa and 2) Laco still make exact modern replica pieces of their original Flieger watches type A and B and have many friends all over the world, 3) Wempe is a German manufacturer of which you probably have never heard of but 4) IWC is a very well known Swiss luxury brand and, yes, 5) A. Lange und Söhne (lets say „Lange and Sons“ in English, cause A. actually is the abbreviation of …) is t h e super duper German most luxurious brand well known to most watch enthusiasts all over the world like IWC, Breitling, Omega, of course Rolex and many more. Rolex, did you know that (?), actually worked for the Brits in WW II, although Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex and a very anglophile man was a born German. Well, understandable one would argue after WW II.
