These SL's were everywhere in south florida and Miami in early 80's - absolutely "THE" car for the upper crust of society and a status symbol for most all celebrities of the time..

@@davidsherrick898 R107 was a more practical car for the young rich at the time, these had just as much curb appeal and were probably more reliable.

@@davidsherrick898the r107s were a really a target for yuppies in the 80s. The only convertible rolls had at that time was the archaic corniche and when you compare that car to the 560SL you’d see why the r107 was vastly popular. Even though the r107 had an equally old design even back then, it still looked very modern and fit in the 1980s for a car that was designed in the late 60s people forget the r107 was way ahead of its time in style when it came out in the early 70s. The rolls back then was honestly for old money and not a lot of young people with money flocked to the corniche

It's amazing how many of these R107s I still see cruising around four decades later (and usually still in fantastic cosmetic condition too). Same goes for W126 S-class of this era.

227 HP? Maybe because of emission regulations? We never got the 560SL in Germany, but the 5.6l delivered 279PS in the 126 S-Class.

even 300hp. us emissions is the reason. They have lower compression rate and lower cfm intake with just one channel.

The purpose of the 5.6L in the US version was to give the same performance as the 5.0L European version.

Leather is finally standard? Why wouldn't it be before? These were expensive, world class cars.

Well I’m Europe leather wasn’t really seen as luxury and these cars had a combo of leather and plaid cloth going down the center.
