Thank you for posting this. I need to do this for some of my Uncle's tapes. He has some of my Cousin when he was little. I'm going to get a clear click and convert them, then give my uncle a usb of the videos and send a memory card to my cousin.
@carlhamill5203

Excellent, I use clear click and it's really good to use...make sure the USB you use for the clear click is of good quality and has a high transfer rate. This will prevent audio sync issues which can sometimes happen when using a lower rate USB.

It's possible to have mould spots on the surface of the tape with little or no evidence of the mould visible through the windows. The most common symptom of a mouldy tape is the heads will get dirty, clean themselves and then get dirty again very quickly causing dropouts in the picture. What I like to do is take a second VCR that I don't care too much about, and give the tape a few FF/RW cycles (cleaning the heads after each pass) to get the worst of the mould off. In my case the mould usually collects on the audio head and that's pretty easy to clean. Although tapes that look like your example at the beginning I'd consider a lost cause and throw straight in the garbage...

Agreed,the VCR I am using is non functional in regards to playing videos so it's used specifically for tape cleaning. The results can be varied and depend on many factors,I've had some horrendous tapes,cleaned them and they have come out perfect (well as perfect as can be for VHS tapes).

@@carlhamill5203 But if you take your time to clean this up, do it right. I don't see you using IPA (99%+) when cleaning the tape. That won't only kill 100% the mold on the tape but it will also clean any stuck debris that wouldn't go away otherwise. Your tapes are your "masters". You can always improve your capturing in the future and make a better copy and you will want your master to be in the best possible condition.

To be honest not to sure, when I'm doing it I'm in a sunny room and I can't see any excess dust flying around. If you wanted to be cautious I suppose you could do it in a garage with a mask on. I sometimes take my cleaning VCR outside and use a leaf blower to blow all the mold out of it.

I've seen people say that isopropyl alcohol can actually disintergrate the polyster backing of the tape which ofc makes it irreversibly unplayable, but I don't know if I see much truth in that, and I assume that you've never experienced any side effects like that. Have you heard anything against using IPA? It's really difficult to get tapes as clean just by running them dry in my experience

Tapes like this is, you usually will not want anywhere near your the player. But, if it is a very important recording, this might be a way to do it. Preferably on a bus player you do not care about. If doing like in the video, I would have opened the cassette first and cleaned the case first

So many of these videos use the cleaning cloth on only one side of the tape, when a dual set of damp cloths (one for each side) would work so much better. Unless I missed something.

@@carlhamill5203 I'm worried about the fact that you used cotton swabs on the videotape to clean out the mold, considering how delicate the video heads are in the VCR. Personally I would use synthetic chamois swabs or even printer paper if you are in a pinch since it doesn't shed as much. The cotton may shed onto the tape itself and transfer to your good VCR and potentially clog up the heads.
