Part 5 of Ultimate Adventure 2017. Day Seven began with some parking lot repairs in Hurricane, Utah, before the group made the short drive from town to Sand Hollow OHV for some technical rockcrawling and high-speed sand dune action. San Hollow is a completely open off-road play area with incredible sandstone obstacles. We slid in behind our local trail leaders, Rich Klein and Woody Swearingen, locked the hubs, and were climbing crazy-cool obstacles within 100 feet. With tacky sandstone providing insane traction, impossible lines are possible. As the Ultimate Adventure group made its way through the twisting, ledge-filled, off-camber terrain we eventually got to the last rockcrawling obstacle of the day called The Chute, a 150-foot-tall nearly-vertical wall that everybody needed to climb to get to the dunes. Take the right line and there’s no problem, but if you fall off the line your reward will be a tumbling roll straight to the bottom. Some had no problem, some had to back down and fiddled around a bit for the right line, but all the UA participants eventually made it up to the reward of Sand Hollow’s dune area. Once again, horsepower reigned supreme here and those with the most put on the best show, railing corners and going airborne for the cameras.

These guys are always talking about how one terrain favors a long wheel base and some terrain favors a short, Fred's tube sock was so short wanted to flip on that one hill, I think the rock crawler guy's have every other mod, who's gonna build a rock crawler that can convert on the fly from short to long wheel base with a telescoping frame, you'll have a rig that suits all terrain.

I really like these episodes from the narration to the interviews with the drivers, it entertaining to watch. One serious question. When your out in the middle of nowhere 30,50,80 miles off the beatin path and have catastrophic problem that makes the vehicle immobile on its own power (transmission goes out, transfer case shells, broken diff., or other major component failure) how do you go about getting it down and out of the mountains and canyons to a place where a tow truck can pick it up or tow it to a shop or put on a trailer. Also are these rigs trailered in to go wheeling or are they driven to the place?
@waynelambert9230
@waynelambert9230 6 жыл бұрын
No trailers allowed once UA starts. All the rigs are driven everywhere for the week. On UA 2017 the group covered over 900mi. Over 700 of those miles were on dirt. I don't own a car trailer, so on top of that I drove the truck from LA to Phoenix for the start. And then from Hurricane, UT to LA at the end. Total was about 1800mi over 9 days.

John D, Tow strap and a little help from your friends. Pull the broken pieces off if needed. Sometimes a piece of chain or a ratchet strap is used to bind broken axles, springs etc. If the trail is too tough to tow, winch it through those spots. It's all about team work and a can do attitude.

By far the most boring UA yet. just boring dirt roads and some rock crawling. I love rock crawling and watching it. watching this makes me miss the mud. they focused on the builds more then the actual trip. I hope next year is better. throw a normal build in the mix and watch them beat it off rocks, not these super built buggies and one ton jeeps that make everything look easy.
