Motorhome USB Quick Charge ports DIY install

How to convert your 12V cigarette lighter port to twin USB quick charging ports easily. With the right tools this is an easy one hour project. Future changes to say usb C ports will be easy to swop over to. The usb port and ciggy port are each protected with a 15A fuse.
You will need crimper, terminals, wire cutters, torx screwdriver and USB port unit.
There are many different USB ports out there, this is an example, be aware this particular one has an overly touch sensitive on/off switch, so it's too easy to turn it on or off! - beware:

You should not cut the wire while the battery is connected. The black is grounded, remove first Then the thick positive wire The other positive wire is one which was to light up to indicate its in use. Remove it from the socket and insulate it.

Great video, thanks. I got rid of the hopeless single, slow USB socket and the 12v socket, replacing them with 2 x double 3A Fast Charge sockets, at the same time hardwiring my Nextbase dashcam and Garmin satnav for the motorhome. A terrific, clear video. Thanks!

Nice helpful video. I did mine a couple of months ago. I replaced the USB for a fast charging dual USB. I kept the 12v.

My only regret is that i didn't get the version with athevoltage indicator, I have solar panels so not concerned about battery drain, but it would be nice to keep a check on voltage for the engine battery, the house battery has many voltage indicators so no worries back there..

Looking to do the same. Did you have to change any wiring or just clip and re attach? The single usb is smaller wiring

IMHO it would be better to keep at least one cigarette lighter socket for the use of things like a 12v air compressor to inflate your tyres. I kept both and bought a USB fast charge adaptors which fit into the 12v sockets for charging USB devices. Informative on how to switch them out though.

I have an issue with my radio cutting out when using the cigarette lighter to charge items, so this looks like a good fix for that, do you get any radio problems, when using the USB from the same wires for the cig charger ??

Why removing a usefull car socket 12v output when you can just plug in a Qualcomm QC 3.0A dual usb. Just plug in. Making your life harder is really non sense. Plug in sockets are worth to have. Because you can read your car voltage input. To the usb. 12.6v 13.6v 14.4v 14.7. And some high voltage vehicles 24v. You always need your car socket to plug in different socket. Stop being useless.
