Motorola SBG6580 cable modem, router, and access point

I rent the modem so that when I break it and I have purposely, I don't have to pay anything! When there's a latest modem model and I want to upgrade I simply just break the modem. It works! lol

+noone guess that is one way to do it but I know with time warner they don't upgrade their equipment every year and I begin saving money on the rental shortly after one year. But for some people who aren't as tech savvy I have recommended leasing the equipment so they did have the support if something went wrong with the equipment.

I know this is an older vid, but just thought I'd point this out as many remain available for sale (although the newer models aren't that much more expensive and offer significant benefits). At about 06.35 you state the "two blue things" are for "things plugged into the back". That is at best confusing, at worst not accurate. Those two LEDs indicate the Downstream and Upstream connectivity to the ISP. The first "blue" LED is downstream connectivity to the ISP...the LED below that is for upstream connectivity to the ISP, regardless of whether anything is plugged into the RJ45 ethernet sockets. From the User Manual "Locked onto either single (green) or multiple bonded (blue) channel" This is an 8x4 bonded channel modem (8 downstream and 4 upstream). When bonded connections are used the modem is MUCH faster. If you don't see solid blue on those two LEDs, then you're not getting all you can get out this model. Note: your ISP connection package may or may not support channel bonding or other features that limit connection speed.

Ola Pinme, with the cable modems you most likely need to contact your service provider to have them allow the device and give it access to their network.

It sounds like something isn't hooked up right or not configured correctly. If you are using this as an extender how to you have it hooked into your existing network?

. That is compatible with Time Warner. But now they call themselves Spectrum. All you have to do is just plug it in the wall put the cable wire and where it belongs and press the reset button. And give the internet company your Mac number and you're good to go

Michelle, I suspect they didn't do much more than add your mac address when they were time warner. Might have been a few more settings but I didn't see anything unusual when I logged into the router and checked. Thanks for the info. When spectrum took over I didn't have to make any changes.

+Mindful Music yes I am still using the modem. The verdict is still out on how satisfied I am with the modem. It shows good download and upload speeds but still the Internet is a bit laggy. I have also found the need to reset the modem periodically by unplugging it and plugging it back in. Not sure if this is a modem issue or a time warner issue. If I leave it open with no encryption key then I have no issues with outages. Since that is not an option I have been dealing with resetting the modem when it seems to hang. Doesn't happen a lot but enough to be irritating. It is still better than paying the leasing fee but if it turns out to be this modem and not time warner then I might have to try another model on their compatible modem's list.

Great question and I have unfortunately been experiencing some drops on the connection. If I run the guest network with no security key leaving it open then I don't have any drops but when I keep the guest disabled and use the encryption key I have been experiencing some drops in the connection. Haven't isolated if this is the modem or a time warner configuration but will update my review once I isolate the issue. I appreciate your feedback and it is good to know others have run into similar issues.

Hey thanks for replying! ive been doing some investigating and it looks like our firmware might me out of date, so the current firmware for this modem is SBG6580-6.5.2.0-GA-06-077-NOSH, make sure yours matches up with that (type in how to check your modems firmware into google if you dont know) and depending on which provider you have (mine is Cox) you have to call them and ask them if you need to update the firmware. For other modems it takes like 10mins to update it, but its different with this one for some reason.

Hi thanks for the video. My wife and I only have laptops @ 7:01 you have 2 cables from the Arris to the computer. How do we connect the cables? We have a mini cable box in each room, I currently have a Arris Surfboard SB6141 modem that's connected to a Linksys router. will be working from home next week with the ThinkCentre Tiny hard drive.

I have one ethernet cable that went to a desktop computer and the other ethernet cable went to a printer. Below those is a coax cable that comes directly from the cable company that supplies the internet and below it the power cable. With your laptops you won't need the ethernet cables and will connect to the box with the wifi. If you have multiple items (TVs, DVRs) hooked to the cable you will need a splitter maybe a powered splitter to reduce signal loss. Let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching and commenting!

+VThePR there were a couple of urls in the video, the first was the list for the compatible modems. This could be different depending on who you have service with. For road runner here is the url with the list of recommended or compatible modems.www.timewarnercable.com/content/dam/residential/pdfs/support/internet/twc-compatible-modems.pdfThe other url I used was the one when I was configuring the modem. This is actually the default IP address of your modem which can be different for different modems. It will be listed in the instructions you get with your modem. On my particular model it was 192.168.0.1 but this may be different for you. If you don't see it in your documentation you can google the default IP address setting for your particular model and you should find it that way. Let me know if there was anything else. Oly6t1 if you mean use it to create a vpn I don't think so but I will take a look at the settings and see what I can find out for you. I connect vpns through it since it provides my internet connection but I don't think that is what you are wanting.

