Mount Taranaki Summit Climb - New Zealand

Mount Taranaki (Maori: Taranaki Maunga; also known as Mount Egmont) is a stratovolcano on the west side of New Zealand’s north island. At 2,518 metres (8,261 ft), it towers above the rolling farm lands encircling its outer reaches far below. It last erupted in 1854 and is presently considered to be dormant. While the summit trail starts out with countless stairs, you are soon navigating a loose pumice plain and onto a steep igneous rock face as you climb ever higher towards the summit. The peak is sacred to the Maori, who believe that everything in the universe is equal to humans. Experiencing Taranaki’s upper reaches can change your perspective of our world and our place within it.

I climbed mt Taranaki almost 10 years ago as part of a 4 week visit to NZ. First kind of real climb I ever did. This brings back a lot of memories! Did you start at the Egmont visitor center?

Amazing video, thanks for sharing. How long did the trek take ? Was it done in a single day or across multiple days ? We visited the North Egmont Visitor centre in Jan 2024, tried to walk towards the mountain. We couldn't even clear the forest trees and had to turn back due to time and our condition but am curious to know.

From the car park I took Overall 7-8 hours (up and down) and the summit was very snowy and icey but we did it without special equipment in beginning of december.
