Mountain Dew Mouth and the Worst Teeth in America

With little to no job prospects the people living in Appalachia often do not have adequate health insurance. The high levels of consumption of sugary drinks, like Mountain Dew, has led to what is commonly referred to as Mountain Dew mouth. This is when peoples teeth are rotting or missing entirely because of sugary drinks and lack of access to proper dental care.
Nearly two thirds of the people living in West Virginia and Tennessee are missing teeth. For these people overcrowded free dental clinics are the only way for them to receive the dental care they so desperately need. It is not uncommon for people at these clinics to get a full mouth extraction, or the removal of all 32 teeth. Vocativ went to one of these free clinics to talk to the patients and the dentists about this dental epidemic.

I live in East TN and this is spot on. I told a girl here I usually get my teeth cleaned once a year. She told me she hadn't been to the dentist in 25 years! Told me she couldn't afford to get her teeth cleaned but spends $100 a month on weed.

Lol $100 she is lying to you. The people I know use way more than $100 a night that's the problem with having the cleanest professionals. They have no idea what the truth is because they haven't seen that side of life. You want to know the truth you have to be a drug dealer then you would know how much product people actually use.

which doesn't really matter because people should be using product like that in a responsible manner if they decided to do so anyway. But with the amount of drug use in homes and then the lack of conversation on the topics in school no wonder North America has a problem with these things. Lots of money to spend drugs on.

I think it’s a combination of brushing your teeth regularly, but also reducing sugary treats to occasional treats. Also, my dentist told me that processed food has been shown to be very bad for teeth too. Without proper nutrition, our teeth don’t stay very strong, and the enamel becomes soft. So, it’s important to eat nutritious food, low in sugar, and brush/floss your teeth 2-3 times a day as well as get dental cleanings every 6 months to a year.

Most people won't shell out the money for a Britta filter. fracking water can't be purified by it anyway, I would need a more complicated process before it's consumable for humans. The only thing these people are able to afford to drink is cheap sodas and juice because they cost less then water in their region. Great for you that you don't drink bottle water but to them bottle water is a luxury

I live in a big city in Northern California. Once a year the local fair grounds would put on a free dental clinic. People would come out & camp out for 2 days waiting for an appointment. It's so sad. I'm blessed to have dental insurance and I use it, but growing up we depended on the community free clinics for help. I'll never forget.

I go to the dentist twice a year with no insurance. $200 per visit, so $400 a year. I had a cavity once and paid that out of pocket to $200. I even had to get two wisdom teeth removed and paid cash for that (about $800). I don’t know much dental insurance is but I do fine without it. For now. I take care of my teeth. My point is it’s not terribly hard to afford the dentist. But it is dirt cheap to brush your teeth and floss etc as you should. Their soda intake is huge but I’m sure many there smoke and chew as well. But with that being said we all need help and I’m glad they get it. Hopefully it serves as a lesson that people need to take care of their body though

The simple answer is addiction. The brain becomes dependent. I've tried to quit soda many times and have always failed. Nothing works like as a pick-me-up like a can of Coke does. It sounds ridiculous but the brain can technically get addicted to anything that makes the reward signals go off and there's definitely things in soda that do that to people. At the end of the day, I'm just glad to not be addicted to something much worse.
@JTDyer21
@JTDyer21 4 жыл бұрын
@@scorpio1699, yeah but I'm talking about brushing your teeth right after a soda or sweet snack. I've tried to warn most people I know. It's not enough to just brush your teeth, you must do it right after a sugar snack or at least chew trident gum. I guess people like rotten teeth. I'm like, ok have it your way if you want a mouth full of rotten teeth go ahead. So I pretty much stopped giving the warnings cause no one will listen. Apparently they think they're Superman. A lot like smoking. You can tell people all day long it causes cancer and they still do it. So all you can do is sit back and watch people kill themselves. Oh well.

