I have the Motorola Defy. In the 4 months I've had it I've tested it a few times and it works fine. I bought mine mostly for emergency use (plus, the price was right). My only real practical complaint about it is the mandatory use of the Bullitt app in order to send/receive text messages. If you text a contact you does not have the Bullitt app, it will ask that person to install the app. But, these days, unless you know the person really well and they know you have this unit, I cannot imagine a person would so freely download an app and install it on their phone. That sounds very "spammy" to me. Ideally, you could text back & forth using your regular texting method. Other than that problem, I think it is a good unit for the price.

Lol Ive had the Motorola Bullitt Defy for 8 months or so I use it on my hiking channel... This thing literally works every OTHER day. Used to be hit or miss. Some places it worked. Some it didnt. But recently I did an overnight at Deception Creek in WA. Wouldn't connect on Wednesday no matter what I did. Stayed connected all day Thursday though. Had an entire conversation on the trail. Same exact places I was at Wednesday. Like they don't have enough satellites up there and they move them around? Cannot understand why this thing is so hot and cold.

I bought one and find if I allow it to use my location at all times as it suggests (otherwise it will not allow the SOS feature to work) it drains my phone fast about 4 to 5 percent an hour. I have it in airplane mode as well. So it is not searching for wifi or cell towers. Having to recharge a phone everyday in the backcountry is a bit much.

Unfortunately your video didn’t attempt to address the actual performance of the Defy unit other than to tell us it connected. That it connected while in a treed area is good, but….. I’ve purchased a Defy unit and so far have been unable to connect to any satellites, even in an open field on a clear day. Tech support “will research the issue” and get back. At this point it’s looking dim.

Absolutely no reason to require the receiving end to download any app to receive a text message. What BS! The client has already paid for a service - provide it.

Defy only works in North America. A Garmin Inreach is a far better option

I bought motorola's modular phone. They advertised heavily that it will be modular phone with lot many attachments. Immediately after clearing the stock they discontinued the model. I felt cheated and was left out with the expensive brick with no attachments to use. Since then I don't trust Motorola's innovations.

"The Future" literally does worse and works in less places than multiple alternative devices available for a decade. You can't just reply to an email or sms like the Garmin. This thing is garbage.

I wouldn’t say it’s garbage. The Defy/Bullitt solution seems faster at message exchanges compared to my Garmin inReach. However, Bullitt needs to fix iOS notifications and stop auto-logoff feature so recipients know when new messages arrive.
