It is believed to be the place where Saint Gregory the Illuminator, the patron saint of Armenia, was imprisoned in a pit for 13 years by King Tiridates III for spreading Christianity in the region. Legend has it that during his captivity, Saint Gregory miraculously survived with the help of a Christian woman who lowered food to him. After Tiridates fell ill and was subsequently cured by Gregory, he converted to Christianity, making Armenia the first nation to adopt Christianity as its state religion in 301 AD.
Today, Khor Virab stands as a symbol of faith and endurance, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the world. The monastery complex itself is a marvel of medieval Armenian architecture, with its stone walls, ancient chapels, and underground chambers evoking centuries of spiritual devotion.
