My wife and I both grew up in families that caravanned. However we did a motorhome trip to NZ 12 years ago and fell in love with Motorhoming. We have hired 5 different ones since then. We love that we can pull over whenever we want and have a cuppa, just walking through to the back, especially in wet cold weather. Much easier to drive, more economical, no swaying or weight distribution issues, shorter overall length when parking, no complicated articulated vehicle. Being organised when you go through a town and get your supplies is not that hard or a problem. Security and the option of driving off if in danger, no complicated hitching and unhitching are just few pluses. Just pull up, grab the camp chairs and grab a beer or a cuppa. As far as having to pack up when you move, it's not that hard especially if you are organised. Keep things tidy and all you need to to is put the salt and pepper away, close the vents retract the step and you are off. We are looking at purchasing our own and we have already travelled through NSW, Victoria, SA, Tassie and NT. Looking forward to doing the rest in our own motorhome as well as lots of weekend trips with our grand kids. My wife drives as well, but I would have a hard job convincing her to drive a tow vehicle and van. Each to his own, but we love motorhoming.

As a solo traveler I have a Fiat Ducato 7.2mt motorhome and I have a light weight trailer on the back with a mid size adventure motorcycle onboard as well as the jet-ski with a full canvas cover and a kayak perched on top of the ladder bars of the trailer. When I set up the bike is my get about vehicle. All put together, for me it spells FREEDOM :-)

Something to consider is if you arrive at your chosen destination, set everything up & realise that you need to go to the shops. This is where towing a van has an advantage.

I feel modern motorhomes and campervans, people don't put a lot of thought into storage of items so they don't rattle around, make noise, fall off etc, which created that annoying DIN. I fitted out my own campervan and I insulated and foam filled all internal panels and cavities which might vibrate and make noise. With all the insulation and anti-clatter holders and cupboards I don't get any of those noise issues.

Great episode and you're so right in saying you'll never get it perfect and to just make a start. Like many we didn't know how to start and reluctant to tow, bought a 30 year old motorhome. Had lots of fun for a couple of years, now caravanning. The main thing is just to get out there and do it. Look forward to seeing you each week.

Excellent episode. We’ve been following Trip in a Van for a while and whilst they show us some amazing places and they’re such a great family, we won’t be able to visit some of the places they go as we don’t have a 4WD but we recently came across your channel and absolutely LOVING all the episodes, what you guys do is a little more in line with how we will be travelling next year as we will be mostly staying at parks and not off the beaten track so to speak. We really enjoy following your journey and can’t wait to start ours. You’re giving us some great tips and info, so informative. Thank you! You’re such a lovely family! Thanks very much for the excellent comparison between vans & motorhomes. I've had quite a few vans over the years & had nothing but wonderful experiences & particularly enjoyed watching & listening to obviously real people & a lovely, very much in love couple, give your honest, very informed opinions in such a laid back, Aussie way that I can really relate to. I'm now 66 & we're leaning towards a motorhome, possible about 6 metres & like the Horizons so far but are still considering. Thanks again.

I'm looking at getting my first RV, so this video was quite helpful. I definitely will do as you suggest and try both before I commit to buy. Realistically however, the price of motor-homes might be the deciding factor for me. At the moment, I'm leaning towards a lightweight composite construction caravan fitted with an electronic sway control system for safer towing and a hydraulic automatic levelling system for quick set up and pack up. My hope is that it would give most of the benefits of a motor-home while being much easier on the wallet.

We are buying our second Caravan, lots more room than a Motorhome and when staying for a few days (or weeks) somewhere you still have a comfortable and safe vehicle to go touring in, but horses for courses as they say. Our friends have had 2 large Motorhomes with tow behind Suzuki's which require more work to hitch up and safely secure, also there is the extra maintenance costs involved, they are now the proud owners of a new Caravan with a Land-cruiser and have no regrets..

I agree with try before buying. We hired small caravan for a week before buying small used one. Work colleague hired a motorhome and enjoyed it but discovered a few things they disliked that would address when purchasing. Also try beds out if you are tall especially with campervan as they are narrower than motorhomes.

I really enjoy your videos for fresh ideas. I prefer towing a caravan because I believe it is a lot more versatile than a Motor Home for most of the reasons that you mentioned in this clip. However, I watch many Australian videos and what surprises me is that I have not seen any caravans fitted with automatic movers. Many Caravaners in South Africa have them fitted, so, when you arrive on site you simply unhitch, then move your caravan by remote connected via your 12v Battery system to the exact position that you want and you don't need assistance from your wife or partner. I have a particularly difficult area on a steep incline to park my van at home and it would make life extremely difficult and stressful if I didn't have automatic movers. Cheers - Terry.

