who were his main influences? Believe that with Felix's association with Cream, maybe Clapton, but his runs are more melodic than about all of Claptons', which sometimes look more like an athletic event, as in, "just how fast can I play?", vs. sweet melodic runs, like Theme, Silver Paper and Travelin' in the Dark. Now, I have great reverence for EC as a guitar player, a little less so for his songwriting, but not quite God, surely was about as close as any got not named Allman or Hendrix. Back to my point, anyone know about who Leslie named as his greatest influences? Have found some great guitarists through the years when getting answers to this question

Why weren't these actual recordings released on the Woodstock release? I idolized Felix Pappalardi! whilst attending Pacoima Junior High School in Pacoima, California. By the way, Ritchie Valens attended this same school in the late 1950s. Felix played the coolest Bass ~ the Gibson EB1 Violin Shaped Bass with that ever so cool fuzz tone! What I loved about Felix was his passionate Lead Vocal and his solid Bass work! He wasn't a busy Bass player ala Jack Bruce. Pappalardi was always holding the Rhythm section down! He wore the coolest, colourful Psychedelic clothes. R.I.P. FELIX A. PAPPALARDI JR.

I was 15 y.o. during Woodstock and on tour with a 40 voice folk choir. We were all excited because we were booked to play in Woodstock on the same dates as the festival. When our tour bus rolled into town…it was a ghiast town. Then they told us the festival was moved to Bethel/White Lake. 🤣😂 But, technically, I got to sing at Woodstock during the festival….just the wrong one. Hahaha. First time I saw them was in 1974 in Landover, MD. J.Giels was the warm-up band and did a great job but were all but forgotten once Mountain started playing. About midway through, the band stopped playing and the whole hall went black, no lights at all. Then suddenly the darkness was broken by two drumsticks that had been set on fire and Corky Laing played one of the best drum solos I've ever heard. All you could see were these two flaming sticks flying back and forth over the drums. The lights came back on just in time to see him plunge the sticks into a pan of water and this huge cloud of smoke rose up over the the stage. Amazing show! IMO Keith Moon had nothing on Corky Laing!

I was at the first real rock show there when the Allmans played in 73. The Cap Center was always a blast to see shows & we who live in MD saw many during those fun filled years of youth.

Leslie west never liked Steve’s addition to the lineup. He was only added to the band so mountain would not make themselves not look like a Cream ripoff, and Steve didn’t exactly have the best relations with the band either, mainly just Pappalardi. He eventually left the band not long after 1971 because of Leslie’s request to kick him out. Frankly, I’ve always wondered why Leslie was against him. Steve Knight really adds to the performances. Edit: apparently, he was also the only one out of the four who could never do solos. Leslie could do a solo, Felix could, corky could, but Steve just couldn’t. This also possibly contributed to him being the least liked member of the band.

Never heard this until now. Interesting. Definitely sounds like Woodstock, with Knight high in the mix and the Smart drum style. It has some misfires from Leslie, both on guitar and vocals, that probably prevented it from being included on the vinyl release (Wdstock TWO). Almost sounds like the guitar is doubled up on the main riff (??). The guitar breaks are worth the price of admission - especially that outro.

A few years ago I had a long talk with the guy who did sound for Woodstock (Bill Hanley) and he explained how bad the limitations on the entire system were based on the fact that everything was being recorded and had to be mixed down to 4 tracks on the fly during the show. That means the drums get one track, vocals get a track, etc. If they had multi-part harmonies (like CSNY) that had be mixed to a single track and fed over to the recording trailer. IOW, lots of Rube Goldberg with stacks of those old Sure 4 (6?) channel mixers making sub groups into the monitors, FOH board, and then to the recording guys. In those days none of the equipment had the 3 prong ground on the power cable either so I'm amazed they didn't have more problems with hum in the audio due to things trying to ground through mic cables, etc. BTW, if you want to hear another live show try searching Mountain @ New Canaan high school 1969. It's actually decent quality audio for something almost 50 years old.

