Just a note about the release of this song.... in 1984 Bronze Records decided they were going to put out a Motorhead retrospective (the band's classic lineup had splintered and the label had little confidence that the new lineup would regain their lost momentum), and when Lemmy got wind of this idea he insisted on (a) selecting all the tracks and (b) recording four new songs - "Killed by Death", "Snaggletooth", "Steal Your Face" and "Locomotive" - with the new lineup for inclusion on the album to demonstrate that Motorhead were not finished. "Killed By Death" was the single released to promote the compilation. They left Bronze after that, but kept going for another 31 years.

This song is just epic. Maybe one of the most simple songs I'm aware of but it's self sufficient, it doesn't need more. Just 1 chord progression going on and on. We'll all be killed by death, there's something simple, badass and universal in that song. Epic.

Funny thing about Motorhead is that they came around when metal and punk were exploding and people were debating whether they were punk or metal. Lemmy always insisted they were just a rock and roll band, and there's some truth to that. Motorhead is basically rock and roll with the energy/rawness of punk and the distortion/speed of metal. It's why they were probably the band that inspired Metallica the most. They were also the singular influence on the entire black metal genre.

@@falafel1980 Motorhead predated all of those bands by a good several years. Venom, the band that basically coined the term black metal and influenced Bathory, were basically a Motorhead-wannabe band. Sodom and Bathory came much later, and the only similarity between Mercyful Fate and black metal is King Diamond's makeup (their music is classic metal ala Priest and Maiden).

Motorhead, with the time of their formation and their sound, were a band liked by both punks and metalhead. How loved was Lemmy? There's a video on KZbin of Lemmy, not long before his death, onstage saying he was about to collapse and couldn't continue the show. Not one boo from the crowd, just people yelling out for him to feel better and they loved him. People knew Lemmy was the real deal and would perform no matter what, so for this to happen, he had to be feeling pretty bad. RIP Lemmy.

Lemmy never gave up even when he knew he was dying from his failing health, he put an album and toured within months of the day he died. He was 100% himself all the time. "No Remorse" was a transition from the old, "classic" Motorhead, to the new, 4-piece Motorhead, after Eddie Clarke left. So it served a double purpose, in picking out highlights from the band's career so far, and also introducing the new line up. So, although it was a compilation album, it also contained four new songs, of which this was one. That's why it may seem odd, being on a compilation album but nowhere else.