So in effect the caravan is towing the car.What’s the difference to having a car tow the van.I can’t see the logic in having a camper van and towing a car behind it.It’s no different to a car towing a van in my opinion.Plus you have two engines and running gear to maintain.

G'day from America. Awesome video. I'd buy a motorhome if I had someone to share the experience and responsibilities that come with owning an RV. I'd want something large enough for two adults to live in comfortably while they travel the country, but it's also small enough that you could park where much larger motorhomes wouldn't be allowed to park due to their sheer size. I would also want something that's durable enough that you could drive a gravel road with pot holes without feeling like your rig is going to fall apart before you hit the pavement again.

The main reason my wife and I didn't go for a motorhome is we can use my BT50 for everyday living and, as you pointed out, it is easier to go sight seeing or do errands when on the road than having to pull up stumps with a massive motorhome. One thing you didn't mention and I don't know the answer is: what class of driver's licence is required for a full sized motorhome?
@TheFeelGoodFamily
@TheFeelGoodFamily 3 жыл бұрын
Great question - I think it depends on size - this Motorhome was a normal car license and I believe you need a light rigid for bigger/bus type rigs!

When you were talking about security in the van do you place wheel clamps on your van when having to leave van to see the sights in the 4wd. Any other thoughts of deterring someone stealing your van would be appreciated.
@TheFeelGoodFamily
@TheFeelGoodFamily 11 ай бұрын
Hi Peter, when we started out we would put a motor bike chain around our van Tyre when we went to NP’s or sightseeing for the day. We realise now that this is overkill. Maybe if you are leaving your van for weeks at a time and then wheel clamps would be a good idea! Look, it probably has happened that someone has their van stolen while away for the day but in 4 years of travel we have never heard of that happening 👍😅 one security system that we have in our zone and gets a great wrap online is witi- Google it and you will see the benefits this system offers including immobilising the vans wheels from rolling and gps tracking in the event of attempted theft! And it’s a low cost insurance and peace of mind! 🙏💙🇦🇺 all the best and safe travels

Good video. Very helpful. I am considering Campervan VS Camper Trailer. Wanted to ask. With many campervans being European brands (Renault, Fiat etc) do you think this is an issue? Obviously it would be easier to get parts for a ranger in the event of a breakdown due to more Ford dealers. I would be worried about getting parts easily with the European brands. I am also worried these brands are less reliable.
@TheFeelGoodFamily
@TheFeelGoodFamily Жыл бұрын
Hi Greg, we see so many of both styles on the road and haven’t seen or heard of any major vehicle/mechanical issues from other travelers. It would be a great idea to look on Facebook for groups specific to each vehicle you want to consider and then you can read the threads of users already on the road and potentially ask them Questions to get some genuine feedback on each 👍😊 all the best in your decision and safe travels!

I have ordered a 7m long Mercedes Benz Sprinter campervan. Its the LWB High Top version of the vans used extensively by Ambulance services, Police and delevery firms. So with that popularity I believe it will be reasonably reliable. Hopefuly my assessment is correct. Others may comment on that issue.

Aconsidertion some motorhome users dont take is the fact that they only have one vehicle which limits them from setting up camp and going into town or whatnot. the other side of the coin is, smart motorhome users always tow a small car around with them for that very purpose.

Do you think it would be better to rent rather than buy either a caravan or motorhome?

Motorhomes - so noisy driving at highway speeds and they have so little power. I got a bit car sick sitting in the back of a motorhome, on the seat facing the rear, back to back against the driver's seating position. Advantages: Lots of storage, especially in the rear, and the additional bed above the driver's cab is awesome for when more than 2 people are travelling. Caravans - can develop the speed wobbles if not loaded correctly, can be a bit scary when buffeted by the wind wake when overtaking a big truck. Much more cramped for kids in the caravan's bunkbeds. Can't go under a lot of low bridges. Would be great to have both options, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd pick the caravan as my mode of travelling.

That is a great suggestion.... now we just need a 5th wheeler! Hopefully we will get to try a few different vehicles over the coming year(s)! Have you/do you tow one? Cheers Paul

Insurance is no dearer in a Motorhome because with a car and caravan you are paying for 2 Insurances which can cost more than the Motorhome ...

Yes you can unhitch the caravan and use the car but most decent motorhomes they tow a car so what’s the difference. Just saying 😊

You never mentioned resale value between motorhomes/caravans. You will find you get a lot more back on a motorhome than a caravan.

Can’t believe the drivers seat doesn’t have an armrest!! This was a deal breaker for me!! The Iveco comes with armrests standard, so they down grad the seats for a 100k + Motorhome!! I went with Mercedes!! Much much much better comfort and infotainment system!! I really liked the iveco but is feels like your in the lowest povo pack model
