I've launched and retrieved from that ramp hundreds of times mostly at night. It's great to watch these videos at your own local ramps. One thing most of these guys don't understand is you can repeatedly put the boat in gear then back to neutral on your approach to slowly bump the boat forward it makes it way easier to line up on the trailer and make small corrections.

Great commentary! Hopefully each of these captains learn from every launch, excursion, dock and haul. We're all been there. Best advice I've ever gotten was, "Never approach anything faster than you would want to hit it with your vessel." This applies from my 570 Caver, to my 11' Amanzi RIB. Stay safe and get PFDs on those kiddos and puppers!

My son is 7 has been going to swim lessons since he was 1 so he knows how to swim. When we say we are going to the lake he puts on his life jacket before we leave the house and doesn't take it off until we get back home. The lake is 40 min away but he just enjoys putting it on for some reason.

Last year I was in Harbor XYZ and the Harbor Master noted three kids onboard a boat didn't have their life jackets on....the harbor master demanded the captain to kill his engine as attempted to leave the dock. The captain rebuffed at first, saying they were just getting underway, the harbor Master corrected him and then gave a $1,000 fine per child.....The other thing I want to note is center console boats with high seating, may seem cool but pose a fall hazard for younger children when broadsided by waves or wakes from other boats....a family boat should keep family members seated below the gunrail....

It does take a few minutes of 100% attention, then you are done and on your way. I think too many people give it about as much attention as their car or truck but the added dimensions of water current &/or wind change everything…. I live in windy country so the funny ones are those still trying to load their boats (pontoons mostly) with their Bimini still open. It’s amazing how that changes everything in a 15- 20 mph wind!! Where I learnt to be a skipper none will be issued a skipper license if they don't succeed in proper balancing on crossing bars in and out and in docking a boat in choppy water both port and starboard + a simulated rescue man overboard with a full size human dummy. I grew up on a Major Inland Salt Waterway. We boated. One of our Hard and Fast Rules was: EVERYONE WEARS A VEST. Why? Because we almost lost an uncle who got thrown out of the boat when it hit another boat's wake at too high of a speed. He smacked his head on the Gunwale on his way out, and was knocked unconscious. We managed to retrieve him before he drowned. That was the instant The Rule was born. I don't care how well you think you can swim. WEAR A VEST. Because even if you CAN swim, and are still conscious, the Puget Sound is COLD.

If you have a under powered pontoon boat with 16 grown people on it and no one ☝️ I mean no one trying to grab the dock and throw a line on it. It gets tuff for cappy. Let’s leave the boat handling at the dock aside for a moment, and talk about backing up your trailers at the ramp for a moment, shall we?!? When I taught my sons how to back up a trailer, they learned that it’s NOT a skill you learn at the fucking ramp!!! I set up an “S-Curve” course, and if they could back it up without crushing a cone, I bought them BOTH a breakfast at the diner of their choice. If EITHER of them squashed a cone, they had to buy ME a meal at the diner of my choice. It was a friendly competition, and my sons can thread the needle with a trailer like a thing of beauty. After that, I taught them “Ramp Courtesy “. After that, how to handle the dock(s) in different conditions. If you’re an experienced Captain, please share your knowledge with the rookies. It makes life better for all of us. ❤️😎
