Pat Goss is the best! Great voice too; been watching him since the '80's on PBS. Motorweek was the only car show on TV in NYC on channel 13 (no cable in those days!!!)...

when overheating - turn on heater full blast & keep revs down by keeping highest gear possible, then stop when safe, add coolant then get it towed to nearest repair shop.

Unless it's an old Subaru. Yellow check engine light is a tradition on those things.

That valve seat issue sounds like the 1.9/2.0 Ford CVH SEFI/SPI motors in the Escorts and Focuses, but it's not caused by overheating, just bad design.

I did that once in my 86 Trans-Am. My 74 Corolla overheated and knocked valves and nothing happened. My 86 Trans-Am read hot and I thought I could go another mile in it...uh uh. Died within 500 feet at a turn light and ruined the block. Had to buy a new engine. Those 305s back then were like 6k.

Oh day-um... back in 99 my 89 Tercel was heating up because of a cracked radiator. I stopped every few miles to add water into the overflow tank and made it home. Glad I didn’t keep driving like a dumb ass 😂 fixed the radiator and sold that sucker for $500 a few years later

2005jgkay The Cadillac Northstar V8. When it detects it's overheating, it goes into limp mode and shuts down half the cylinders. It even alternates between cylinder banks.

mx5hong most GMs go into limp mode.

It keeps the engine from revving past say 1,500 RPM. it can shut down cylinders, and prevents the transmission from shifting out of first. Also, the fans will be on full power and won't allow use of the AC . It is supposed to be able to get you off the side of the road safely so the car can cool down and it tries to prevent engine damage.

Jorge Rodriguez it's short for "limp home" mode. in addition to what's been listed, less-aggressive ignition timing and reduced boost on turbo engines are sometimes used.

@motorweek I have a 97 oasis Isuzu Minnie van. My engine over heated. It drove fine and I drove it for maybe 15 miles not consecutively though. I drive 2 miles then 8 hours later drove 5 miles then 8 hours later drove another 5 miles. What do you think the damage is?

How many engines still have only two valves per cylinder??
@AWDfreak9 жыл бұрын
AZDuffman Not a lot, but the majority of them in a passenger vehicle application are of the overhead valve, cam-in-block engines still used by American manufacturers. They may no longer be common, but for now, they're still sticking around.

If u are smart, u will cut it off before u get to the red. If u have a light, cut it off then. But people just drive until it stop.

My friend actually destroyed his $40(k) by ignoring his engine warning light. He also ignored his low oil warning and his overheat temperature setting for about 2 hours all on the same night... Pore Cito a mi hombre. He should have listened to technology, and more importantly, his gut. His car would be alive today. Long story short ladies and gentleman, do not ignore the lights on the dash of your car. Pull over now, and you will thank yourself later.

Check your oil once per week. You can't go wrong doing that, it takes a few seconds, do it when you get gas. If you have a leak you might need to check even more often. People go months without even checking.

When you say "the driver", you mean the woman right? Just a joke, I know some adult males( I call them adult males because a "real man" would know not to continue driving with an overheating warning) that would do the same thing.