Rupe53: ~ Thanks for the comment. ~ By-the-way, on the night before the day that I am writing this reply, I had watched a documentary on PBS named "Woodstock: 50 Years Later", and they _SHOWED_ some of those little 4-channel Shure mixers that were used at Woodstock. I remember noting how terribly basic that set-up was, and thinking to myself,"You've GOT to be joking !"☺

Great insight. Amazing how they pulled it off with such primitive systems at that time. They had moved past taping the recording mics to the stage mics by this point. I'm sure much was learned and Woodstock was the motivating factor in improving future big audio productions.
@rupe533 жыл бұрын
@@Tickbryan ... if you think about it, Woodstock was the largest outdoor event of it's kind up to that point and everyone (sound techs especially) who watched the movie probably said to themselves, I can do better than that. In the years following there were also several articles in trade mags showing what they were up against. These days its' all broken down into segments of stage monitors, FOH, and sound reinforcement. (the actual PA system) Then there's the offshoots for audio recording and rebroadcast. Each sector has it's own group of people as well. It really takes a small village to run the sound at a festival... and they did it with just a hand full back then.

Norman Smart could not taken the volume of Mountain. Felix knew him as a very capable studio drummer with an excellent sense of time and recruited him to play on Leslie's first album entitled "Mountain" where he did a fine job. He had previously played with "The Remains" an opening act for The Beatles. ND's intention was never to stay with Mountain and had arranged with Felix to join a much more mainstream west coast band that played at a more tolerable volume and featured CSN&Y type vocal harmonies. He was much more disciplined a player than Corky Laing, whose tempos from show to show varied greatly. If you listen to various recordings of Mississippi Queen and Never In My Life, for example, you'll see what I mean. The studio version of Mississippi Queen moves briskly where as on Flowers of Evil, it clearly drags. Laing brought power and energy to the band, which of course, was what the band was all about. He was also a good lyricist and helped with many of Mountain's compositions.

this is not from Woodstock, unless there was an alternative set by them, which I doubt. WOODSTOCK II has had these tunes for over 50 years. on CD, vinyl, and cassette. this is still good, tho. a little up tempo compared to the real WOODSTOCK recording.

it's also available w/ footage, on the WOODSTOCK DVD, called 'extras' w/ CCR, TheWHO, and many more.

This is definitely from Woodstock. The Woodstock 2 Blood of The Sun was from the Fillmore East in 1970. You can hear how both of these tunes weren’t fully developed and this was their 3rd gig ever.

If that is the case, and this is not Woodstock, what is what I call, " the daylight version"? I have learnrd the daylight version of Theme FROM an imaginary western years ago. I have just reciently seen and heard the versions of the performance under this cover. I have heard 4 different renditions under this night cover to include one where the first verse begins again where the second verse belongs and the vocals completely phase out after about 6 counts. So what is the real version?

I have always wondered whether some of the "music" from Woodstock, that was recorded badly or not at all due to crappy equipment at the time, was re recorded, remixed, or substuted when Geldoff had to sell what he had to Warner Brothers to get the guys with the dark suits of his butt. THE NIGHT COVER VERSIONS I have heard have all been significantly different from each other and "muddy". They were all theme FOR an imaginary western. The DAYLIGHT version, is much cleaner and crisper than the recordings form confirmed Woodstock recordings. Also, the Daylight is the only video of theme FROM an imaginary western.of which the original was named on the Mountain, Climbing album that wasnt released until 1970.I call this whole issue the Mountain Inigma.

love MOUNTAIN, but am not an expert on them( in '99 ,I saw them at a Woodstock re-union on (formerly )Yasgur's farm).. but look at their studio albums on YT, and I'm sure you'll get the one that was written for whatever album it's on. a friend of mine saw them, and is a guitar head, as am I, but he's really good. he was at the edge of the stage(after getting to bullshit w/ Les) and West actually , in mid-song, said "strum the chords for me".my baffled friend did so for a few seconds, and he doesn't tell bull stories. but someone on this site says the Woodstock II stuff is actually from Fillmore East. so if you were confused before, I am now. but shit happens. for years, I didn't know 'Hendrix in the West' (recently re-issued) had some 'Isle of Wight 'audio, while it claimed to be recorded in the Western USA.

I think it is ... thats not Corky Laing playing drums. The drummer here didn't play the icon drum openng on Theme, which Corky did everytime. It seems alot looser than other versions. They had only played a few gigs prior to Woodstock so the band wasn't particularly tight at Woodstock. just my $.02 having seen Mountain at the Fillmore three times back in the day.

@@daddysannie I had the original vinyl and the Woodstock version of "Blood" was played slower and Leslie played the most awesome pinch harmonics I ever heard. No pinch harmonics on this version. Somebody edited the original MC introducing Mountain version with some other event. Fact. This is NOT the Woodstock version.

The drumming is so awful I'm sure the drummer is not Corky Lang He was more dynamic!
