You had my heart pounding with excitement as that turkey came up the ridge. Seeing your gun on the ground in front of you made me think of the time my nephew let two toms walk within 5 yards of us while he was messing with his camera. It didn't work out well either. lol

Boy ol boy 😮 that dude was ready to die that day! I felt like I was watching a car wreck as that all unfolded, but couldn’t take my eyes off it. Just one of those that happens fast and u live and learn from, it happens, especially with cameras involved.

I wouldn’t have called it bushwhacking. If you did kill it. That turkey probably heard you rustling around getting your camera set up and flew down early cause he thought you were his hens. I bet he walks the spine of that ridge trying to gobble up hens often. He knew exactly where the sound was coming from he walk right to ya. You don’t have to yelp’em up all the time. Sometimes just scratching in the leaves works. Enjoying the videos! Keep up the good work!

I've hunted a large national forest aeea for turkey 2 seasons. I killed a very large turkey 1st season beginning of season and last season hunted it for 5 days late season and did not hear a turkey. What is your advice on timing? What is a good strategy to find one in the morning? More calling ? Less calling?
@claycomboutdooors5 күн бұрын
Late season can be tough. But so can early season. I've seen it both ways. But on average, you're probably gonna hear more roost gobbling early in the season. A lot of times, though, they're with hens in the early part of the season & it gets awfully quiet after flydown. Man, that's a tough question! A lot of times, if you find one late in the season, he's ready. But as you found out, it can be very hard to find one. Honestly, I would probably pick late season after the pressure dies off. I hate the warmer temps & thick foliage. But I feel like my odds are better IF I find one. It just might take a lot of work to find him. Calling strategy? Can you be more specific?
@Random_Quads5 күн бұрын
@claycomboutdooors I'm not a very skilled caller. I have a mouth call and box call. I was primarily trying to use a crow call. I probably covered 25 plus miles during that hunt. I would also do some hen calls with the mouth call. What is a good sit to moving ratio if your not hearing anything? I feel like I moved to fast and when I sat I waited to long. I kind of felt like I was deer hunting honestly last season. Waiting for one to walk by. Also do you think they are up high or low in the morning? The ridges are around 4000k.
@claycomboutdooors5 күн бұрын
@Random_Quads Early morning, I tend to do a lot more listening than calling late in the season. But after flydown, assuming you haven't scouted, you're gonna have to cover some ground & do some calling to locate one (if they're not taking). Depending on how i feel, I may run ridges & cover tons of ground, or i might take it slow. But i try to get in areas with nesting habitat where there may be hens still laying & just slip thru the woods, sounding like a content hen feeding. In those cases, i would maybe do a calling sequence for several minutes, then back up maybe 40 yards & sit for about a half hour or so. I know that sounds kind of vague, but sometimes I'm just flat wore out by then. But I know exactly what you mean when you say you feel like you're deer hunting. That's not much fun to me. I'm not the most patient turkey hunter. I do try to slow down some come late season. But I'm not gonna just sit for hours waiting & hoping a turkey shows up. The way I look at it, the more ground I cover, the better chance I have finding a gobbler in the right mood. Early in the morning, i would start out high. But honestly, you can find them anywhere that time of season. If it's getting hot, there's a good chance they'll be on the north faces or down low in those creek bottoms at some point

@claycomboutdooors I've been caught in a tight spot more than I'd like to mention.
@derekpotts25496 күн бұрын
Can’t stand guys who show up to a spot after you’ve already “claimed it.” Sure it’s public and everyone has the same hunting rights but be respectful and find another spot if another hunter has beat you to it.
@claycomboutdooors5 күн бұрын
I don't expect to have 10's of thousands of acres to myself. I don't want to come off that way. But I DO expect someone to show a little RESPECT & at least ask where I plan on going if I'm already parked at a spot when they get there! It's just common courtesy. Anyways, thanks for watching Derek!
