Mount Mitchell Winter Ultramarathon: 32 Miles Through the Black Mountains

The Black Mountains of North Carolina feature the highest peak east of the Mississippi and are home to some of the most hostile weather conditions in our entire state.
In January a small group of us set out on an insane self-supported 50k (32-mile) training run through these mountains that included over 22,000 feet of elevation change. The forecast called for gusty winds and cloudy, but otherwise dry conditions - that quickly changed as snow began falling early into our run and would proceed throughout most of the day.
