Peugeot South Africa chose the Western Cape for the launch of the facelift of their medium SUV, the 3008. The superb windless day simply added to the event. Our drive route took us around the entire Peninsula along superb roads with even better scenery.
But, it's meant to be all about the car. The shape stays the same with some subtle exterior changes like the enlarged grille with accents that extend into the bodywork on the sides. New slimline headlights with Matrix LCD units on the GT that include turning and dimming technology. Below are the unique sabre tooth daytime running lights.
At the rear, the lion's claw rear lights now include the turning indicators as well. GT models also feature 19 inch alloy wheels and a black diamond roof.
The big changes feature on the interior and technology. Exclusive to the GT model are Nappa leather interior in either black or red, wireless smartphone charging, 10 inch touchscreen with everything including 3D navigation and a premium Focal HiFi audio system. Technology features include Adaptive cruise control, advanced emergency braking with night functioning radar detection, Visiopark 360deg vision camera and seat massaging for the driver.
Add in features like forward collision warning, blind spot detection, keyless entry, electric hands-free tailgate and heated front seats that feature on the Allure model as well.
All models are powered by the familiar 1.6L turbopetrol engine that delivers 121kW an 240Nm to the front wheels through a conventional 6 speed automatic gearbox that is smooth and almost undetectable on the move. Overtaking response is excellent too as I experienced numerous time during the drive.
Overall ride and handling proved their ability when tackling Ou Kaapse Weg as well as Chapmans Peak.
Once again, I have to single out the little Peugeot steering wheel which feels great in your hands and adds to the feeling of responsive handling but still seems to block the drivers view of some of the instrument panel, no matter how you position seat and wheel.
From a very personal point of view, I would specify the black Nappa leather instead of the optional red as featured on the launch cars.
The 3008 range is priced at R514 900 for the Active, R574 900 for the Allure and R644 900 for the GT. A 5 year/ 100 000km service plan is standard.
