Bajan rum producers are not permitted, by law, to add anything other than caramel colouring to their spirit, as is the case with rum from Jamaica and Martinique. So you can rest assured the sweetness you are experiencing is a result of the spirits interaction with the casks or any residuals from previous contents. Great review by the way. They don’t put the age on the bottles because they are aged in the Caribbean heat which ages rum more rapidly then in cooler environments. So a rum aged in Barbados for 5 years may taste like a 10 or 15 year old rum. So they go based on taste rather than age.

Barbados, Jamaica, and Martinique all have their own laws forbidding the addition of sweeteners to their rums. Unfortunately, many independent bottlers will add a dose of sugar to rums from these countries. I really enjoyed this bottle of rum. It's an incredible value. If I remember right, it contains rums of 8-15 years old. I am currently drinking a bottle of Mount Gay Black Barrel which is also quite good, albiet less age than the XO. I am also really enjoying Rhum Barbancourt 15 which I discovered before Ralfy reviewed it ;) It is rich and complex as well. Finally, if you can get past the nonsense solera age statement, Dictador 20 is a very nice sipper as well. According to that mighty rum marauder, Fat Rum Pirate, none of these have been ruined with added sugar. Great review as always gentlemen. Cheers!

Jamaica allows to add sugar and call it Jamaican Rum, but doesn't do that.

A great rum for the price. Drinking it tonight. A shop in panmure, akld has it at $65 nz a bottle which is about the cheapest I've found. The Appletons I've tried didn't impress me at all for some reason but this stuff is great , and affordable.

Also Mount Gay Rum does not have any added sugar. The only producers that add sugar are white label brands that bottle off island. If I’m not mistaken anyway. Also Mount Gay is a molasses based rum.

Top review. Watching and sipping XO. With a cigar this is hands down a better experience than the Appleton 12. There is a character in the Mount Gays that just gets me coming back.

i often found that when distilling my mash the results are nicer and perhaps sweeter when i do not let it reach its full gravity point so for example if i started off with a 14% alc/v i only let it go up to 12% during fermentation before i distill it leaving enough residual sugar helps it carry a nice flavor ,besides it does tend to slow down drastically before reaching attenuation and someone even told me they add sugar to there mash before distilling,said it comes out smoother,my tricks of the trade is leaving residual sweetness,waiting for the mash to clarify as much as possible ,slow double distilling ,wood ageing at high percentage ,cutting it down and then i even carbon filter it for several days or weeks before wood ageing once more

a good quality rum i think should never have added sugar ,whatever carries must come naturally from the process and barrels,really hope mount gay is like this and it should be being the best rum i hear comes from Barbados,,i have not yet tried it but from my limited experience i found ron barcelo to be a good sipper,,am currently sipping on st lucia chairmans reserve

Beenleigh artisan rum distillers since 1884 in Queensland Australia produce a nice double cask 5 years aged rum! Would be good if you could do a review. Cheers

Their Eclipse is also bottled at 43%, and is a very similar although less intricate. It's my go to for mixing drinks when recipes call for golden rum. It's also not bad neat, especially considering the price. Unfortunately it's chill filtered :(

Eclipse may be bottled at 43% in the USA, but here in Australasia it's watered all the way down to 37.5% Making it one to avoid for me sadly.
