I'd never heard of this guy until today. I just heard the song on the first episode of Wentworth, thought it was amazing and someone found it for me online. Archie Roach has a new fan in the UK.

When you live this every day for over five years and find out later that not one person believed that all of a sudden Id become really clumsy because boy did I become really ‘clumsy’ but if there was an injury that couldn’t be explained, it’ simply went untreated and believe it or not, 35 years later and after he pleaded guilty to 28 counts of intentionally causing serious injury, he got a two year suspended sentence and me? I’ll , pay for it every day. thank you Archie this song never ceases to bring me to my knees. xxxxx

He did beat Ruby but this is such a powerful song. As a beaten woman who got rid of the man who beat up on me, I listen to this and it makes me cry but makes me strong. Cos you get sick and tired of walking into doors.

Archie Roach is the eptitomy of soul music, He sings not only about the trials and tribulations of Australian indigenous people but also speaks openly about the culture that european infuluence has had on them and the way that influence has affected not only the nuculus of the family but the culture and the way people see them as a whole. Australian aboriginals are a beautiful people, but have been labled as demigrated by OUR own influence. I love this guys music. Thanks for reading this. Hammer

I'm going to add to this song a movie I watched when another member of my family recommended me to watch "Once were Warriors", domestic violences it a decision that everyone can stop and seek for help. , I seen it as a child and it effects children in many ways and it leaves you numb. Time to bring the darkness into the open and seeking help, healing and support to reverse your anger, frustration, get help.

This song always makes me cry, so poignant and beautifully expressed as a man to other men. He is brilliant. Archie sings part of the lyrics as a man who beat his woman but that is just to illustrate his story, and in other parts of the song he's playing the role of someone saying don't do that. I've met and talked with him & Ruby (lovely lovely Ruby) & he is a beautiful warm guy with a spirit that literally shines from him. It's possible when he was younger & still dealing with issues that he might have lashed out and hit Ruby at some point but I've never heard of anything like that so I dont think it's right to assume he did. Bowie sang about floating around outside a spaceship once - doesnt mean he actually did it tho. People are too literal in their interpretations sometimes.

Its nice to hear these comments, It is amazing the attacks I have had on me as an Aboriginal man for making My first comment which simply was just a comment on how close I feel to the music. If a Irish man said only an Irishmen can understand "Irish eyes are smiling"would he be attacked the same?Arch has lived a similar life 2 me so the words touch me I can relate as a ABRGNL.I feel beaten down 4 commenting, as an Aborigine I cant even comment now, what else do people want to take from us

In a perfect world no one would fight, some women would not be b......s, but what never ceased to amaze me is the strength of most men compared to woman. No matter how bad or mean a woman is, it is just not an even contest! Men can really do some damage if they lay a hand on a woman. No one should hit anyone, I have no problems personally but I can easily see, that for some woman it can be very scary sometimes! Listen to Archie's words and all try and love and respect each other.

@pakanaman I understand what you're saying. I'm always amazed by how many non-aboriginal people take exception to aboriginal people taking ownership of their culture etc - as though we haven't done enough over the years to remove it - even now, aboriginal kids in the NT are denied the right to speak their language in the first 4? hours of their school day - even though experts believe, that it's best for them to learn to read in their native tongue first - then in English? Still happening??

With this song and "Once were Warriors" , that brought domestic violence onto the big screen that this can happen in any home no matter of your status in society, it's real and it's never going to go away unless both sides seek help and work towards solving every issue in there lives.

I'm pretty sure his voice is ruined and overstressed from all the years... he and his family are friends of ours through my parents and they are very special people, not just on public image. If you ever get to meet him you will understand what i mean, Its like he just chases any clouds away from with you and brings the sunlight with him. I didnt know he was any celebrity when I met him so no I wasnt influenced by it. I havent seen him in ages and hope my children get to meet him too.

"White man instruments" our culture is allowed to evolve just as all others do" I didn't say that Aboriginal culture shouldn't be allowed to evolve - and my point about "white instruments" and "English lyrics" is that it HAS evolved and therefore Archie's stories are relevant and accessable to a wider audience . If he was using traditional instruments and singing in Aboriginal dialect then perhaps you would have apoint about needing to be Aboriginal to understand his music.

@pakanaman When I say my ancestors were Irish, nobody asks me if I'm a 'half' or a 'quarter' or any other loathsome inquiry as to my authenticity. It's disgusting that people still do this. Aboriginal people come in all shapes, sizes, colours? like the rest of us. As long as people say they are and are recognised by their peers etc as such, why the questions? It's offensive! There are fair skinned aboriginals with green eyes, who were removed from their families - they're still aboriginal!

@pakanaman As a non-aboriginal person, I feel ashamed by the past and present racist/ingrained attitudes of so many, including governments - past and present! Both Archie and Ruby were removed from their families. Archie found out that his mother lived not far from him, but sadly, she'd died some years before. What a terrible indictment on the rest of us. I don't know why so many non-aboriginal people are so defensive? Ignorance perhaps? Denial? I try to learn all I can about the past!

"Victim=dont ever tell me how to feel. afta what our people ben through" You can feel what you like - I'm asking you to stop playing the victim because nobody here has attacked you and I'm as entitled to my opinion as you are. Archie Roach's music might mean something more personal to you if you are Aboriginal but to suggest that non-aboriginals can't understand or be inspired by him is not for you to say.

It's a false analogy. You are comparing a song with a singer. If you said only Irishmen can understand Van Morrison then your comments would most probably be attacked.
@lithgowstorm
@lithgowstorm 15 жыл бұрын
I wasn't making any comparison of loss between races...and many of Archie's songs have universal themes that could apply to any culture. This song deals with domestic violence - try telling a white woman that gets bashed by her husband that she can't relate to this song.
@noteatpig2getha
@noteatpig2getha 15 жыл бұрын
I fail to see where you have been attacked. "If a Irish man said only an Irishmen can understand "Irish eyes are smiling"would he be attacked the same?" ...Maybe if Archie wasn't singing in English and using "white man's" instruments you might have a valid point. You have no idea of anybody here's origin, life experience or capacity for empathy so your original comment could be described as ignorant. Nobody is stopping you from commenting, it's a level playing field - don't play the victim.
@noteatpig2getha
@noteatpig2getha 15 жыл бұрын
You've labelled me as an attacker and you've labelled me as a racist...and I still fail to see why. I don't really care about the judgement icons - they have nothing to do with our discussion. I'm sorry that it's such a bitter pill for you to swallow but many non-Aboriginals can both relate to and be inspired by Archie's music and words.