We have the same one. Im not an electrician but I thought even if you switch outlet in another room with all room switches turned on the modem would be working again, but when I switched room the blue light didn't turn on so I took it back to the room it originally was in and it worked again. Is it just me or has anyone experienced this?

DLIX2DCLI it may depend on the way your cable wires are run in your home. The cable modem pretty much requires a direct line from the initial splitter. If they are daisy chained from one room to the next it could create some signal loss with the additional splitters. I have a main line coming in from the cable company to a splitter they provided that feeds all the rooms. Periodically the cable company has upgraded ends and even wire to better equipment to improve signal.

Do your pictures on the lights have different symbols? My top light is a green power light and then I have two steady blue lights then a steady green internet light and then an green wifi light with activity. I sometimes get a flashing blue light when the signal is cut off by my service provider. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Sidjey Dimaano, do you mean the www.arris.com website? or the web interface to log into your motorola modem? If your logging into the modem web interface then that is the correct default user name and password but if it has been changed then you would need the new password. If you do not have the password you can reset the modem using a paper clip and pressing the reset button for about 10 seconds. This will change all your settings back to default and you will need to reconfigure it to get it working again. If you are not sure of the settings you need you might want to contact your service provider for them. You might look on the modem itself. Sometimes there is a security code that is used. Keep us updated on how it goes.

@@christomacc thanks for the reminder, I took a look and it doesn't look like you can set up one network for 2.4 and another for 5. You can select which you want but it appears it is either one or the other for both the guest and the primary network. In the basic wireless settings is where you make your selection which seems to be for both networks.

I would check with your service provider. that is way below what you are paying for. while your speeds might vary only having 8 down when paying for 100 there is something wrong. I doubt it is related to the cable modem the speeds on it are much higher and is capable of those speeds.

On the back there should be a small hole that you can insert the end of a paper clip into to reset the modem to defaults. You will need to press and hold the reset button about 10 seconds for it to reset.

Im currently using a motorola 6121 surfboard modem and netgear 1750 router. I picked up a 6580 SBG surfboard modem/router all in one for $10. is it worth testing out to see if in home wifi improves? i feel like it may be waste of time.

Normally I would have said yes it would be worth a try but with the issues I have had with the 6580 I would probably now go with a different solution. Having everything in one box is a lot cleaner looking and easier managing but this particular model has dropped internet connections making resetting the device a common occurrence. That said if I was renting the 6121 then I would replace it with one I owned even the 6580 if I didn't have another choice.

Who are you using for your service provider? If I am understanding you right you have an existing modem from your cable company or phone company that you are trying to hook this router up to using an Ethernet cable? Is that correct? That said if you have it configured correctly you should still at least see a WIFI being broadcast unless you have told it not to broadcast the SSID. Do you have the wireless network enabled? You should see a main wireless network and a guest wireless network that you can enable.

Not sure if you will be able to use it like you want. The cable modem doesn't have a WAN Ethernet port since it is expecting the internet source to come through on the BNC. Looking at the settings on mine I suspect I might be able to get it to work by changing the IP of the modem to a static IP in the range of your metrocast DHCP. You would probably want to assign it one of the last IP numbers (xxx.xxx.xxx.254). Then configure the WIFI. Haven't tried this but might be worth a shot. Other wireless routers like the cisco Linksys router in the video have a WAN port you plug into your metrocast router. Let me know if you get it working.

Open up a firefox browser and type in the default ip 192.168.0.1. At the login page the default user name is "admin" and the default password is "motorola".

The higher up you can place your modem the better your range will be. I haven't had any issue with ours in that regard but I have had it drop the connection which seems to have gotten worse. I plan on trying the firmware update and see it that resolves the problem. I haven't done it yet since I am usually in a hurry and it is just a lot quicker to reset the modem.

Matthew, Noneya, I haven't got around to downloading and applying the firmware update but for some reason I haven't been having as much problem with it now like I was before. It can be a week before I reset so I haven't been as pressed to try the update.

I want to make sure it's able to perform as well as the one I have for the whole family.

C'mon...it's a GREAT combo modem/router especially for the money spent. I bought a brand new one off Ebay for less than $40 and I couldn't be happier...