I had cancer and did major chemotherapy twenty years ago. My teeth got bad after that - which is a common side effect. I’ve had dental insurance and go in often, but it’s been a real struggle with paying for dental care even with insurance. I went to a cheap dental place and they drilled out nearly every tooth because insurance pays per tooth - so my cost was small then, but I’m paying for it now because I have so many fillings that were totally unnecessary at the time. I’ve found it’s actually cheap to go no insurance because the doctors will work with you in a payment plan, and those cash payments are often the same as you would pay your deductible. The doctors give you a discount so they don’t have to deal with the insurance. Also they are much less likely to drill needlessly if your on a budget. I’ve got several teeth that are only a few years from a root canal, but I’ll just pull when that time comes and implant some other day.

True, I can drink up to 5 cans of soda a day but have never lost an adult tooth. I use a straw and brush the sugary film off my teeth shortly after. Still not great for my organs but my teeth are fine. I'm guessing the education about hygiene in this area not great. Lack on insurance is the least of their issues. A toothbrush and toothpaste from the local Dollar Tree would do them more good in the long run.

No it's not. It can be the effects of childhood neglect. If your parents neglected you, your dental health starts off at a disadvantage compared to others and your enamel has been weakened. Then you can lose teeth at an earlier age and that leads to more dental problems. Also, a lot of these people may not drive and cannot even get to a free clinic so it's lack of access to care.

Without money you can't leave or find a new house or buy a car. I mean for people under those circumstances it’s understandable. However, there are just people who are plain stubborn and know what they do is wrong. I don’t see much sympathy on those type of people. Plus, I think it’s common knowledge that Mountain Dew is filled with tons of sugar like any soft drink would. What does sugar do to the teeth when not properly taken care of? Of course, it leads to cavities which in turn lead to tooth decay.

I’m currently looking for dental help here in Texas & I have been pushing my local Representatives to include Dental as a part of Tradition Healthcare. Many of us in the US have teeth issues & shouldn’t have to pay separately. Especially if you grown up in an Industrial area. Like Dow Chemical & other Chemical Plants that surrounds us. I’m sure that hasn’t helped many with our air polluted & water that we drink. I’ve seen young kids in my area with just bad teeth. The dental problem is everywhere. I live in California. Many people have not have dental insurance. Most employers do not cover dental work, just medical, and it is limited. I am one of the fortunate ones. I have dental insurance. I can get routine cleanings without cost, everything else is covered 50%. The insurance company has to approve those services. A group like this one had a free clinic at the State fairgrounds in Sacramento. It was scheduled for two days, and I could not count the number of patients, but looked like the was a mile on the first day. You could not see the end.

The Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox (OCA) Churches celebrate the feast day of St. Apollonia on 9 February, and she is popularly invoked against toothache because of the torments she had to endure. She is represented in art with pincers, in which a tooth is held. Saint Apollonia is one of the two patron saints of Catania. William S. Walsh noted that, though the major part of her relics were preserved in the former church of St. Apollonia at Rome, her head at the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, her arms at the Basilica di San Lorenzo fuori le Mura, parts of her jaw in St. Basil's, and other relics are in the Jesuit church at Antwerp, in St. Augustine's at Brussels, in the Jesuit church at Mechlin, in St. Cross at Liège, in the treasury of the cathedral of Porto, and in several churches at Cologne. These relics consist in some cases of a solitary tooth or a splinter of bone. In the Middle Ages, objects claimed to be her teeth were sold as toothache cures. There was a church dedicated to her in Rome, near the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, but it no longer exists. Only its little square, the Piazza Sant'Apollonia remains. One of the principal train stations of Lisbon is also named for this saint. There is a statue of Saint Apollonia in the church at Locronan, France. The island of Mauritius was originally named Santa Apolónia in her honor in 1507 by Portuguese navigators. A parish church in Eilendorf, a suburb of Aachen, Germany, is named in honor of Saint Apollonia. In some areas of Italy, Saint Apollonia is cast in the role of the tooth fairy, collecting children's fallen baby teeth while they sleep and leaving a gift in exchange. The Madonna Della Strada Chapel at Loyola University Chicago contains a stained glass window on the north wall depicting St. Apollonia. The windows along this wall correspond with the colleges of the university at the time the chapel was built. The Loyola University School of Dentistry closed in 1993, but the window in the chapel remains.

