I still have my made in Brazil 2003 GTI VR6 (MKIV, 24v engine)) after now going on 21 years! I bought it new in October 2002 for about 25K, and it has been my daily driver ever since. What an AMAZING car in so many respects! It has been more reliable than any Subaru, Honda or Toyota my family has ever owned (and we've had many over the years), and the fit and finish is akin to an Audi or BMW of that era. Leather, 6-speed manual, and 0-60 in 6.5 seconds... so much fun and satisfying to drive! I've had other VW's that were not nearly as reliable (older GTI's and Golfs), so I must conclude that my 24v VR6 is easily one of the best engines VW has ever made! I just change the oil (full synthetic) every 5000 to 7000 miles (or once a year, whichever comes first), and feed it with Shell V-Power Premium Unleaded. And yes, most of the time it's been garaged, especially in the cold winter and hot summer months. I honestly can say that I won't be too surprised if it lasts me another 10 years or more! Even if I spend 50 or 75K on a new car today, I would bet my life on the fact that there is no way I could find a car as reliable or well made as my '03 GTI VR6! VW totally hit a home run with this one!

How do the Germans get so little power from a V6???

Vr6 GLX owner here. Answer to this question is simple: restrictive intake, very restrictive 2 inch exhaust, and factory tune. I get about 34 mpg on the highway and about 30 combined on 93. For a heavy boxy car its pretty damn good on gas. With a simple ecu flash you can get an extra 40 horsepower, and about 50 more lb ft. Weakest point of the car is the oem clutch though which probably limited VWs ability to bump up the power without re-engineering the 5 speed manual. Probably why the r32 got an all new 6 speed.

I have the European version of this: the V6 4Motion. It is the same engine as the MkIV R32, with the 24v head, but less capacity and a different air intake. It shares the same drive train (gearbox and Haldex 4WD system, except a different controller for the HaldexI on the 4Motion), plus it shares the same rear brakes. It delivers 201 bhp, which for a car introduced in 1999, isn't terrible. Plus, mine has a Revo Stage 1 tune taking it up to 216 bhp. This means a GPS lap timer confirmed run of 14.6 for 1/4 mile and 6.5 seconds to 60mph. My favourite stat however is the 16.7 seconds to 100 mph - that's comparable to GTI's of recent times. Oh yeah: it's also got 206,000 miles on the clock and returns a combined MPG of over 28mpg. Stick a turbo in it and you'll get 400 bhp easily, without having to change the clutch... Solid.

Lol u must not know a lot about the VR6, can easily tell by how u even though it was a V6 lol. Little did u know its two of those engines mated together with 4 turbos that powers the Bugatti veyron lol that engine is definitely not underpowered. Hell mOST gm and ford of that era were making less horsepower with V8 engines than the gti
