What's up DUDES.
Mott the Hoople week rolls on. What is a Mott? Or a Hoople? Don't ask us!
But you can ask us about our favorite Mott the Hoople songs. After fanboying out on their discography, we sit down to rank our top 10 favorite Hoople tracks from their seven studio albums, singles and whatever else.
Everybody knows All the Young Dudes and All the Way From Memphis, but there are dozens of other killer cuts that have seemingly been lost to the sands of terrestrial radio, like Roll Away the Stone, Golden Age of Rock and Roll, Foxy Foxy, Sucker, Sweet Angeline, Thunderbuck Ram, Momma's Little Jewel, Honaloochee Boogie, Alice, Your Own Backyard and many more.
I mean does anyone even remember the names of Mott the Hoople's seven studio albums? Brain Capers? That's gotta be made up.
Joe and Jason share a mind boggling five songs, while Kramzer goes off on his own with a very deep list.
To hear any of our selections, check out the Spotify playlist: open.spotify.c...
Thanks for watching, DUDES!

Here are my fave 22 Mott the Hoople songs in rank order at mo...ive taken up the habit of scoring songs to help order them...I ended up with 22 that scored 7.5 or better (30 were 7+ which is not bad) 22 Crash Street Kids 7.5 (TH) 21 Soft Ground (ATYD) 7.5 20 One of the Boys (ATYD) 7.5 19 Sucker (ATYD) 8 sounds like middle eastern moonage daydream in places 18 Ballad of Mott the Hoople (MTH) 8 17 When My Minds Gone (MS) 8 Smooth end to good album. 16 Hymn for the Dudes (MTH) 8. 15 Whizz Kid (mth) 8 is like listening to Suffragette City. No wonder Bowie liked them. His fingerprints are all over Mth. 14 Sweet Jane (ATYD) 8. 13 Roll Away the Stone 8.5 (TH) 12 Sea Diver 8.5 (ATYD) lovely ending song. Overblown orchestration works . 11 Threads of Iron (MS) 8.5'you are what you are'...great blues rock chorus👍 and lovely base/piano centre piece jiving. 10 All the Young Dudes (ATYD) 8.5 we know it's great but like above more. 9 I Wish I was your Mother (mth) 8.5 another Dylan styled number but v well done. 8 Darkness, Darkness, 9 (Brain C), great soul,blues,rock number that lifts the album. 7 Thunderbuck Ram (MS) 9 very deep purple. Great lead guitar drives it well. 6 "I'm A Cadillac / El Camino Dolo Roso" 9.5 (Mott) the instrumental raises this one up a notch. Lovely ending. 5 Waterlow (Wildlife) 10 folky brilliance just too short 4 Ready For Love/Afterlights 10 (ATYD) really reminds me of a GVF song (from 1st album) clear winner from album 3. Whiskey Women 10 (wildlife), lovely rolling base hook results in their best opener. Spellbinding. 2 Wrong Side of the River (Wildlife) 10 surely their best sounding ballad. Gorgeous 1 Angel of 8th Avenue (Wildlife) 10 love this....the piano low key puts me in mind of the also excellent Heavy Load by Free. But it's a beauty on a great record🏆 Final thoughts......I'd recommend Free 1st as the preeminent 1970 ish English rocknroll band out of the slightly less huge bands of the time. Whilst MTH albums are sometimes better production wise mostly, Free have for me a more original song craft and soul to their sound overall... MTH were more American country/folk influenced at first and I like their earlier more personal sound more than their ok Glam faze which for me was inferior to many other acts of the time. Free for me has the better debut ( their first 3 albums are all fab)...Free also had the bigger hit of course ...yet both bands are clearly overlooked and underated. MTH probable had a bit more consistency with album quality over their whole discography. But hey two talented and very young at the time rocknroll bands emerged in 1970 in Britain....both fab, both In many ways leaving a good legacy. Maybe it's their names and not the music...Mott just sounds a bit dweeby a name to catch the public's imagination at the time....

Three fun facts: 1. All the Way From Memphis - true story about Mick losing his guitar on their first tour of the US...was not a happy chap. 2. Mick Ralphs came up with that iconic intro for Dudes...I think David Bowie and Mick Ronson were like...how do we open and Ralpher said 'how about this'... 3.'Can't Get Enough' line from Wheels to Ride is where Mick got the title for 'Can't Get Enough of Your Love' which he played for Paul Rodgers and the germ of Bad Company was born. Mick recorded his demo of the song in his flat in Shepherd's Bush London, playing all the instruments and mixing it himself. (He hit a cushion with a tambourine underneath as the snare). Mick offered Ian a songwriting credit but Ian refused.

