People who spend most of their car time alone or with just a front co-passenger are buying Cretas or Harriers. People with 7 lakh car budgets are buying base Punchs just because it tall and high. It goes on. Bollywood/South movies are also the culprit. SUVs especially black are projected as having gangsta or strong persona vibes and there's a hidden urge in everyone of us, teenager or bald office uncles alike, to be macho. Jeremy Clarkson summed up this problem very accurately when he was reviewing the BMW X6 in his summary: "It is a big car, but it cannot fit more people or luggage than an equivalent sedan could do. While the X6 has sporty driving dynamics to prevent body roll, they had to fill the suspension with so much gravel and concrete that the ride is atrocious. While the engine is powerful enough to haul the X6 at high speeds, it would have been much faster and more efficient if it were put in a smaller and less heavy sedan. Unlike the Range Rover which can do well off road, this car doesn't have any low range or locking diffs, which means that it is useless offroad." The same thing was shown in another episode of "The Grand Tour", when the three presenters went to Canada to road test such "Crossover SUVs". On a racetrack, a sedan with comparable power-to-weight ratio left all three for dead (because it had zero body roll, while these three had to considerably brake ahead of time to avoid body roll), while costing less than these three SUV's. And when they tried to do some offroad work in the dust, their 4x4 systems panicked and went into limp-home mode, nullifying their point as an off-roader. In summary, a Jacked up hatchback (the so called crossover SUVs) give the worst of both worlds. The big and bulky body adds unnecessary weight, which means that performance and fuel economy is much worse than a hatch/sedan on the same platform, the tall suspension raises the center of gravity of the vehicle, so to prevent body roll, the suspension is much stiffer, which ruins the ride comfort. To add to all this, the high riding body of an SUV is much more lethal to pedestrians as it focuses the impact on the chest or torso during a collision, rather than the legs (in the case of hatches/sedans). In fact, European law forbids lifting the bodywork of an SUV over a particular limit specifically to abide with the pedestrian collision regulations. Also, for the naysayers saying that "bad roads need such large jacked up hatches", the ground clearance on modern mass market sedans and hatchbacks is around 170mm, which is more than sufficient on most on the roads of the nation. If your Swift car with 170 mm ground clearance is grounding on a speed hump/pothole, then it is not the car which is at fault, it is the road contractor/builder who should be pulled up.

Due to length being more, the taxes on them are somewhat similar to SUVs. So, when all of this is seen buy a buyer, they just think, isse achha to SUV le lete hai. SUVs generally have a wider stance, the width is higher for same length of sedan or hatchback, it is desirable. High GC to handle broken roads/city, municipal roads. Upright bonnet, more metal upfront for safety in case of mishap. This trend in evident in crash results. In our country, these are genuine concerns.

I think someone unleashed the paid mafia online all of sudden all the reviewers are promoting Sedans which is an outdated segment in India. For indians owning a car is a dream, we will buy the most value for money option. Why would some one buy shot vernas, taiguns or kushaqs for 20 lakhs when we can get much feature rich scorpios and 700 at same price. Moreover, the seevice of the SUVs is cheaper than sedans 😊

Another reason is Nitin Gadkari ji, he has built so many amazing interstate highways. So people now consider travelling between states via car as a real possibility. Hence, it makes more sense to buy SUV now.

Bhai SUVs are opposite of what you described. It's like saying ab 2 ki jagah 4 log ek saath jaenge so now let's go via motorcycle instead of car. The SUVs are made for offroading. The better long roads mei Sedans are better than SUVs because they are closer to the road which makes more stabilty as centre of mass is lower, sedans perform better in moose test so ekdum se saamne koi aae tho high speed mein instantly lane switch karte waqt car turbulent naa ho and sedans have better aerodynamics and are lighter means zyada speed mei kam fuel consumption compared to SUVs.

Please make a video on compact suv vs midsize suv, because their price clash and it becomes very confusing to choose between the, after considering pros and cons. Like if I have a budget of 13-14 lakh on road, I can get a middle variant of compact SUVs and base model of midsize SUVs with all the basic features. It’s so confusing for middle class people like us to choose because both are lucrative options here…

For an economy that is growing like ours, it is sad that road conditions in the city and towns, where the volume of traffic is very high, is getting worse day by day. It's admirable that we have massive expressways and highways are getting better. This is great for long haul vehicles and interstate and cross country travel. However, I wish the government would provide states more funds and support them in getting city/town roads in better shape.

Great observation. But you are missing the macro picture. Generation alfa is going to ditch car ownership completely. They will be considering vehicles and aerial vehicles as a mode of transportation only. Just like around a hundred year back, people considered horse drawn carriages as mode of going from A to B prior to the advent of internal combustion engine.
@hsbsbj10495 ай бұрын
In 90s and 2000s people used to buy a lot of sedans and we used to see a lot in our neighborhood Roads were far worse back then than what they are today If you're telling me that bad roads are the major reason behind people purchasing SUVs (basically bumped up hatchbacks), then sorry I'm not convinced. You're telling me that roads haven't improved in last 30 years. Its not the roads, its the clever marketing of the automobile companies to manipulate people onto buy whatever they sell. It could be a raised hatchback disguised as a fake SUV.
