I got the chance to go visit and record Roland Rice, Jim Gierhart and Kenneth Brown. All houndsmen and cowboys from South West New Mexico in the Gila... Ben Lilly's stomping ground. I really enjoyed listening to their stories. Hounds, Mules and Lion Hunting. They talked about Ben Lilly the Lee Brothers and many more.

Yes me too I started out at about 10 yrs old hunting with guys like that, I'm so thankful they were willing to take a kid like me and of course they got be addicted to it lol and the only thing that has stayed with me throughout life was my dogs and hunting. I don't understand how guys could actually quit hunting I would be dead in no time if I quit.

This session was sure good for my soul. . . . these three ol boys are birds of my feather. The old gentleman on the left reminded my so much of my Grand dad.... Just pure salt of the earth men of the old breed. I was struck by the part of the conversation where they were discussing the sad state of the deer population. I was so amazed that they all said the same things I've been saying for many years about the decimation of our mule deer herds and the reasons for it. I live now where I grew up and back in the 50's and 60's there were thousands and thousands of mule deer in these mountains. You could go for a drive in mountains and see 500 - 750 mule deer in an afternoon and now you drive that same country and you are lucky to see 3 or 4 mule deer. Three years ago the Fish and Game changed the deer season from bucks only to "any" deer. Still selling the same amount of tags . . . . like they said, revenue is the priority. Tragic ..... our Fish and Game have managed the deer into extinction

I really enjoy these interviews and storytelling sessions. Men like these and yourself are treasures, them and their stories need to be preserved. Thank you for doing it. In a couple of days my Dad would have been 114, I would give anything to have recorded the stories him and his siblings told. They grew and lived in harder and wilder times, (I would say better times). Thank you again.

Man hearing you guys reminds me of my gramps and his buddies that took me hunting as a boy. We was coon hunters. Well i had dreams of lions and married a gal from here. Im just north of you a ways. No cats yet but my dogs are on their way. Im more old school. I have no horse or quad. Just me my dogs and my own 2 feet. Im self taught and has taken a while but if luck will have it we will have our first lion before the winter is out. You guys was a joy to listen to and im sure you have alot more stories and knowledge than what you had time to share here. I salute all you men and hope there are more young guys like me to carry the torch. Like yall say my first hunt i was ruined as well. I live for it. New mexico really is a place like no other.

After watching these videos I feel like I was born 100 years to late!!! Most of the old houndsmen around here were old fox and coyote hunters and I am lucky to have known them and hunted with them. I can picture what a video like this would of been if someone would of interviewed them. Thanks again.

Supposedly the last Grizz killed in Colorado was in 1904…Old Mose….Interesting book by that title, still available. There are people that swear there are Grizzly’s still here ? The DOW,says no, none ? Same with wolves….I believe I saw one about 8-10 years ago, SW part of the state. These interviews you do Brett are so compelling, so interesting. 🤔👍🏻. I worked with his brother on roads, he was a Pima County surveyor. Jack Childs did the Jaguar study for the AZ game and Fish in southern AZ. If you can locate him, that would be one heck of an interview. I tried to get dogs from him a couple times but he wouldn't budge.

@@BrettVaughnB100 year’s ago, I had very cold nose dogs. I never to this day have never seen dogs that could trail old tracks with them. I spent a lot of time trailing tracks every where for hours, not catching anything. The dogs I have now can trail a 12-20 hour track on the bare ground and sometimes the conditions don’t let them, but I catch a lot more game with them. I love to watch hounds cold trail but I also love to watch them catch game. Also, I don’t enjoy competing with other hound men , but I love to learn, exchange information or other peoples options. I ask questions and listen, but don’t judge. This state of mind has made me a good horse trainer. Thanks for doing what you do! I love it!!!

The Car insurance Companies were the ones that pushed the Doe season in Michigan and Wisconsin. They wiped the White Tail almost out; it has taken 40 years to get some of them back. I don’t think I will live to see the day that you can go out and see two hundred deer in an evening. It is just greed!