All of Mott's albums contained killer tracks and even if yesterday I rated none of their albums with 5 stars, the top 10 songs would get that rating if we gave stars to songs. I have returned to them countless times for pleasure over the last 50 years and they have not lost their impact to this day. 10. Roll Away the Stone 9. No Wheels to Ride 8. Walking With a Mountain (and at the moment the songs takes the turn into Jumping Jack Flash, Mick Jagger joins in...) 7. The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll 6. Darkness Darkness (Another cover, The Youngbloods this time...) 5. At the Crossroads (A Doug Sahm aka Sir Douglas cover, Mott did a lot of extraordinary covers where they took songs from remote genres and gave them a Mott treatment. However - other than Vanilla Fudge - they got into the very heart of those songs.) 4. The Moon Upstairs 3. Sweet Angeline (The Hunter/Ronson live version from Welcome to the Club is actually the definitive one...) 2. All the Way From Memphis 1. Thunderbuck Ram PS - I can only highly recommend the originals for my #5 and #6, both from 1969 LPs: Sir Douglas Quintet - Mendocino (Augie Meyers on keyboard, you will understand why Dylan recruited him later) and Youngbloods - Elephant Mountain. Both are absolute classic albums for more than the one reason that they contain these songs.

@@179rich I have seen people do that on RYM but I always think that an album is more than just the sum of the tracks, there is also flow/context etc. A very good song may still be completely out of place on an album while small interludes are essential - a good example is Jethro Tull's Aqualung, where even the "lesser" songs have a purpose to make it a masterwork.
@roxannewalsh
@roxannewalsh 3 жыл бұрын
@@179rich I will not talk about a 1972 trivial glam rock sing along that some people think was a masterwork - it really hurts when a band you are fond of finally gets successful for doing the most awful move...T. Rex had Children of the Revolution that year, not to forget each and every note on the Roxy Music's debut album, so plenty of alternatives to some Bowie leftover.

Never heard anything from Mott in my neck of the woods except all the young dudes which wasn't what I expected... My real introduction to the band was the rock and roll queen lp that I borrowed from my dear, departed nephew, which really blew me away! Death may be your Santa Claus is my theme song and keep a knocking is pure chaos, the way live rock and roll should be! Otherwise, shouting and pointing was a damn good album that I turned my nephew on to , which he really appreciated... I was so happy to return the favor. RIP Mike Brown, thanks for influencing my musical taste ❤️‍🔥🎸🎶🍻😎✌️

BTW, the story behind 'Wildlife' is that the band was having a problem replicating its killer live performances in the studio, so they decided to do a live album. The problem was that, on the night of the live recording, the audience invaded the stage - as it always did - but, in the process wrecked the recording equipment, and the closing medley was all that could be recovered. Island Records were always in two minds about Mott, so they didn't get a second chance at a live recording until their CBS days.

Kudos for mentioning 'Saturday Gigs' . Another one that rarely gets a mention, and can hardly be found anywhere is 'Black Hills'. It's on a compilation album 'Two Miles From Heaven' produced by Buffin. A dark acoustic number written and sung by Mick Ralphs. Kram I think you might like this one - I wish Mick sang more in this range, really suits his voice.

11:10 I’m impressed on the number of people on here who are so well versed on MtH discography. I had “heard of” the band, and once I started listening to some of the albums this week vaguely recognized only the two Dudes songs on Jason’s list, though I am familiar with the original “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” by Ian Hunter. To be fair, I was born in the mid-70s, and I’m not a 70s music aficionado per se…my decades are 80s-00s. My older siblings never played their music as far as I’m aware. But as a Listography fan, I am embarrassed to admit they passed me by, and I hang my head in shame. I am listening to their albums now, and like what I hear, even if I’m not necessarily blown away. Thanks for the recommendations.

I agree with the comment about ranking Ian Hunter albums. As a lifetime fan of Ian, I see Mott as an early phase in his writing. His 'Ian Hunter' album - his first solo album - is really powerful. 'All American Alien Boy' split the fans, but I think it was sensational. 'You're Never Alone With A Schizophrenic,' and then his long recent run of great album after great album. I'd start with 'The Artful Dodger' but many fans would start with the next one, 'Rant,' and then just one success after another. I haven't heard his new album yet, but his collaborators are almost a who's who of rock, from Slash, Joe Elliott, Jeff Beck, Jeff Tweets etc. Who knows what his best solo song is, but 'Michael Picasso' about the death of Mick Robson has to be a contender, then add at least another fifty.

Once they got their identity together from a rowdy live band to a studio album making act, and Hunter figured out how to write these Killer glam rock songs like "Memphis", "Roll away the Stone", "Honaloochie", "Golden Age", they were awesome. But my favorite MTH track is still "Walking with a Mountain". For no reason at all it always reminds me of U2's "Out of Control". Hi guys...You need to review Hunter's debut album, which I suppose would have been a Mott album if he hadn't left the band...(some of the songs were written and being developed while he and Ronson were still in the band...).It contains Hunter's strongest most consistent set of songs,it's brilliantly produced,and Ronson is on fire!..check out his guitar tone!...the screaming wah wah on some of the songs still give me goosebumps even now....oh and yes Ralphs left Mott taking his riff for "One Of The Boys" and turned it into "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love"...According to Hunter s official biography...(they tried singing the line CGEOYL but Hunter didn't like the way it sounded....)