Yeah, well our nation spends more on our military than then next 14 countries combine and starts wars of aggression over natural resources but frames it as preemptive tactical strategy. Obviously we can't worry about what our own citizens need when corporations need to make money. The needs of the corporations outweigh the needs of the many.

I grew up in rural Eastern TN. Never had these issues the entire time I lived there, and I rarely if ever drank soda. It was anticonvulsants after a car accident here in Connecticut that did my teeth in. There are numerous reasons you can have issues, and let me tell you, anticonvulsants will screw up your jaws and teeth like nothing doing.

what bothers me is they're consistently blaming the sugar in the drinks and while sugar definitely promotes bacterial growth, its the plaque and tartar that's doing the dirty work. Simply put- if you don't take care of your teeth you will get cavities, regardless of diet.

My parent do not have any formal education and brushing teeth and maintaining oral health in general are included as an outcomes. We're living in a province and life is hard back when we were young, we're just using a guava leaves to clean our teeth. Eating fastfood is really a treat because we're far from town and drinking Cola or any sugary drinks is a dream come true for me back then😁. Now, at 29 I have 4 extracted teeth all of them are the second molar which fortunately not visible even when I smile fully and the rest of my teeth are still intact. Those extracted teeth are maybe due to rice as Im asian. I got braces installed as well when Im 28 and still it on now. Since we're in a province our diet are mostly vegetable and fruit, this could be a reasons why my teeth hasnt deteriorated that much. That s why diet is much more important then followed by brushing.

A single dentist visit to clean your teeth is only like 400 bucks in my area. Anyone can afford that at least once a year. Most people spend 50+ dollars on just their cellphones every month so i think the problem isn't really the financial burden but rather just misplaced priorities; and also maybe a bit of a lack of education.

Firstly, Alberta has the best regulations in production of oil and it is sad that American Oil Lobbyists are funding protests against the pipeline when simultaneously these companies are destroying their own environments and the drinking water. Secondly, I hate going to Wendy’s because of their ridiculous drink sizes - which people have told me are similar to the sizes you find at most fast food or convenience stores in the United States. There are so many systemic issues that are often blamed on the people despite there being so many socioeconomic, nutritional deserts, poor FDA/food regulations or standards, limited/no health care, limited education, drug usage problems that really play a huge role in why people resort to drinking pop over water. The Mountain Dew in the United States barely meets the standards in Canada for consumption - hence why we don’t have caffeine or very little caffeine in it. Honestly, I think Mountain Dew’s parent company should be held accountable to these issues and be forced to take it off the market. I really feel for these people. I know how hard living in a lower economic bracket feels like and I feel gratitude that I have some dental coverage (through my job) and public healthcare, as well as decent drinking water. America needs to work at treating their people better. Same goes for here - look at the Northern Ontario Reserves with no clean drinking water for over a decade despite public outcries - same issue, there needs be government intervention. And, right now, the rise in theft, fraud, home invasions and drug usage in Alberta is fucking insane. So, again, I feel them on this. However, I wanna note that there is still some responsibility on the individual to attempt to clean their teeth and refrain from drug use. Or prioritize their health above other recreational things. I am poor as heck but I try very hard to have good hygiene, skincare and good quality food that accessible to me. I also don’t drink pop unless it is a rare occasion.

I'm not quite clear about this. Don't any of them own a toothbrush and some toothpaste, and brush their teeth, nice and slowly over each tooth towards the gum for two minutes at least twice a day? Is that so difficult? Seems like this should be more about providing information about dental hygiene.
